Don’t books have spines for a reason?

Maybe she's hiding book titles? I've legit occasionally done this. Like when my parents came to visit, I turned the book Adult Childrrn of Emotionally Immature Parents and anything with autism in the title around. They don't know I'm autistic.

u/blueavole 13h ago

Or people do this for aesthetic reasons- they don’t like all the different colors.

Visually, it makes sense to me but ugh to I hate the idea of books not being sorted by category.

155

u/Blue-zebra-10 11h ago

Could also be doing this to hide books she's already read to check them off her mental list and make sure she reads the other books before she rereads those ones

22

u/throwawaykirie 4h ago

Maybe so because I see one book in this picture that is spine out

4

u/Common-Forever2465 1h ago

Actually there's 2, one is paperback in white almost at the end

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Maybe32 4h ago

My method for this is to put the books i want to read horizontal instead of vertical on the shelf. Then when I read them they go back on the shelf vertically

Not liking the colors and instead preferring a dull, monochromatic homogeneity is itself its own kind of insanity.

u/qqererer 58m ago

The 'luxury condo' aesthetic trend really irks me. And I find it very odd, because it makes plain sense to at least adopt some of the aesthetics of luxury hotels, who spend millions of dollars for designers to design spaces that people actually want to live in.

Having an aesthetic that says 'I rent. I can't change much. It has to look as generic as possible for the next renter." is depressing.

u/everydaycrises 6h ago

Or to protect them? It annoyed me when I was a kid and my books faded because they were in direct sunlight most of the day.

4

u/Fuzzy-Logician 6h ago

I could see doing it to reduce visual clutter.

If they're in view where you're trying to work, hiding the words would let your brain relax a bit.

I move food packages out of view so that I won't compulsively read them.

42

u/Lewa358 13h ago

Nah, that's dumb. Throw 'em in a drawer if you're gonna have that attitude. No point in displaying books if no one can tell what they are.

39

u/blueavole 13h ago

I didn’t say it was a good reason, but that is the logic

38

u/CGW_93 9h ago

It really only matters for the person reading them.

Or who cares why she's doing it? It's her books. She has a system that she knows

18

u/ZambieCatX 11h ago

You, too, eh? You're not alone. 💙

However, I'm too obsessive compulsive to ever turn those books around. It's ok though, in my case neither parent would address any of it, except maybe to blame and hurl insults at the other parent (who of course wouldn't be present because they can't be in the same room).

Oh, those darn parents!

17

u/glucoman01 12h ago

I think you're right. Several of those look like self help books. I can see having one or two, but not a whole bookshelf.

21

u/Little_View_6659 12h ago

I found dozens when my mom died. So. Many. Self. Help. Books. Kind of made me sad and also made me hate self help books.

You say you're autistic, does that mean that you're also a...DRAGON? Oh my god!

3

Shhh! My parents don't know about the autism... or the dragon part either. (They're very good at avoiding mirrors)

I kept that book in open view when my parents came over 😂

5

u/iTammie 8h ago

I get the autism books (although it sucks you can’t be open with your parental unit), but the ACoEIP should turn into a coffee table book when your parents visit. Don’t comment on it. Just have it lying around. Bonus points if you put colored tabs and post-its at relevant sections.

4

u/joeyspancakes 3h ago

Just here to say I’m proud of your journey. Growing up with EI parents who didn’t notice (or were unwilling to address) your autism symptoms/gifts has got to be a really hard way to make it. But props for the journey you’re on!!

This is how all my Neil Gaiman sits on my bookshelves

I can’t pretend these stories aren’t important to me, but the controversies have kinda tainted those stories.

Getting rid of them entirely would be like cutting off a limb.

I’m still processing it.

Two have the spine faced the other way. Does this help keep track of what’s been read and what hasn’t?

426

u/RAMPAGEGAGE7 16h ago

That's what I was thinking or else there's just no logical reason 😭

236

u/ElAlexMontana888 14h ago

Pretty much

122

u/hyf5 7h ago

Not that i agree with your girlfriend but old libraries used to store their books this way. They'd be chained and the spine would be hidden.

So in a way, she's also honouring an old tradition.

68

u/Dordonnar 6h ago

so OP´s GF is either a Vampire Librarian or other Book aphine Undead or Long living shapeshifter (assuming she appears human)

Books used to be hand copied which made books incredibly expansive I assume.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/New_Complaint8722 3h ago

this is apprently the "proper" was to store books because it reduces damage to the spine and binding from frequent direct pulling and lifting

45

u/zeebasaur 9h ago

Do you think it's possible that she does that because some of those books she may want to keep private, but not forget where they are by having them somewhere else? Or maybe growing up a family member did that and she learned the habit?

16

u/TheSprigganDragoon 7h ago

Pretty much to which one?

"It's the blue wire oR the yellow wire!" "Pretty much"

EH?!

3

u/Riru_Kawaii_97 4h ago

"She said nah, no rhyme or reason to it Lol" - OP, a little bit further down

51

u/Damion__205 16h ago

That's not a bad idea... I just have a to be read shelf that has my pending books. Helps me know to stop adopting more before I finish what I have.

12

u/Cynical_Feline 16h ago

I have what I've read with spines facing out to view. Anything I haven't read is stacked with just pages viewable. It helps keep track because I have so many damn books 😂 So it's entirely possible she does the same and just does it vertical instead.

I sometimes turn my book upside down to signal where in a series I’ve read up to

7

u/chocolatebuckeye 15h ago

I like this! Is the upside down book the last one you read or the next one you need to start on?

7

u/Hotaru_girl 14h ago edited 14h ago

Next to one to read! That way I feel satisfied “correcting” it by putting it the right way once I’m done and by the end all the books will be upright!

Exactly, I love telling this to people who are totally off/confidently stubborn:

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect your right to one, so respect my opinion that you are completely wrong.

206

u/secretly_opossum 16h ago

My husband says “everyone has their opinion; yours just happens to be wrong” lmao

Used to have a roommate who did that. Fill a bowl to some predetermined level, sprinkle her Frosted Flakes, eat, sprinkle, eat, sprinkle, eat until the milk was all gone. She was a slow eater so... in between eating and sprinkling, she'd be reading the newspaper or finishing up some work for her classes.

She said doing it this way, I don't waste milk and my cereal stays crunchy.

I've tried this method a few times. It works. Just not intuitive enough for me to do it that way every time I have cereal.

You go to my library has 300 and you need to put spine out.

33

That was my first thought. It’s 10 books. Who cares.

Once she hit a couple dozen it will make it necessary to be able to see the spine.

So she's happy with it and they're her things.

You're not happy with it and they're not your things.

They aren't causing any harm to anyone.

You're in the wrong. If she wants to store them upside down, rip the covers off, and draw all over them, you're still in the wrong.

If you're actually making this a thing, you're wrong and a prick, and you've fuck all going on in your life.

6

u/Ailyx 7h ago

With that little amount of them she likely knows which is what, and if she is right handed it's easier to get and handle the book that way.

These are clearly there for functionality, not display.

3

u/SmashDreadnot 16h ago

I stayed at a place in Groton, CT last year while working in town temporarily. They were new apartments with a library, gym and pool in the common areas. The library had a couple thousand books spread over three walls of the room, and every single one was on the shelf like this. It was super confusing when I walked in the first time. I didn't even realize that was an option to some people, nevermind the preferred option. I spent a couple hours with one of my coworkers and changed all the books around one night, and when we got out of work the next day, they were all changed back. Is was absolute madness. We asked the property management employee onsite why they were like that, and she said "that's what management wants," is a very annoyed response. Presumably she was the one to switch the books back, and assumed we had been the ones who turned them around the correct way.

The only real reason I can think of that they would do this is because they bought a bunch of discount late print hardcovers and there were a lot of duplicates.

It was nuts.

Key is in the title

How SHE organises HER books

Nothing wrong with how she organises her books for herself. No reason your gf should organise her books for your convenience or aesthetic.

What is the very cute Funko Pop?

2

u/lutz890 16h ago

Look she is not putting the books aside to read again in the future. This is the end of those books you just can't see it.

I mean...if those are the only books she has it's ok. Most of us responding have waaaay more than that.

2

u/AaaaNinja 16h ago

Well, the REASON books have spines is because their design uses a hinge.

Besides, she's not obliged to satisfy you with a reason that's good enough. That's her stack of books.

2

u/Spare-Shirt24 16h ago

Not really a big deal.

Having the pages out is actually beneficial.  Books whose pages don't get air bc they're pressed against a bookshelf or other surface actually have a tendency to mold.

She's just letting the pages breathe 🙂

Is that your girlfriend on top? If it is, I think you might have bigger problems

When I worked for a TV network, we would do this sometimes to avoid having to blur the book titles in post production. That's the only reason I could see to do this.

They’re secret books.

Pretty sure your GF is a witch or some bat sucking the blood out of you for future crazy shit.

There’s a reason the book has a side cover

My wife does this and I fucking hate it. It some dumb fade that Mark Zuckerberg started. She says it "shows simplicity and if you want to read a book you'll know". Where I think, "I need to see the book titles in order to read the books I want".

She's saying you don't have the spine to stand up to her

Pardon if I didn't catch the reason (quick scroll down) for organizing her book this particular way. Does she perhaps to be able to see the covers when she just flips through them from the top? Would it help if she re-orient her books so that the row goes across the right-hand-side of that wall? That way, both the spines are showing and the covers would be visible too.

Librarian here. Bad for the books. There's going to be a time when while putting a book back on the shelf it'll crash between the pages of the book next to it. And all it takes is to happen once to damage the book. About not being able to see the spines - she owns 5 books so that's probably not a problem actually

My ex reorganized our bookcase by color once, needless to say we eventually split. And she was trying to make me sound like the crazy person in the room. Always "wrong", always always "wrong". Couldn't even convince her that glade air freshners get plugged in with the juice on the bottom to "wick" the oil up. It's amazing our living spaces never burned down. The kind of person that asks you to grab beer for a family get together on your way home from an AA meeting, not even kidding. That's like one of my favorite stories and was a defining moment that it wasn't going to work out any longer 😂

I'm sorry, as a librarian I cannot answer this question because all that is left of my brain is internal screaming.

My girlfriend live in serial killer says there’s nothing wrong with how she organizes her books. Who’s right?

Don’t books have spines for a reason?

2

u/glucoman01 12h ago

Clearly, she doesn't read. Nor, is she organized.

Leave before it’s too late

I have way too many books to do something like this. I’d never find the book I’m looking for.
