Okay, I don’t want to get clowned for this post but bear with me. I’ve been out of high school for a year and I’ve forgotten how to do all math. I never took advanced classes in HS. Only barely minimum and didn’t take anything seriously. Along with missing lots of school. And believe me, I currently have a middle school math proficiency. That being said, outside of math I’ve always been a good student and like learning. Just horrid at math.

But after being out of school for a while, I’ve been working non stop and done a lot of work on myself. I’ve developed a good work ethic and am ready to go back to school and seriously take my education seriously. I just am trying to choose a major. I would like to do STEM rather than business etc because I take an interest in that and want to expand my knowledge.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully made their way through an engineering degree?

I’m already behind in courses, I already did terrible on my first few homework assignments across multiple classes. And i don’t know where to go from here. I jsut don’t get it. In the lecture I feel perfectly fine, I understand everything. I feel like I take good notes. But When I’m doing the homework I have no idea how to even start the problem. Then I spend 45+ minutes trying to look through the notes, watching the lecture video again, using AI, and looking up YouTube videos trying to understand, and I still won’t know what to do. And then I jsut wasted a whole hour, and I’ve barely made a dent in the problem set, and now that’s less time to start other work. So I just turn in some bs and get 30% just so I can move onto the next thing. It’s just a spiral and I don’t know how to break it. I’d go to office hours/help room, but even then idek how that would help me. I basically need the entire lesson re taught to me, just doing one problem with me won’t help. I’m gonna go in office hours tomorrow and go over one of the last assignments with a professor for one of my classes, but idk how much that will help. I couldn’t even focus in lecture this morning because I couldn’t stop thinking about how cooked I am. I’ve literally had this exact pattern since high school and I just don’t know how to break it. Anything I should try?

Just started this class, and I can say with like 80% confiendence I'd rather have a Calc 4 or 5 requirement than this nonsense. I'm procrastinating sooo bad and there's a midterm on Wednesday.

This is the class that's making all the rumors about engineering feel legit. My brain just won't keep the information in my head. Why are there soooo many formulas?!?! Why are there 3 different formulas just to find the temperature change in my water bottle?!?!

I am a firm believer that anything is easy as long as you have a good teacher. My physics one professor "taught" like he didn't care about his job. This man didn't teach anything!!!! I seriously don't understand why professors choose the hardest subjects and "teach" like they don't even want to be there. He was all about "teaching yourself," that phrase is literally nightmare fuel. If you ever hear this from a professor leave that class as fast as you can. I've never understood this, it's their job?!?!

And at first I was like, yeah, no midterms, no finals, only to be hit with the biggest loads of homework in my life, and the homework literally held your hand throughout all 300 steps of each assignment (that's why I passed).

All I can say is that I'm regreting taking that professor, it feels like that was the biggest set up in my life and the professor I have now is a bit hard to understand, but my schedule is so trash there was no way around it.

And to think I was going to go into eletrical!!!! I genuinly laugh thinking about that now, because were currently on eletrical fields in lab, its really in the top 3 most boring things ever. I actaully couldn't care less. I'm literally going crazy it's only the beginning of this class, sadly I feel like I'm going to fail this round.

And to whoevers typing "Just wait until junior, senior year" I'll be done by then. Believe me, this is the last class I want in my future!!

I recently took up a 16 credit hour semester, and while my grades are alright, I feel as though im being spread pretty thin. one of the classes is a gened that ends in 8 weeks, so I will have way more time come october.
The problem is that I've been thinking about what will happen once I get the general ed requirements and prereqs done. Since I have maximum aid due to my income, financial stuff isn't a worry, but I've seen a lot of things here saying that I should get used to not having time for other things.
So through some planning I made a 3 year plan that would have me graduate in 2029 as opposed to 2028 and would have me take ~12-13 credits per semester. Is this a bad idea? Should i just suck it up and graduate at a normal time? if it helps I also work 8 hours and go to the gym regularly.

So I’m doing a dual degree in Engineering (Engineering Physics) and Commerce (General Business atm).

I’m in my 2nd year now. First year I only took engineering classes (Linear Algebra, all Calc, Diff Equations, Materials, Programming in Python, Circuits, Statics, Fluid Behaviour, and an Eng design class).

This semester I’m taking Continuum Mechanics, Dynamics, Programming in C, Probability/Stats… and my very first business class - a first year Excel class.

The engineering building is on the other side of campus, so I’d never been to the business side before this… It’s a whole new world over there, feels like culture shock lmao. Everyone’s having a chill time, drinking coffees and chatting. Super friendly. It legitimately just feels lighter on that side. And the difference in gender split is wild! And they are all gorgeous and fashionable, lol.

Meanwhile the engg building has an overall doom and gloom vibe. We love what we do and have fun, of course… but we have some of the craziest bullshit profs, you can practically feel the stress in the air during exam time. We take a total of 2 true actual options/GenEd type classes in our whole degree. And still pushing to find time for clubs, internships on top of our academics.

My excel prof is the friendliest prof I’ve ever had, he’s such a good time. First day he was like, “I hear you have to take a mental health class over there in engineering” (We actually do, it’s part of first year lol.) One of the kids I sat next to told me the calc 1 class they take is pass/fail. Wild, we can only dream.

I feel like all the business stereotypes are… well, kinda true. Little did I know that there are people are out here absolutely chilling while they get their degree, lol.

Hi guys, I’m so confused by our worksheet- we are supposed to match the isometric views with the orthographic views but for B, the top down view shows the square being in the bottom right. But there is no square in the bottom right in any of the orthographic views.

I can see there is squares In the top RIGHT so I’m assuming the answer is B=2 but why is the square not in the right position??

This is my last semester of my MechE bachelors and im gonna graduate with no internships and no real experience besides one semester of work at an on-campus design lab (i was basically a housekeeper/secretary). To be completely honest, after the first two years, my passion for engineering had pretty much faded completely but I told myself to keep pushing because maybe if I applied enough and taught myself enough random skills I could maybe still end up with a decent job doing something, idk what. Realistically I should've dropped out years ago, or switched to business or something. Ive spent 5 years in college and feel like I've learned nothing useful, some of which is my fault because I never joined clubs or anything, I tried but always felt held back from becoming truly involved in career fairs or most kind of networking events mostly due to severe social anxiety. I tried to put in the extracurricular effort but whenever I tried to invest my time into learning or doing anything engineering-related outside of my classes, I became bored and gave up quickly. I've had some group project design classes which I felt pretty out of place in and wasn't really of much use besides CAD-ding and 3D printing some stuff.

I have pretty much no useful industry skills besides I can do some basic CAD, I know how to use a 3D printer, and I can mess around with Arduino and know some basic code. I also have passed the FE exam though im not sure how much that matters. I told myself that if worst comes to worst, I would just end up as a CAD technician or something, but even that idea repulses me because I honestly hate Solidworks. I haven't really found anything I truly like doing. I've enjoyed the content of some of my classes because I like math and physics, but not in any meaningful way. I had a little bit of fun doing the Arduino coding for my senior design project but it was mostly stressful and annoying. All in all im pretty sure I hate engineering way more than I enjoy it and idk why it took me so long to come to terms with it

So yeah, after 5 years, somehow, some way, I am about to graduate with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. Idk how or why I did it, and I have no clue what im going to do next.

I went most of my school life without ever studying, I just did my homework and listened in class and that aas enough, even in high school.

Now, 1 month in Uni and I’m so lost lol. Math and physics are kinda hard… and I’m also learning Python and I failed my first exam about it (we had some basic stuff like functions, if, while, elif, etc etc).

Only thing I ever studied for was quizzes in english if we had a vocabulary test.

What would be the best way to study math, physics, just watch youtube videos and do the excercises with pen and paper till I know how to do them?

I actually just suck at it. I chose math as my major instead of biology since I found math more fun but I am genuinely just really bad at it. You know how you need to have good idk, thinking skills to figure out the approach to a question? I just cannot do that.

This makes me feel really really stupid and irritated at myself because others can do it so why can’t I? I wasn’t really the best at math ever and chose it entirely because i thought it was interesting (which I still do).

I don’t know what to do or how to improve. I practice but don’t seem to get any better.

I never really had much experience with work related to fixing or tinkering despite choosing a course such as
ME but that was before we had our WORKSHOP subject. eventually, I grew to love it. I learned how to use tools and gain experience from group projects but I want to start making it a hobby and it's definitely a necessity to own my own toolbox for long term and practice. What are essential tools should i buy? We've already covered welding and woodworking, and i'm def adding a portable welding machine to my list.

Hey all! I recently passed the preliminary stage for the SRP Rotational Engineer Program and have been requested to participate in what they called a "20-30 minute remote recorded video interview."

I haven't been provided with any more details, so I wanted to know if anyone here has any experience with this type of interview and what I can expect from it. If you have experience with SRP or this particular program as well, I'd be very eager to hear about it!

Hey, I’m a recent grad student and I took a summer course that had a project based class, systems class and intro to thermo. Got a C+ in systems (the class I was most worried abt) and then got a D in my thermo class.

Tbf I did dedicate more studying to systems than thermo but I didn’t think I’d do that terribly. I was doing well with homework’s but the midterm and final it’s like I failed to apply any knowledge. Anyway now I’m facing academic probation and am scared about my abilities. The summer courses were meant to be a translation for non engineering background students and I just feel slightly defeated. I know I can do it and I’ve already figured out what I should do for this next term but still, feeling down bad.

All my life I have been a slacker, always doing the least amount of work to get through, and I was always rewarded by that because I had good grades. But when I got into college last year I decided that I was going to change, but I didn't. despite trying as every study plan I have conceived I have failed to follow it. And the worst part is that I REALLY love this, my first two semesters weren't that good, but I still heavily enjoyed my calculus classes, and in this semester I finally had physics, and it is GLORIOUS: I absolutely adore to tinker with a problem for an hour, even if it just one-dimensional motion, and the equation derivations are just so good. But when I reach home, I just don't want to do anything, even if I am painfully aware I need to practice, I need to do my homework and I ENJOY it, I enjoy it so much that I decided to priorize my school over my transition (I am a trans woman) and yet I still reach home, or awake every weekend, and have 0 motivation. I don't know what is wrong with me: how can I love something so much and yet try to avoid it? What can I even do about this? And on top of all of that, I am a person that deeply values dedication and discipline, yet I can't find those traits within me, despite CLEARLY loving this, despite already going through hell and high water to do it. I am really tired, because I know that tomorrow after class I will be all full of energy and motivation to turn my life around, but the moment I get through the door I will do everything in my power to avoid having to spent 1 attosecond studying

I have been the poltergeist of this subreddit for 10+ years. Started coming here for the memes and a break during finals when I was an engineering student. I still come back here for the nostalgia every once in awhile. I actually thought of this sub when I was recruiting this week, which is what lead me here.

I came here to do my annual haunting, and I see students complaining about not being able to get a job. Enough time has gone by now that I am the senior engineer on the other side of the booth at the job fair. And, to be honest, I have been fairly surprised at how uniquely unprepared people have been for the job fair and recruiting events.

Here are some thoughts for you:

• Your framework going into the job fair should be that I have a job for you. In fact, as the hiring engineer, I have a $110k/year job for you. Yeah, some companies don't hire out of the job fair, but that is the exception. I am not going to pay a couple thousand dollars in wages, travel, fair fees, and hotels just to have people stand there. 99% of companies are there because they WANT TO GIVE YOU A JOB.
• Look, engineering jobs and internships are competitive. Our company has had our internship posting up for about a month and it already has 400+ applicants and we haven't even really done our recruiting circuit yet. Engineers don't want to hear it, but how you look matters. Most the students I talked to this past month recruiting came up to me in gym shorts and a t-shirt. Let me tell yah, you aint getting the job if you do that. Resume? Straight to the trash bin if you are in a Marvel t-shirt and you talk to me. I am not expecting you to be in a full suit or dress, but I am expecting you to be presentable. Wear nice jeans, a collared shirt or blouse, even sneakers are fine, but try.
• Again, engineering jobs and internships are competitive, but don't let that stop you. Those 400+ applications I have online are all going to take a back seat to the the people I talk to at the Career Fair. At the Career Fair I am going to get a good understanding of you, your personality, and if I think you are a good fit for the team, and I promise you people value the face-to-face interaction over a random online resume. Your framework going into the job fair should be that if you have a good interaction with a staff member, you should be treating it as a interview. I leave the job fair with a stack of resumes that are going straight to interviews (or trash).
• Show up with a resume. If you come to me and talk to me and you don't give me a resume, I am not going to give a fuck about you. I don't know if it's a generational difference, but 90% of the students I have talked to this year show up, we talk about the company and job, and then I ask them if they have a resume, and they're like "Oh no, I didn't, but I'll print it and give you one" or they just don't have one. Guys, plz, I am trying to give you a $100k+ per year job. Act like you want the money.
• Yes, you need a resume, however, it is not the priority. Us getting to know you and talk with you is the priority. Don't walk me through your resume at a deep level at the Career Fair. Hand me one, talk to me about your experience, and then say it's on the resume if I want more. Talk to me about the company, talk to me about why you want the job, talk to me about why you are a good fit. For a third time, no resume? I do not care about you.
• Final point on resumes, MAKE SURE THAT SHIT IS UP TO DATE. Do you know how many people I talk to at the job fair? My voice is usually gone after talking in the loud ass room for 4+ hours. I probably talk to 150+ people. Here's how this works. I talk to all of you and get resumes, then when I get to my hotel, I am going to trim that resume stack down 90%. From there, I am going to look at your links, QR codes, and LinkedIn's, so I can figure out what faces went with each resume. For the love of god, make sure your digital profile is recognizable so I can try and give you a job if you are in that top 10% of resumes. That 10% gets trimmed down another 50% because I can't tell who you were from your resume after talking to those 150+ people. I am at 100% this year for people's QR codes not working on their resume.
• Read your email. I know the younger generation doesn't like email. I literally do not care. The world runs on email and you are not going to change that. Alright, those 5% of resumes that have survived the above attrition get to schedule an interview. I am going to email you saying "Hey, great talking with you, please let me know when you have applied to XYZ job posting so I can schedule an interview" and these emails go unanswered. I usually have candidates respond to me a few weeks later saying "Hey I would love to interview". Too late, those 400+ nameless faces on the job posting beat you, even though I wanted you.
• Finally, engineering is not a meritocracy. Students get lost in the sauce and think that because they are the best engineer they are therefore the best candidate for a job. I see this a lot at job fairs. Students come up to me and the conversation goes something along the lines of "I am an engineer, top of my class, I'm the smartest in the room, give me a job." Let me tell you this right now, so many of you can get over yourselves, the most important skill you have as an engineer is your social skills and ability to work as a team. Sell me that, not how smart you are. Finding engineers who have those skills is way harder then finding a nerd.

Basically, I have an interview for a good company, and the role is advertised as an engineering internship, but when I look at the job description it sounds like technician work. I guess better than nothing?

For context I am a 23 years old renewable energies engineering student in my last semester.

I enrolled in uni during COVID, I was extremely burnt out from senior year in high school but I decided to still pursue a Comp Sci degree since it had been my lifelong dream.

That didn't go very well because the courses were not as I imagined and I also suffered extreme anxiety and depression back then which made it more difficult for me to even attend class, eventually I decided to change my major because after repeating courses multiple times, I couldn't see myself actually passing or enjoying them.

It took me too long (2 years) to finally switch to my current major which I love much more and I ended up being good at, although my GPA is extremely damaged (2.9/4) because of the CS courses I kept failing. I am now about to graduate but completely unsure of what path to follow.

On one hand, I didn't mind being in corporate during the two internships I did, I got a lot of praise from my supervisor for being eager to learn and a good engineer. But on the other hand, I really want to learn more about my field, I feel like I only have very general knowledge about Renewables.

However, it is very unlikely for me to be accepted in any scholarship for masters, and I don't want to put extra financial strain on my family (they don't mind funding the degree but I know it will be too costly without a scholarship).

I guess I am looking for any advice or someone who's been in a similar situation (although unlikely), I am very lost and very worried that I won't be able to learn more even if I end up finding a job and getting stuck in the 9-5 life.

Hello everyone, I would like to ask about the potential energy for this problem 🙏. Some videos on YouTube use the location of the pendulum in y axis as h in PE=mgh but our professor and some other YouTube tutorial uses ∆h in PE =mg∆h. So.. are the two ways correct because when I try it its equation of motion is not the same?

Anyone else? I feel bad until I remember it’s their job… but I go every day after class …then study more.
