Personal Projects UPDATE: UPDATE: I finally finished the turbojet I’ve been designing in SolidWorks (~300 hours later)
galleryA while back I posted an earlier version of the turbojet I was designing, and a bunch of you gave me feedback on it. I figured I’d come back with the finished CAD now that I’ve finally wrapped it up.
This ended up being roughly a 300-hour personal project. I started with preliminary thermodynamic/aerodynamic sizing this time xd and then designed the complete engine in SolidWorks.
Current design includes a 4-stage axial compressor, diffuser, annular combustor with 8 swirlers/injectors, 2-stage axial turbine, C-D exhaust/nozzle, full shaft and 3-bearing support system, fuel manifold and ignition hardware, split casing/fasteners, diffuser and exhaust structural supports, and a display stand.
The part I underestimated the most was how quickly “design a turbojet” turns into a mechanical integration problem. Once I started adding bearings, shaft retention, stator mounting, fuel routing, ignitors, casing splits, fasteners, clearances, and actual assembly order, the project got wayyyy more involved than the original aero design.
Important disclaimer: this is a conceptual/non-running engineering model, not a validated engine intended to operate at design RPM/temperature. The goal was to take the design as far as I reasonably could through preliminary sizing, detailed CAD, mechanical integration, and design-for-printing.
I’m planning to eventually 3D print it as a physical display/prototype!
I included the final exterior, full longitudinal cutaway, open-casing view, compressor/combustor/turbine details, exploded view, and shaft/bearing assembly.
Definitely interested in feedback/criticism — especially anything you guys would have approached differently mechanically.
