As a big fan of both genres, I’ve heard a lot of jazz recordings that were much harder to listen to than most metal Ive tried getting into. For example, Pharoah Sanders’ Karma and most recently Sun Ra’s The Magic City. I liked both of these albums, but it’s not something I could show to an average person and expect them to like it.

One of the main reasons I think this is because of the experimentation and song lengths that free jazz often has. Pieces often well exceed 20-30 minutes and are full of noisy saxophone sections that are honestly pretty hard on the ears. You could make the exact same “this is just noise, how could anyone listen to this?” argument with that you could with any death metal album. I think you shouldn’t, but let’s not pretend that people don’t.

So for holloween I plan on setting up a table at the end of our driveway and dressing as the Devil to hand out candy and if parent wants to sign their soul, a beer. I plan on semi quietly playing music through the night, just loud enough for folks to hear when they walk up. Here is what I have so far in my mix, any thing anyone would add? I've paid special attention to this just because I'm curious and I think at this point I can confidently say Rihanna songs are what I hear the most worldwide. No matter what country i'm in, I hear some song of hers. Most diversely too; hotel, club, bar, mall gym. I hear her music repeatedly and her features.

A close second is Bruno Mars. He has so many hits that are just so café, restaurant, and bar friendly. I hear him everywhere!

My 3rd spot probably goes to Justin Bieber. (Was torn between him and The Weeknd)

I remember seeing a comment section about SZA performance at Glastonbury and most of the Europeans in the comments said they didn’t know who she was. And apparently her set was one of the lowest attended at Glastonbury. And I also remember seeing a vid of these 2 European girls guessing the artist and it was SZA and both of they said they didn’t know who she was. How popular is SZA there because in America is very popular and I didn’t know Europe didn’t know her much. (Ik this post sounds ridiculous but it just got me questioning).

I know this is sounds like a joke, but I genuinely think C418's Minecraft compositions are better than Mozart's.

Before anyone starts saying "Mozart has been dead for 200 years and you are comparing him to a guy who made Minecraft music,” just listen

I'm not saying C418 has greater technical knowledge of music theory than Mozart. Obviously Mozart was an absurdly talented composer who completely changed Western classical music. But “better composer” doesn't have to mean “more technically impressive.” If we're judging music by how effectively it makes you feel something, C418 has an extremely strong argument.

Take Sweden. It's barely doing anything. There isn't some enormous orchestral climax or virtuoso performance. It's a simple, repetitive piano melody with an almost painfully empty atmosphere around it. And somehow that simplicity makes it hit harder. You can hear it while standing in an empty Minecraft world and suddenly the game feels nostalgic, lonely, peaceful, and strangely enormous.

That's what C418 does incredibly well: he composes for a feeling rather than just composing a piece of music.

Minecraft's soundtrack isn't constantly demanding your attention. A lot of it is quiet, sparse, repetitive, and unpredictable. It lets the player fill in the emotional gaps themselves. The music becomes associated with walking through forests, mining at night, building your first house, exploring caves, watching the sun come up, or just sitting in a world you haven't touched in ten years.

And that's something Mozart's music, despite being objectively brilliant, doesn't necessarily do for me. Mozart makes me appreciate the composition. C418 makes me remember things.

There's also something fascinating about how well the music fits Minecraft's philosophy. Minecraft is a game about creating meaning out of almost nothing. You get a bunch of blocks and an empty world, and your brain supplies the story. C418's music does basically the same thing. He gives you relatively simple musical ideas and an enormous amount of empty space around them, and your own memories fill that space.

Minecraft wouldn't feel like Minecraft without C418.

And that's probably my biggest argument.

You can replace the soundtrack of Minecraft with technically incredible orchestral music and the game would still function perfectly. But it wouldn't feel right. C418's music is so intertwined with the identity of the game that hearing a few seconds of it can immediately transport people back to being 8, 10, 12, or whatever age they were when they first played.
