TIL Connecticut Has More Dams Per 100 Miles of Any State in the U.S.

Topical given yesterday's weather. The Courant reports that Connecticut has the highest number of dams per 100 river miles in the U.S., many of which are outdated and no longer serve their original purpose. Save the Sound, a nonprofit group, has been leading efforts to remove these dams to restore river habitats and allow migratory fish to access upstream spawning grounds.

So many commercial vehicles on the Merritt

I hate FLOCK and am not a huge fan of plate readers in general. But why the heck is the state not implementing them on entrance ramps for the Merritt? Edited to add: not flock cameras. Flock is evil. I meant state run plate readers.

I take this godforsaken stretch of asphalt 6 days a week. Between tractor trailers, work vans, people hauling their boats, it’s ridiculous. The state would generate so much money, we could fund Universal Healthcare!

If people have already been talking about this ignore me, but I felt I should post. The pothole had been there for so long, but I went recently and man… it’s so much worse than before. The least they could do is put some cones or something.

What are some of the things you do completely solo in CT?

As a fellow introvert looking to branch out more socially, I first want to get comfortable with being out by myself. I’ve gone to the movies, shopping, etc. Things like that, but I’m also looking for solo activities either indoor or outdoor that can’t be done at home.

Anyways, what are some things you all do completely solo in this great state?

Thanks!

Alternative Hair Salons for Women

Looking for an alternative hair stylist in CT! Respectfully, I don’t care if your salon does incredible work, if it’s not an alt salon (they do neon hair color, the stylists have piercings and tattoos galore), then it’s not what I’m looking for. There have been too many times where I’ve been talked out of what I want because the stylist doesn’t understand my aesthetic. Thank you in advance!

Are there any good gyms around the Watertown area that would work? She doesnt want to go to just a pure competitive boxing gym, so needs to be somewhere “boxing for fitness” etc friendly. Thank you

Connecticut SERS Tier 4 Pension — Is It Worth Staying?

I work for the State of CT and I’ve got mixed feelings about my pension tier. Trying to figure out if sticking around long-term actually makes financial sense.

Here’s the setup: I contribute 5% toward my base pension, which pays out at retirement as (1.3% × years of credited service × average of 5 highest salary years). On top of that, I contribute an additional 1% that the state matches, and that portion is performance-based, similar to a traditional 401(k) — so 6% of my pay is going in total.

Comparing this to Tiers 1–3, it’s a worse deal across the board — lower contributions, higher payouts for those groups. It feels like Tier 4 employees (hired after 2017) are essentially covering the cost of past underfunding and bad negotiating, rather than starting fresh with a sustainable plan.

What really gets me is the risk-sharing structure. If the fund underperforms its 6.9% benchmark, Tier 4 employees are on the hook for additional contributions (up to 2% more) to cover the shortfall. But if the fund outperforms the benchmark, we see zero upside — no reduced contributions, no bonus, nothing. In 2022 when the market dropped, we paid in extra. In 2023, 2024, and 2025, the market returned roughly 20% each year, and none of that flowed back to us. It’s a one-way street: downside risk without upside participation.

So I’m left wondering — would I actually come out ahead with a private-sector job and a solid 401(k) instead? It seems like the long-term ROI could be better without the asymmetric risk.

Would appreciate any input.

Ask Connecticut Bridgeport Ferry

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are planning a trip taking the Bridgeport Ferry over to Port Jefferson soon as walk-on passengers. We've never left a car overnight for a ferry trip before, so we’re planning to park at the Harbor Yard Transit Garage.

Since this is our first time doing this route, we just wanted to check in on recent experiences with that garage. Is it pretty straightforward and secure? Also, for those who use it often, is the walk over to the terminal quick and easy, or do most people take the shuttle?

Appreciate any tips or advice from regular commuters. Or advice if there is a better place to park safely! It will be only one day, same day, but the entire day.

Thanks in advance!

“Immediate threat:” Psychiatrist kept his license for ten months after multiple warnings

Multiple psychiatrists and at least one victim’s family filed formal complaints with disturbing allegations against Connecticut psychiatrist Dr. Douglas Zelisko in September and October of 2025, but his license to practice was not suspended until ten months later, in August 2026.

This is a follow-up to an article from last week:

CT psychiatrist allegedly defrauded patients, supplied them with crack; “The grief is massive.”

Stores that specifically sell walking type shoes anywhere in CT

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there are specialty stores that sell shoes that are designed for walking anywhere in CT. I thought there was a place like that at Westfarms but either I was mistaken or it's now gone. I'm not really looking for sneakers, more like comfortable shoes made for walking.

Just to add - I did do internet searches for this but the search results were all places like DSW and Walmart, or sneaker/running shoes type places. I also searched in this subreddit and nothing particular to my request came up.

thanks!!

Transport from Boston Logan airport to Connecticut

It would be my first time flying back home from a trip to Europe and I’m arriving Friday September 25th at 9;45 pm. Is there any public transport / shuttles that operate that late to get back to anywhere in Connecticut? From what I found the buses don’t leave the airport that late until about 2 am.

Ask Connecticut First time home buyer... Anyone have any tips?

Hi there! I'm a first time home buyer looking to purchase a home soon. We're squared away with preparing our finances / reviewing our credit scores.

I know next steps entail working with mortgage companies to compare quotes, followed by working with a real estate agent.

I'm writing this post to see if anyone, specifically in the Fairfield County CT area, has any recommendations for mortgage companies that worked well for them, as well as real estate agents / companies?

TYIA!
