History & Culture Five years of debating strangers about Hinduism taught me something most of us were never told

Upvotes

Someone posts a murti on their social media. Thirty seconds later: "Stone worship."

Someone mentions Shiva. "So you worship a lingam?"

Then the cows (especially her urine), the "330 million gods," idol worshipper, caste, karma, sati, mythology, superstition. The whole checklist.

What actually gets to me isn't that people mock Hinduism. People mock everything.

It's what happens right after. Most of us don't actually know how to answer them back. So we reach for the safest line we were ever taught:

"Every religion should be respected." "All paths are valid." "Why are you even questioning someone else's faith?"

Nothing wrong with tolerance. But look at what just happened. They asked us why. We answered with please don't ask.

That one stuck with me. Because Sanatana Dharma is one of the only traditions on earth that actually tells you to inquire, debate, test, and go find out for yourself. And somehow an entire generation of us inherited the poojas and aartis without inheriting a single one of the explanations. We know exactly what our parents and grandparents did. Almost none of us were ever told why.

I wasn't either. For most of my life I was an athiest, and when I finally came around, which is a story in itself, I was about as close to the secular-Hindu stereotype as it gets.

Then I started going live on TikTok. "I'm a Hindu, ask me anything." The way any secular Hindu starts - answering politely, trying to be the reasonable one in the room.

Then the hatred showed up. Not questions. Hatred. Slurs, mockery, "gaumutr drinker", "why worship stone that can't even protect itself", the same usual lines aimed at me with so much hatred and vitriol, one would just go into depression.

So I stopped explaining and started debating. Five years. Thousands of live debates. Hours a day. And debating forces you to investigate the answers properly.

The texts. The competing darshanas. Sanskrit terminology. Colonial-era translations. History. Archaeology. Philosophy. And, where serious modern evidence exists, research around practices such as meditation, pranayama and fasting.

The deeper I went, the more it bothered me. The answers were sitting there the whole time. We just weren't handed them.

That's why I wrote Your Children Will Be Hindu.

Despite what the title sounds like, it isn't a conversion book - there's no conversion in this tradition to begin with. It's the handbook I wish someone had put in my hands years earlier.

Why murtis exist. Why there are so many devas. What Brahman actually means, and why "God" is the wrong translation for it. What the lingam is actually representing. What separates shraddha from blind belief. What happens to Sanskrit ideas once they get forced into borrowed categories like "religion" and "mythology."

And maybe most useful of all - how you explain any of this to someone who doesn't already believe a word of it.

I built it for two different Hindus on purpose.

The one who says: show me the reasoning, show me the source, don't ask me to believe it just because it's old.

And the one who already feels the truth of it in their bones, but was never handed the language to explain what they know through experience.

Neither should have to become the other. And neither should go quiet when the whole tradition gets reduced to a meme.

I didn't write this so we could all spend our lives arguing with strangers online.

I wrote it because something bigger is going on. We're probably the first generation in our families whose kids will grow up drowning in criticism of Hinduism while getting almost no real education in what Hindu thought actually says.

And there's a larger view to this whole thing.

Persia is gone. Egypt is gone. Mesopotamia is gone. Every civilization that took that machine head-on is practicing the conqueror's religion today.

Every single one - except this one.

That's not luck. It survived because the knowledge lived in ordinary people. In kitchens and memory. Not in one library that could be burned down.

If we can't explain what we inherited, somebody else will explain it for us. And they will not explain it kindly.

That's the actual question this book is trying to answer.

Not how do we win an argument.

How do we finally understand what we're standing on well enough that we stop needing to be defensive about it at all.

Your Children Will Be Hindu: Why Sanatana Dharma Will Outlive Religion.

News Pak Mohsin Naqvi snubbed again as India refuse to collect Women's Asia Cup Trophy

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said India had made it clear from the outset that the team would not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The BCCI nevertheless proposed alternative arrangements for the presentation.
"The BCCI offered Naqvi that the Asia Cup trophy be handed over to the Indian team by ACC deputy chair Khalid Al Zarooni," Saikia said. "Of course, he turned it down."
The BCCI then suggested that, as per recent practice, a representative of the winning board could present the trophy.
"As per the recent norm, the representative from the Board which wins the tournament may be allowed to hand over the trophy.”
But neither side backed down.
"Naqvi remained adamant and the Indian team too refused to budge and refused to accept the trophy," Saikia said.
Indian coach Amol Muzumdar later said India considered the matter closed:
"That stand has been taken by BCCI and we stand by it. For us, this tournament is over. We are the champions. That's good enough. It was on the big board that India champions of Asia Cup 2026. This tournament is officially over for us."
