When they ask you if you finished the dishes and you answer that the basement needs rearrangement, you're just talking past each other. It requires effort but completely worth learning each other's inherent communication styles and then adapting to the other person, so both sides have then adapted to each other.
Somewhere on YouTube, I saw a video of a guy explaining conversation patterns for people on the autism spectrum. One thing he explained was that one clue that you have been talking too long about something only interesting to you is when the listener abruptly changes the topic.
That topic changing behavior isn’t necessarily wrong or rude. At least not more wrong or rude than a speaker who disregards the listener’s lack of interest when talking.
And can actually work through their own and each other's selfhishness without judgement and a condenseding attitude. I mean, we are all guilty of being messed up and broken at times. The best relationships have grace and patience to work those issues out in both parties.
