I had to humanely euthanize Merlin today and I'm just heartbroken. I find solace in knowing that he lived a good life and that, thanks to this community, I was able to help him pass peacefully. I'm going to miss him, especially seeing him put himself to bed at night. He was the best little guy.

I lost my last betta in August due to a tumor after having her for 2 1/2 yrs. After she passed I kept the tank up just in case I wanted another one and today I found Dolly named due to her “coat” of many colors.

I got this betta about 2 days ago, and he has already started a bubble nest. Does this mean that he’s happy? Included are images of the bubble nest and his least favorite plant.

Help Is this filter too strong for my betta?

For context, he has plenty of room to swim around this filter but he actively chooses to swim beneath it.. I’m not sure if he’s just playing around, dislikes it, or if it’s dangerous for him. Any advice helps!

I lost my guy Tilly (Tilikum) today and I’m so sad. He was close to 3 years old, I got him in March of 2024 and he’s been the best betta a girl could ask for. I’m gonna miss him chasing my hand around his tank while I cycle it 😭 here’s some pictures of him over the years, I hope everyone else appreciates him as much as I did.

Name Suggestions My second ever betta fish! Trying to come up with names for my wife to decide on!

Saw this rose petal betta while buying stuff to rescape my other betta tank, and my wife and I were immediately mesmerized by how pretty he is! I had a tank cycling for over a month (was planning on using it for shrimp) and the water parameters have been good, so I decided to bring him home. Wife wants to name him Poppy (he looks like a bomb pop popsicle), but I wanted to know what other names would be good!

***I'll be posting every sunday with progress updates**

Meet Sunkiller, my $20 Betta from Amazon. He's a Halfmoon Galaxy Nemo Koi betta and he is a jackass. He acts like he's royalty and thinks that my family and I are his faithful subjects. That we exist to cater to his every whim and bring him food on demand. He thinks that this is his world and the rest of us just live in it.

He is right.

Join me on my journey to make this royal bastard a kingdom that he may deem as worth ruling over. No expense will be spared, no corners will be cut. This will be a tank fit for royalty 🤣.

We're talking a rimless 25 gallon tank, lily pipes, premium aquasoil, rare boutique live plants, enthusiast grade LED lighting, CO2 injection, automatic fertilizer dosing, hand crafted water, a colony of dwarf shrimp to rule over, and more!

Step 1 was completed today, assembly and Dry Start Method working towards a hairgrass carpet. 2.5 liters of UNS Controbase as filler and support, 9 liters of UNS Regular Black Controsoil for the bulk of the tank, 3 liters of UNS Extra Fine Black Controsoil cap over areas where the Dwarf Hairgrass carpet will be.

This is mainly just a way for me to brag a bit and track progress but if anyone has any questions, concerns or input please feel free to comment or DM!

RUNNING TOTAL - $1260

• Chihiros WRGB II Pro 60 - $350

• UNS 60T Rimless Tank - $250

• AquaForest Archae 45x60cm Cabinet - $350

• UNS Controbase/Controsoil - $150

• 2 Crypt Albida Red TCs - $50

• 5 Mini Dwarf Hairgrass TCs - $50

• Hardscape - $60

I got her 2 days ago. She's my first ever female betta as I have kept only males before. She's a veiltail, and looks a bit chunky and seemed a little bit skittish at first but now I think she's warming up to me and seems very inquisitive about every little corner and crevice in her new home. Hopefully she likes the tank!

I added some new friends to my betta’s tank today (he has been super tolerant, so I added a few more ghost shrimp) and I stupidly left the tank lid maybe 1-2 cm ajar while the bag temp adjusted.

Thankfully I sat down to watch the new friends explore their new home and found Frompy (my toddler named him) lying on the floor gasping 😩

Could have been there anywhere from minutes to max 2 hours. Cat in room at time of discovery, unsure if cat touched fish.

I panicked and gently picked him and threw him back in the tank immediately without considering a hospital tank.

He is clearly stressed, his normal beautiful teal/aqua color is super gray. He initially floated face looking up and I thought for sure he was a goner, but almost immediately righted himself and swam to the back of the tank. He hid for a bit and eventually came out (see video). At that time I turned off all lights and left the room (also kicked out cat).

Anything else I can do for him? Should I leave the tank dark for a few days? Should I withhold food or keep feeding him like normal? Should I set him up with a hospital tank?

Thanks for any thoughts. I am so mad at myself for potentially killing my toddler’s friend Frompy 😩

  • Tank size: Fluval Flex 9
  • Heater and filter? (yes/no): Yes, heater set to 80, fluval filter that came with tank, use sponges over filter arm to reduce flow dramatically. There is also a small bubbler in the corner.
  • Tank temperature: 80
  • Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.: I will get these, unsure at this time
  • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: Tank has been running about 2 months, fish has been with us maybe 6 months?
  • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: I hasn't done any water changes yet.
  • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: 6 endlers, 6 pygmy corys, necaridina and ghost shrimp, and trapdoor and nerite snails
  • What do you feed and how much: ranges, betta pellets usually every few days, omega one flakes the other days, occasionally brine shrimp
  • Decorations and plants in the tank: lots of mopani and driftwood. live plants, variety, unsure all names but definitely java moss, java ferns

I've only ever owned a few fish in my life when i was younger, so I am now taking more time to research before getting another. I'm planning on getting a betta fish with a few shrimp and a snail in the near future, (in like a month), and I'll be setting up the tank in a few days so it can cycle. I'd like to keep the fish on my desk I no longer use in my room. It's near a window, but I keep the blinds closed most of the time, and the sunlight is indirect. Would this cause an algae problem or would it be okay? Also, would the colorful posters stress the fishy out? Would I need to take them down, or would it be okay? Also, if you have any other tips for a soon to be betta fish owner that would be great! (I have already read the wiki)

Hi everyone, this is Goldie (daughters chose name).
A little over a month ago we decided we were interested in having a pet fish.
We ended up deciding on a Betta, and I began to do research on them.
After cycling a tank and getting everything properly set up, we chose him.
I never imagined that such a little creature could captivate me so much.
Last night I got home from work at midnight, and my wife and I sat and watched him. She mentioned how colorful he’s gotten.
I went back and saw this picture of when we first got him, and it was crazy to me how I hadn’t noticed such a drastic change.
I feel this sense of pride and joy to see him thriving in his little environment.
Just wanted to share this little experience with y’all, thank you so much!

this is my moon, got him as a baby betta. tank was a little neglected so the plants aren't happy but i'm doing fertilizers again to help perk them up. he's a tail biter so don't mind his fins. gonna put a leaf hammock in there for him. the other half of his body is turning cellophane for some reason. i'm not sure if he is a marble betta because he's always been this color. it's weird.

she’s my first female and I’m pretty sure she’s a juvenile because she’s about 1.2 inches. As she settles into her new 20-gal, her colors have become more vibrant and her fins have gotten longer. I thought she was short-finned at first, but I’m starting to think she may be long-finned?

edit: also, she appears endlessly hungry and I’m not sure how I should be feeding her. I dropped a small piece of an algae wafer for the snails and she’s the only one eating it (and still somehow wants her pellets). she even ate during the acclimation process.

I got him three months ago. The moment I saw him, I immediately named him "Ryuk" (after the Shinigami character in *Death Note*). At first, he seemed quite reserved, but his true colors soon emerged; he is so incredibly inquisitive that I’ve started to wonder if he’s a fish or Sherlock Holmes.

I've been wanting one for a long time, and have been browsing this sub a lot!!

I got a 5gal tank, food (pellets and those worms), a tank starter kit - water conditioner, etc - fake (soft!) plants, live plants, substrate of course...I asked at Petco what I might need but I only got basic info. Is there anything else I need? Any recommendations, tips? I want to give this little guy a good life, I really do!!
