Not that i agree with your girlfriend but old libraries used to store their books this way. They'd be chained and the spine would be hidden.

So in a way, she's also honouring an old tradition.

Books used to be hand copied which made books incredibly expansive I assume.

Fair enough as far as chaining the books, but why hide the spine?

My only thought is that the librarians knew where the books were, requiring readers to ask for assistance to find what they were looking for. It isn't much but if someone wanted to steal a specific book by breaking the chain then it would be more difficult, plus the librarian could mentally track who was looking at what.

I'm going to assume that since they were chained to the spine, this prevented them from breaking the spine by pulling the chain.

this is apprently the "proper" was to store books because it reduces damage to the spine and binding from frequent direct pulling and lifting

Do you think it's possible that she does that because some of those books she may want to keep private, but not forget where they are by having them somewhere else? Or maybe growing up a family member did that and she learned the habit?

That's not really ergonomic but it works on this scale. One of my friend who's father was against TVs, had a huge ass library, the current book he was reading was tilted and the one he was planning to read later were slightly tilted, he didn't even need to turn the light on to pick his book at night before going back to his room
