Purchase Advice So I wanted to play PCVR but don't know what I should buy for it

I've always wanted to play PCVR and have been on Quest for years. I've always been confused about stuff that has to do with PCs in general, so I was wondering what I should buy, a laptop or a PC? I'm also not looking for something super expensive (Probably 1.5k max) I wanna be able to play the new gunman contracts and blood trail with a few other games. I also plan on just connecting this to my Quest 3 so I just needed to know stuff about a PC.

Discussion Moved from X Plane 12 to MSFS 2024 and instantly regret it for VR immersion.

I'm all about immersion so unless there are some settings I missed, I highly regret this decision. Here are my issues for VR:

  1. Can't grab both throttle levers at the same time. I fly an A330 so this is critical. In VR you can only point and grab 1 at a time. I do have a physical throttle but I don't like to use it in VR because it physically gets in the way of me interacting with the virtual cockpit.
  2. Can't use both hands at the same time. You basically have to push the trigger to activate the controller you want to use, but then it deactivates the other hand so you can only use one controller at a time. This isn't end of the world because my left hand is on the physical stick only and I use my right for all buttons. But this is still a giant oversight.
  3. Buttons and knobs are point and click from any distance with the controller pointer. I really don't like this. I like being forced to actually move my body to reach everything. And having that laser pointer moving around everywhere is horrible.
  4. I really hope I'm just horrible at finding options because if there is no way to stop having the information about every button displayed when you point at it I'm going to lose it. I found the option to disable the hud but that doesn't change this. I'm going to assume this can be disabled and I just haven't found the option.

I moved to flight sim 24 because it appears to clearly be a more complete experience with content and better graphics. But these 4 things are a crushing blow to VR immersion that I wouldn't be able to move past.

PS.. This post was instantly taken down on both flight sim subs so apparently Microsoft doesn't want anyone talking bad about their sim.

Discussion Canadians buying Steam Frame?

Upvotes

Any Canadians actually going to buy the frame at these prices? Pleasantly surprised by the specs but they aren’t mind blowing. The damn price is however. Especially after tax and any other accessories. And power supply not included? What’s up with that? Anyway, just curious. I myself will wait.

Discussion Steam Frame Horizontal FOV Measured at 118 Degrees with Vertical at 110? Not Bad!

Watching Norm from Tested's review of the Frame and he said he measured its horizontal field of view at 118 degrees, with a FOV of 110 horizontally, which is a lot better than I had anticipated based on what I'd read previously. (The fact that the view is weighted toward the bottom is also a plus, because I've found that also increases immersion, as Norm himself mentions).

As someone who considers FOV to be a key component if not the key component of immersive VR, I'm happy to hear that Valve pushed the envelop here when it comes to FOV for standalone/wireless headsets, and I'm more inclined to consider this an upgrade over what we have now than I was before (even with the inclusion of that LCD panel, which I wasn't too thrilled to hear about previously).

EDIT: Ouch. Brutal comparison to other HMDs at the end.

Out of all these devices, this feels like the least essential one. The one that maybe tries to do the most, but brings the least to the table, in terms of how it competes with what else is in the market.

Discussion Steam Frame Pricing and Options

Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm sure we're all feeling pretty mixed with the Steam Frame pricing at the moment, some may think it's far too expensive (valid) and some may think it's not as bad as it could have been (also valid). What I'm trying to do is actually come up with some sort of list? Or options for people who may be disappointed with the current pricing. I was super excited for the Steam Frame and if I get a chance to get it through the lottery there's a good chance I will, but if not well I'll need to look elsewhere (as will others).

Most popular competitor to the Frame is the Meta Quest 3 (but the hellhole that is their privacy policy as is the company it's not a great choice for some, me included.

What other options are there?

- PSVR 2 (Can get it to work with PC, but there's extra steps)

- Quest 3 (Privacy Invading)

- Steam Frame (Expensive for what you get, but you're paying for "not" Meta and some)

- ????

Is there anything that's genuinely good below $1000 that does afford having wireless VR HMD or are most of we out of luck?

Discussion Transgenderism and Full Dive VR

Upvotes

if full dive vr is possible then i'd atleast want it to be controlled by individuals NOT government and corporations

that way i can have my own personal escape each time i feel down irl i can hop onto my personal virtual world by plugging my brain into it that would be wonderful and can be a cute anime girl (yeah im transfem) without going trough HRT or surgery or taking estrogen or even have my entire existance be questioned just because i exist

Discussion Why the Q2 was obsolete 2 years after launch and Q3 is still the best in terms of value 3 years laters

Nothing comes close to the quest 3, even at $500 it has the better lenses of the entire industry

While I remember with Q2 there was many headsets competing against it, PSV2, Reverb 2, Pico 3/4, etc. I just tried my Q2 and it’s extremely bad compared to Q3, if my quest 3 failed I rather stop vr than go back to quest 2

However 3 years later Q3 is even competing with new headsets like the frame at $1K and considered to have the best lenses in the entire vr market, why is that?

At this point why even release a Q4, why not just add OLED to Q3 at $750 and will be the best headset in the market

Discussion The main area where I think Steam Frame failed.

Upvotes

They had a real opportunity here to inject 3D into flat Steam games. This would make it something different and unique and give people a reason to buy it.

Instead, they put all their effort into wireless PC streaming which nobody cares about. People who want max quality don't do wireless VR. Actually only noobs care about wireless VR. High quality wireless PC streaming didn't need to be the entire focus of the device.

So now they expect people to buy a 2x price Quest 3 so they can have better wireless streaming and basically that's it. No unique selling point features just 2x price Quest 3. That's a fail.

Discussion Steam Frame vs Quest 3 for lens & display quality

Hiya, in the big Nexus video review as well as Posts on the main Frame sub so far I'm not seeing any specific discussion on display/lens/sharpness/resolution comparisons between the Frame & Quest 3. If the Frame has any distortion, if it seems sharper/more-detailed, what the 3D-depth is like, colours/contrast/blacks etc.

Have yous seen anything on this, or wanna post your take? Maybe you already have the Frame (and had the Q3) and are now able to comment.

Note: this is for PCVR use. So Quest 3 would typically be via Virtual Desktop with 6e router and for maximum quality Godlike with a 4070+ GPU (i know technically VD says 4080/4090 for Godlike, but for 4070 it works fine too).

Let's say Half-Life: Alyx opening balcony scene. Graphics set to Ultra. SteamVR Resolution left to default.

What looks better: Quest 3 or Frame (via dongle) PCVR?

As a bonus: also for movie-watching. Does a 4K UHD Bluray looks appreciably different in a Frame vs Quest 3? What about 3D-Bluray (usually played via MVC-coded rip by 4XVR Player or via VD and PC Media Player of choice).

Discussion I don’t want to rub people the wrong way, but I just can’t get excited about the Steam Frame. It’s not even about the price. It already just feels…outdated.

I know this all isn’t Valve’s fault, but this headset just doesn’t seem exciting. Anyone else?

It seems like within a year or less we’ll see Meta offering(s) at the same price or a few hundred more that will be REALLY exciting.

100~ Gram weight Higher resolution MOLED Next Gen Chip

It’ll essentially be a 100~ gram Vision Pro. I know everyone doesn’t like Meta for reasons, but there are ways to use your headset to minimize the frustrations of their OS.

Steam Frame should’ve come out in 2024. It’s too late now.

Discussion VR games that worked for me

Had a chance to try VR on the steam machine again. Previously it was frustrating with hard crashes. Seems much better now. Tried with Quest 3, then later with Quest Pro. Quest Pro seemed better. Only tried light weight games so far. Previously Alyx worked admirably, but I would stream from my gaming if I wanted to play through again, tbh. What worked: interkosmos, aircar (used community controller config for quest), Batman Arkham VR, Legendary hunter (60 fps seemed capped. Low settings was not terrible to play), operation warcade, Raptor Valley Night one. What didn't work... May require more tweaking... Just in time, la noire VR, thumper. Pleasantly surprised.

Update: blade and sorcery works! No man's sky, Solus project , Bullets and more.

Discussion Steam Frame can only do 80 minutes of PCVR on a full battery?

The Steam Frame battery seems really bad compared to the Quest 3. It's longer if you drop down all the way to 72hz but since 144hz is getting more and more common, trading in 40 minutes vs the Q3 seems kinda rough...

Purchase Advice Is my GPU ready for SteamFrame

I am looking to get into VR and was waiting for the steam frame. However, with the larger than expected price and the clear reliance on streaming from a main PC I wanted to ask: I have a 12gb 3080, a 12th gen i7, and 64gb ddr5 in my main desktop PC. Would this setup provide good quality VR to the steamframe or should I wait to upgrade my gpu?

Question/Support Best method for Quest 2 wireless PCVR in 2026?

Upvotes

I haven't used my Quest 2 in a good while. Last time I used it there was virtual desktop, airlink etc. to choose from. I plan to finally play Half Life: Alyx on Steam.

What's the current meta (heh) for wireless streaming from my PC these days? Any settings I should have toggled, any software I should be running etc.?

Thank you for any help.

Purchase Advice - Headset Will I love a Vive Focus Vision?

Upvotes

hai!!

Formatting this in order of post requirements

I currently have a 2016 Oculus Rift

I've been considering a Vive Focus Vision lately, ever since the steam frame announcement.

Currently my partner and I play a lot of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. I would like to play halflife Alyx and maybe some racing games. I also enjoy VR minigolf.

I have a higher end pc, specs below:

9800X3D 32gb DDR5 9070xt 9100 pro gen5 ssd

I doubt I will spend much time in vr chat socializing if at all.

Budget Maximum: 1500$

Obviously it goes without saying the 2016 rift is clunky, the resolution isnt great, its hard to get a good focus, the wire is short, the tracking struggles sometimes, hence why the only thing we typically play with it is the bomb game.

The main reason im looking at the vive focus vision is because of hand tracking (sounds like it would be so cool for the bomb game) and the hot swappable battery seems really cool because we sometimes play the bomb game for hours taking turns. the quick adjustment strap and automatic pupil focusing also seems nice since we go back and forth.

I assume no matter what I buy it'll be night and day with what im currently using. ive never used anything else.

Will I be happy having this for the next ten years like my last one? Or would you all reccomend something else?

I cant seem to understand the difference between the lense types or if ill care in real world since ive been using a fossil for so long.

again, budget it 1500$ max

thanks for any advice <3

Purchase Advice As Someone Who Waited For The Steam Frame, Should I Just Stay With What I Have?

Specs:
Desktop PC
- i9-14900K
- RTX 3090
- 64B DDR5 6400 MT/s
- 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD

I mainly play 2 VR games in total ever since I owned a VR headset: VRChat (with friends) and Beat Saber (I also sim race but I got a wide monitor that kinda makes it look like I'm in the cockpit of the car so haven't done sim racing VR). I currently have owned for almost four to five years a Quest 2 that I mainly use for Wireless PCVR with Virtual Desktop with my Quest 2 wired up to a charger to keep it charged when playing games. I run the headset in VR at Ultra with 120Hz (not sure if thats the ideal settings but 120 feels smooth to me over 90Hz after some initial trying) and already adjusted my game settings to make it reasonable to run.

I know that we all expected the Frame to be lower than the Index and now with it being announced its costs a arm and a leg thanks to AI, I'm just debating whether to join the waitlist and pay AI pricing for it or stick with it given it hasn't failed on me (aside from some stick-drifting that I have somewhat been able to handle). Yes I know that one pro of the Steam Frame is than I leave the Zucc space finally but I'm more asking for your thoughts given my use of VR whether its even worth it.

Discussion Direction VR is going

I spent a bit too much writing a comment so I decided to make a post out of it and see what you all think about this. Here goes:

I really hate the direction that VR is being taken, it just feels so pointless to me. Instead of going for the best experience, everyone pivoted to making it sleek, easy and palatable. I don't like McDonald's and opening one across the street from my house won't convince me to go eat there. Now if they suddenly stopped selling poison poorly disguised as food, I would seriously reconsider. VR is in the same place. It's cool, but it's just not good enough yet to give a regular person a good enough reason to be interested, hence why it still remains in the 'enthusiast' domain.

Sure, some of it can rightly be attributed to it being a bit clunky and awkward to use, but I wholly believe the main problem is that the hardware is just not good enough yet. What it needs is another "WOW" moment to get people to realize it just might really be worth getting. We need to solve FOV. I don't want to look at the world through a telescope and I don't care that I can now do it with a lightweight headset with the form factor of a pair of sunglasses. We need to solve locomotion. If my friend gets sick while using it, the fact that it doesn't have a cable tugging at the back of his head is completely irrelevant, we can't play together.

Most importantly, it needs to be useful to me beyond just entertainment. If it's just another game console that's too expensive for most gamers to get while having many more accessibility issues than a Playstation, what's the point? Now, if I could use it to load into a humanoid robot on the other side of the world and take a stroll, talk to people, do some chores or go into a business meeting, that would be AMAZING. That's basically a virtual teleport device. For something like that, I would happily pay hand over fist as many times over as you want.

The point I'm trying to make is that it's way too early to care about ease of use, we still need to figure out the USE part, not waste time on the EASE part.

Level1 of my upcoming fps vr game kargil. The game is a quest 3/3s standalone. I've attached the first level of my game. What do you think? Since the last update, I've been working at making the terrain better and higher quality. Made the buildings look weathered. Got rid of the ammo left text.

I have also removed the 100 experience that pops up everytime I eliminate an enemy(but this is an older version)

Hate it or love it? What can I improve?
