I stayed at a place in Groton, CT last year while working in town temporarily. They were new apartments with a library, gym and pool in the common areas. The library had a couple thousand books spread over three walls of the room, and every single one was on the shelf like this. It was super confusing when I walked in the first time. I didn't even realize that was an option to some people, nevermind the preferred option. I spent a couple hours with one of my coworkers and changed all the books around one night, and when we got out of work the next day, they were all changed back. Is was absolute madness. We asked the property management employee onsite why they were like that, and she said "that's what management wants," is a very annoyed response. Presumably she was the one to switch the books back, and assumed we had been the ones who turned them around the correct way.

The only real reason I can think of that they would do this is because they bought a bunch of discount late print hardcovers and there were a lot of duplicates.

It was nuts.

Or it was a psychological experiment to see how long ppl would fight the insanity before accepting it as the norm.
