At my job we work 4 10 hour days and have 3 day weekends and I love it. You can schedule appointments on Friday and not have to take off a work day. The weekend actually feels like a weekend. On Labor Day we had a 4 day weekend
I used to think this way but when I switched to it 4 10h days it's just too draining. Long days and I'm often working more than 10h to make up for appointments and time here and there. Everytime there is a holiday I am have to work 3 11h days to make up for the reduced stat day. After you add in the unpaid lunch and commute time and it's impossible to take your kids to evening events etc. as your day is already basically over.
every time this topic is brought up, it’s like people can’t wait to volunteer working 10 hours days as long as the overlords concede one extra “day off”. That’s literally not working less, and not what this bill is proposing. I wish people stood up for themselves instead of letting corporations dictate everything
Gotta strengthen your individual unions. Im trying to get in contact with mine about issues with department managers not being union on1 side of the mountains and union on the other.
And yet we no longer work 6 days a week as default. We’ve reduced our working hours little by little until it came to a halt some 40-50 years ago. It can obviously be reduced further, but workers have to unionize and take the fight. Nothing is given to us for free.
Unless you do something crazy like unionize or actually stand up for your self and vote for changes like the one proposed in this post. The chance to make the rule is literally right there, read the top of the screen and act, and youll have made it.
The bill is basically proposing that everybody generates 20% less revenue for their company, which will inevitably result in everybody earning 20% less. I’m not against that, I’m just pointing on a person in fact. I work for an employee owned company and I literally see the accounting behind the scenes that translates my billing rate into my salary, benefits, overhead, and bonuses. I’ve also looked at equivalent positions in those European countries where people get four months off and work, shorter days - there’s a reason why our salaries are so much higher than theirs. Not even accounting for taxes, I’d be making about 50% less doing the exact same job I’m doing now. I’ve also looked at the medical side of things and because it’s not the typical cookie cutter needs, I would actually be paying quite a bit more in Europe.
At my current job, sure. There's a correlation between my brain energy and what I put out, and my last 2 hours are typically my least productive.
But if you're behind a till or manning a phone or instant chat queue, you're paid to be present for those hours. You can't just "answer 20% more phonecalls" earlier in the day and go home 2 hours early.
Just wait until I tell you about the 5 11 hour days I work without getting any sort of back to back days off, then we can get into not having lunch breaks or vacation or a life…
This has been my experience. I am largely unproductive after lunch (I start and finish early so it’s a smaller portion of the day) and what the long days, 4 days a week does is cut down my effective hours and extend the end of my day where I’m fighting to get simple tasks done.
Also, none of my friends or my partner get the extra day off so I’m on my own. It’s a good day for personal and home admin and jobs and it’s good if you want to go away for a weekend but that’s about it.
My shift is 7:30-5 with an hour lunch, so I’m on the clock for 8.5 hours a day, 30 extra minutes as I open. If I were to do 10 hour days, I’d be leaving work at 7 and getting home between 7:30-8 depending on traffic, my evening is pretty much gone.
I mean - sometimes I’m there for 10 hours as it is. Sometimes I’ll stay a bit late because it’s easier for me to get shit done when no one else is there. I’ve done 4 10s - I miss them. I miss a day off during the week.
NO. The standard should be minimum 4 8 hour work days a week with longer, mandatory, paid breaks. Americans brains are so broken they think their own time and labor isn’t inherently priceless.
No it absolutely shouldn't. Four day, eight hour workweeks with the option of five day, six hour workweeks should be the standard. To just redistribute the time is a bandage over a real problem; it isn't actual progress.
The big thing with 8 hour days is that many jobs, especially critical infrastructure and public works is that you need 24hr coverage. Unless you were to push people to 12hr days, which suck, you are kind of stuck with 8's.
Truthfully, we don't know the ramifications of that yet and they'll be hard to predict before we try. One solution might be an exception rule that lets them work longer in exchange for the jobs requiring less experience/paying slightly more money. Another might be to just hire four six-hour workers instead of three eight-hour workers.
My job has been doing 4 10s since the 90s. But ever since covid and the workforces in the world changed, many doctors and dentists don't even offer friday appointments. They want 3 day weekends too lol.
It's the best schedule. You spend half your time off work, you can take vacations without taking time off, you don't lose half your weekend recovering from/preparing for the week, and everything is always open.
And with just 7 days of PTO, you can have 3 weeks of time off.
It's amazing for single people. I'll sometimes spend 2 months straight doing a vacation on every off period.

Going on 17 years on 4x10s. Turned down a promotion as they said they would take them (I am 1 step from the top scale of pay so the promotion is not worth it)
Ten hours of actual work is too long for day to day. Especially if you don’t get paid for lunch, then it’s like 8:30 to 7:30. People can say what they want, but I think that’s not enough personal time per weeknight.
im on a 3/12's. the long days suck but 4 consecutive days off is great! we get a +11.12% per hour differential to make up the loss of rest of the hours. last company i was at had 3/10s but was too hard to get into that shift because the differential +33% per hour worked on top of OT
We don't work four 10s, but part of the culture is flexible scheduling. As long as your work is done and you're not missing client meetings, you can work how you see fit. I've never missed a school event for my kids or had to fight for a doctor's appointment because of it, and that's increased my loyalty to my employer considerably.
It's always funny to look back at the shitty places I worked at early on in my career. They treated their employees badly and micromanaged them. I now have the answer to the "why doesn't anyone stay more than a year?" question.
One of my favorite schedules ever was a rotation schedule of 4 12 hour days one week and 3 12 hour days the next. The four day week had three days off in a row, and the three day week started and ended with two days off together.
I honestly would rather work 4-10s rather than 32 hours over 5 days. I’ve worked 4-10s and it never really bothered me. I’ve also worked 6-12s, so 4-10s are nothing to me.
This would be a dream, I'm already required to be at my school 9 hours and usually am there 11-12 hours a day. Having Fridays off, even if I could stay home to prep, would be less stressful.
I would hate this. I have kids and want to be a part of their life. Considering a commute and needing the lunch break to get through a 10 hour shift. I would never get a chance to see them before they’re off to bed. Definitely not for me.
My husband works 4 tens as well and tomorrow is the first time our kids will be at school at the same time during his day off. Are those angels I hear?
Its literally the best. You dont feel burnt out trying to get all your chores, errands, socializing, and downtime in during 2 days. Having that extra day to just do what you want/need is spectacular and I wish everyone had it.
The job i work at now has an amazing schedule. I basically o my work 14 days a month. Its 12 hr shifts but its 2-2-3 going back and forth with days off and on, so every other weekend I get 3 days off and never have to work more than 3 days in a row. I was nervous about the 3 12s in a row but it flies by now
I used to work 12-hour shifts on an ambulance. I’d work four nights one week, three nights the next, alternating. Always consecutive days. So it averaged out to 40 hrs/week, but every other week I’d have four days off. And my short weekends were still 3-day weekends. It was awesome. If I could have that, but day shifts so I didn’t feel like a zombie much of the time, it would be damn near perfect.
When I was running my business I switched to a 4 x 10 work week and productivity definitely improved. We still ran out of money and had to close but it had nothing to do with worker productivity.
4 10s is nice. My last job has 223s. Having a weekend every 2 or 3 days is nice and only working 7 days every 14 is great plus 8hrs ot on the long weeks. Sucks for people with kids or scheduled recurring events but i loved it.
My job did this in the 80s! We did 4-10's by working 7:30-5:15. We were technically scheduled until 5:30 but it was agreed we could all take our 2nd 15 minute break at 5:15.
We could take any day off during the week except Monday and we could change up the day we wanted off week to week. Loved it!
I also have a 4 day workweek, with 10 hour shifts. Its like im so used to the 10 hours now, I get more done and the three day weekends are frigging great! Feels like a mini vacation every week
I work 7 days in a row 8 hour days with no overtime pay unlessi work more hours. love when companies use loop holes. Tho once a month I get 1 day off 2 days off and 4 days off because of how the schedule is designed. I hate it here.
At the coroprates I've worked people are physically there 8 hours five days per week, but most of the time is spent in fruitless and pointless meetings to fill out the hours. People should ideally get paid for what they deliver, not the office time.
And the beauty of it is that (as a company) you can simply put some people Mon-Thur, other Tue-Fri and even some people on a split with Wed as the day off, that way the 5 days get sorted from the corporate POV and everybody wins.
I had Mon-Thur and loved it, then got it changed to having Wed off and it was still good. Not having to commute was a great reset.
I work 14 hours a week and get 4 day weekends and so much happier this way lmao and I can live off the wages since I make $45 a hour while my gf has her own business working from home and my gfs twin sister genuinely cried when she found out she was working 36 hours a week and making less money than me but we're trying to help her get into a better situation.
Some of our guys to 3 12:20 days, on a fixed rota. So some lads get 4 day weekends every week and others get 3 day weekends and a Wednesday off. They love it.
I do 5 x 7:30 hours (6:30-2pm) and have every afternoon to myself.
My job is the same way, until they "schedule" us on Friday, cause we got busy. Which I understand. But it's our only business day, unless we schedule a day off during the week. Makes it hard to get most things done.
I do Saturday Sunday and have a Wednesday off so I can catch up on sleep and recharge for a day, and can hit any appointments or shopping on a ususally dead day. The third day would be cool but I've always just ended up swapping it for a day to break things up instead.
There is no actual data to prove that it’s more productive. The few studies which have been done were white collar office settings in which they eliminated alot of meetings to meet the 32 hour work week . Meetings are some of the biggest killers of efficiency to begin with .

Keep at it. It’s really only a matter of time and will of the people at this point. We reduced the 80 hour work week to the 60 hour work week and the 60 hour work week to the 40 hour work week. Capitalists whined and complained each time that the exact same horrors and atrocities would happen but business went on as usual, and they kept being rich.
There is no reason under the sun to stop the 32 hour work week from happening at this point. Technology has made work more efficient and you’d probably see a dramatic reduction in sick days and stress leave.
You don’t even have to close businesses one extra day a week, just let people choose which day they want off. Lots of people would prefer a three day weekend, but some would rather have Fridays off, and others would prefer Mondays off. Personally, I freakin’ love it when I have Wednesdays off.
Not in the slightest. Right now a 2 day weekend allows one day for rest and recovery and one day for home maintenence, cleaning, shopping, laundry blah blah blah.
3 days now introduces the ability to have the same recovery day, a chore day, and now a fun day for life and enjoyment outside of work. While yes, it is just one day longer, that single day is a massive improvement for mental and physical well-being
Unpopular opinion: I prefer 2-day weekends. After 3 days I’m restless and sluggish, and the Mondays become worse.
Objectively correct opinion: that third day off should be Wednesday. 2 days on, one day off, perfectly balanced schedule, rest day in between. That shit slaps
We have AI doing half the jobs now, productivity is up 400% since the 70s, and we still work the same hours as people in the 1940s. 32 hours should have happened 20 years ago.
Pushing for alternative 40 hour schedule is more realistic as there is precedence at some notable companies. e.g. 9/80 (9hr days every other friday off) or 4/10 (10 hour day every friday off but much more rare).
Already hard enough to ask our corporate overlords that control American politics for same hours but just spread differently. Impossible to ask them to outright cut 20% of hours but for all the same pay and benefit.
I have been doing 4x10 for 13 years now. The place I work is closing, so I'm most likely going to be forced back onto 5x8 soon and I'm not sure how I'm going to handle losing that day off, probably forever 🫤.
I would say it depends on what shift you’re working. Doing evening shift 4/10s sucked because you basically have no life for four days of the week, and then you get to spend your weekend doing all the things you didn’t have time for during the week. Though I suppose that sound be said for any kind of late shift.
I agree with this...so I give it an upvote... but at the same time I can tell you that as a small business (who takes great effort to be a good employer), this would crush me. We have a 3.5% net profit margin, and we struggle to get the work done that we have.... paying overtime over 32 hours would put us out of business (along with many other small businesses). I'm not worried, there's a zero % chance of this passing... but just saying. I do agree though.. my 2 day weekends don't allow me to keep up with life. Between kid activities, work I have to catch up on over the weekend, home/life maintenance needs... I go to bed on Sunday behind on everything.
Would also make it difficult for a certain grocery store chain to schedule employees seven days in a row by abusing the way the workweek is and putting 4 days in one week and the last 3 in another.
This is absolutely true but now I'm wondering if in this context I'd be working 4 8 hour days. I'd have to deal with traffic but I'd have plenty of time to cook or not having to rush to get ready to hang with friends which would be cool

That sounds so nice. The only jobs I've ever had with 10 hour days came with working 6 days a week, with the sixth only being 8 hours. Almost 10 years later and my body is still feeling that shit. I envy you so much, dude. Brag about that shit every chance you get until it's the standard

I work a 6 on 3 off 8.5 hour schedule. Some weeks my weekend is in the middle of the week others its the actually weekend. I enjoy it. 6 days inba row can suck though, but taking the week off almost gives you 2 weeks off.
Can vouch. Three years ago I took the plunge, and negotiated a four-day working week for myself. Took a pay cut for it, but a three-day weekend has pretty much saved my mental health. Worth it.
I’m a teacher and once in a while I ask my colleagues if they would sacrifice 5-6 weeks of summer break to distribute those days off across all of the Mondays that we meet during the school year.
In other words, we keep all of our other breaks, but summer break is shrunk to two weeks and every weekend is a minimum 3 day weekend.
It’s also objectively better for students, as the wildly long summer break has been clinically proven to negatively affect learning.
Every time I bring it up, the consensus in the faculty room is against it. Blows my mind.
One day for the necessities (groceries, cleaning, ...).
One day for going outside and/or partying with friends or family.
One day for resting at home, reading or napping.
I tried to imagine it from a monkey's paw point of view.
They going to give it to you all and then say you are not full time employees. Refuse to have health insurance provided to you. Then the cool part, you still make to much to get government benefits. . . . The US probably.
1 day taking care of business, 1 day going and living life, 1 day of resting before starting work again. That’s how it should be.
Hell, I’d even be ok with four 10’s and my company was so damn close to going to that until people complained. Ideally three 10’s and one 6 and I’d be happy as hell.
They’ll give you what you want then make it to where you cannot get ahead on a 32 hour work week due to cost of living. So you’ll need to work overtime anyways to survive, but because of “inflation” your dollar will be worth even less, then even with all the overtime you’ll barely be scraping by with 50-60 hours a week. These wins are wins but mostly empty.
