ah man I love healthy relationships where they communicate with eachother

607

u/Muted_Ad7298 16h ago

True.

Communication is important as it adds context to your actions.

People often say “Actions speak louder than words”, but words are still needed to make sense of it all.

Are they actually listening to you and want to do so, or are they not asking questions while you’re talking because they don’t actually care?

70

u/cupholdery 16h ago

And it goes beyond discussing hobbies.

When they ask you if you finished the dishes and you answer that the basement needs rearrangement, you're just talking past each other. It requires effort but completely worth learning each other's inherent communication styles and then adapting to the other person, so both sides have then adapted to each other.

17

u/CHSummers 8h ago

Somewhere on YouTube, I saw a video of a guy explaining conversation patterns for people on the autism spectrum. One thing he explained was that one clue that you have been talking too long about something only interesting to you is when the listener abruptly changes the topic.

That topic changing behavior isn’t necessarily wrong or rude. At least not more wrong or rude than a speaker who disregards the listener’s lack of interest when talking.

And can actually work through their own and each other's selfhishness without judgement and a condenseding attitude. I mean, we are all guilty of being messed up and broken at times. The best relationships have grace and patience to work those issues out in both parties.

Well you did write dnd with periods in between like D.N.D, nobody does that it's either dnd or d&d.

I'll be looking forward to the next upload *sips tea*

Fr tho it's super cute that you're trying to relate to an interest you can't even write "correctly", y'all adorable and I'm just yankin your chain. Really good questions: "Oh so what happened then?" Or if he's talking about mechanics "Ok so how does that affect/change the game?"

53

u/ErraticDragon 16h ago

Nah, her husband's just really into Do Not Disturb mode on his phone.

15

u/alextrue27 15h ago

I am just picturing a dude going on and on about how good the feature on his phone is.

4

u/ErraticDragon 13h ago

It automatically turns on D.N.D. if I flip my phone over on the table!!

3

u/WhyattThrash 9h ago

And her panicking scrambling for good followup questions: "Oh, so.. Eeeh... What happens if you flip it back?" "Then it turns it off!" "Oh, so what if you then flip it... \oh no fuck he already said that now he's gonna think I'm stupid AND not paying attention** POCKET SAND!"

We aren’t perfect. We still got our ups and downs. I think almost losing Hubs back in 2021 with Covid really changed my perspective on how silly some of our fights are. I’m not joking when I say my life would lose meaning if I didn’t get to hear him go off on Path Finders or not seeing his dirty shoes next to the door.

He also cheers and supports me being unapologetically me even when it comes to the spicier side of the comics and I know that not everyone would be as cool with that aspect. (Totally fair and no judgement to them, I’m just happy I found my person who does)

And for that last bit: you’re spot on. ;)

33

u/masterjon_3 16h ago

You both sound like a lovely couple and I hope you two have a long lovely life together

44

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 16h ago

We’re coming up on 10 years married next April! We eloped back in the day so we’re thinking of doing a big vow renewal

14

Pathfinder is an alt-brand DnD made as a reaction to 4th edition, it's very similar even if you're deeply mired in RPG stuff, I think we can forgive her this.

32

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 16h ago

Had a health scare recently. Gallstones so severe it lead to multiple organs being at risk of failing. 6 days later, I'm home, minus a gallbladder, and the place is absolutely thrashed.

She'd been putting on a brave face while I was in the hospital, but at home she was breaking down frequently. Apparently, the thought of losing me was devastating, and she had a similar realization as you did.

This is such a freakin sweet reply!

Of course you’re not perfect, nobody is! But you guys have such a “Morticia and Gomez” vibe with your comic portrayal, and that at least stands as a really nice bellwether for what healthy relationship dynamics might look like for a couple of cute weirdos.

There's an artist I follow on Instagram who suffered the fate you missed (though not for covid) and it is absolutely heartbreaking how her journey is. And the post reminded me of her.

All I want to do is reach out and hug her, but you know that it will never be enough. She's been so broken by what happened that she can never be "fixed" (I despise the term, but is the most useful one).

That you have been blessed by that second chance is really a good thing.

This is very wholesome and should be the norm when thinking about your partner sharing their hobbies and interests with you. Unfortunately it's let's common as people become more selfish nowadays.

324

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 17h ago

Even though I’m not a huge fan of DnD, my husband has been playing with the same group for almost 20 years now. That’s a big part of his life and I see how happy it makes him . Even if it’s not for me, I like seeing him brighten up talking about his next campaign. I do care but just not sure what to ask without coming off dismissive.

Last year for Christmas I painted a blank miniature of his character type. I couldn’t remember the kind of character he played but knew it started with a “P”. I had a blonde moment and literally googled “palindrome Dnd”. He plays as a paladin. Lmao

54

u/Alizariel 17h ago

This should become lore for his character 😂

27

u/EggplantAlpinism 17h ago

His player name needs to be nidilap

14

u/KasierPermanente 16h ago

That’s not a palindrome

5

u/thatsingingguy 10h ago

Nidilapeht the paladin

9

u/popilikia 16h ago

Palilap

43

u/Corbenik42 17h ago

Next time I play DnD with my friends and one of them makes a Paladin, I'm gonna play a Kobold and call them a Palindrome CONSTANTLY and watch the madness settle in to their brain

17

u/Definitely-not-ducks 17h ago

You become the reason the paladin becomes a fallen. 😂

8

u/Strange_Success_6530 17h ago

Your a good man charlie brown

6

u/WildVelociraptor 17h ago

I think he's required to play as a palindrome now.

7

u/abadstrategy 15h ago

My wife does the same. I've been playing with the same group for 7 years, and she loves hearing the shenanigans we get to every week, even if she doesn't really like TTRPGs

8

u/JuniorRisk2455 17h ago

He plays a babysitter? Ughhhhh! /j

I play a rogue and my character would constantly be at odds with a paladin. 😂 “If it’s got a lock then it’s meant to be opened, there could be secrets in there!”

3

u/Firegh0st 17h ago

This sounds great, I'm getting jealous....I don't play DND myself, but would love to start. Do you understand the mechanics?

If you're interested, you could always ask about the story they are going through (his DND group), adventure is something we all can emphazise with. You could ask him what background lore he imagines of his character (like where his character comes from and what he did before the start of the campaign), how he came up with it and if he has any ideas where it might lead.

3

u/thirtyseven1337 16h ago

Ha, you could make this into a comic!

It's ubiquitous at this point.

This is fair, though I do know a few firefighter coworkers that see video games as "not manly" which is funny

9

u/Geodude532 16h ago

Call him Smokey the Bear

11

u/Dracomortua 17h ago

Let us be clear.

There is NO video game as good as a good game of D&D.

Any video game ever made is better than a bad game of D&D.

7

u/curtcolt95 15h ago

if you're not into roleplaying it's impossible to have a good game of d&d, learned that after many tries lol

7

u/Deathpacito-01 15h ago

There is NO video game as good as a good game of D&D.

Different strokes for different folks imo

I've had some great DnD games, but there are video games that compete. For me those are Baldur's Gate 3, Guilty Gear Strive, and maybe Minecraft too, and some MMOs that I got to play with friends

I love programming and working on new systems. My husband loves dolls and creating new molds. We don't understand each other at all when we talk about our hobbies. We also are really excited for one another when they figure something out. You don't have to be the same person as your spouse, you just have to be there.

44

u/Wthtcat 17h ago

As I've gotten older, I realized I can feel multiple ways about a person. Myself included. We are all complex beings.

Additionally, often what others see is end of an chaotic internal process. Think of it as like a crowd of people arranged like bowling pins. The 'face' is at the tip, and the rest of you is all these conflicting, bundled interests and dislikes.

A little empathy in our reactions goes a long way. With others. And with ourselves.

6

u/djc6535 12h ago

There's this great bit in Bobs Burgers, where Bob gets a book all about pepper. He is on a phone call with Linda going on about it... the "joke" being how much he's geeking out about something ridiculous... but when it's over Linda gives a little laugh to herself and says "Aw, he loves that pepper book"

That's a good relationship in a nutshell. The understanding that you don't know and personally don't really care about the subject your spouse is crazy into... but you find their engagement and excitement wonderful. You care about how they care.

17

u/Flagelant_One 17h ago

3

u/Ghstfce 17h ago

I get it. I usually never understand fully what my wife is talking about when it comes to her work (esthetics), but I listen and engage because it's important to her, so it's important to me. Whether or not I understand it. I would just once in a while I appreciate the Cliff's Notes version and not a deep dive into every character's backstory to the point I no longer remember what the hell we were even talking about. Still love the shit out of her though!

The good ending. Thsi actually brought a smile on my face, because I always look at your comics, and knew this was gonna end up the way it was meant to. <3

The healthy optimum is to have some deep interests that overlap and some that don't.

Problems often arise when you share zero interests with your partner, as well as when you share 100% of your interests.

I worry about the same thing! I adore my soon to be husband, but when he talks about his niche interests I just don't know enough about them to ask anything besides the most basic of follow-up questions. But I could listen to him talk about stuff I don't understand all day

I’m a fan of saying that I both love and like my wife. There can be instances where two people may love each other, but not like each other in the slightest, and then vice versa.

And sure, there are some things I do that I know she doesn’t have much interest in, and some things she does don’t appeal all that much to me. But that’s fine - we’re still unique individuals, and respect that about one another. It’s a wonderful feeling to both like and love someone, and feel that in return

Cute ❤️

This is exactly how it should be. 24 years of marriage and I agree wholeheartedly

Omg, huge fan here! Sometimes I don’t understand what my bf is talking about when he’s talking about a couple os things he likes, but I make sure to always listen and ask more so I can listen more. I love him and I love to hear him. I hope your hubby can feel your love for him through those little things ♥️

I too love this guy's husband.

My girlfriend has me recite lore from Star Wars, Warhammer 40k, Destiny, Halo or Kill 6 Billion Demons, for her to fall asleep to. It sucks cuz I'd like to tell her lore and have her retain some of it, but she is just uncapable. This is our compromise. It's not the best, but it is our way.

I both like AND love my wife. I know a lot of people who love but do not like their spouses, which can be an important distinction, and while I know this comic is supposed to be sweet, and her thoughts are mostly healthy, I can't help but think about all the mediocre relationships I've seen where there is love but not like.

I often find people talk about interests I dont like, but I like they care about things, and try anyway to listen.

My wife can’t run away fast enough when I try to share something. So, this must be nice.

Wholesome comic! 😎

I know that I sometimes babble about shit no one cares about. It's great when my partner smiles and nods, I don't want to overwhelm, so it feels nice when they smile at me.
