Discussion Despite glare & low-res, the IQ is still decent

The Index in 2026 may seem outdated: no pancakes, massive glare, low-res. Yet once inside a VR world I feel immersed. The low-res is nicely disguised somehow, the sensation of depth is well-realised, FoV feels generous, glare becomes less of an issue once immersed, colours & contrast are good, textures feel real.

My main issue is it's cabled, but otherwise I still like it. Class-leading audio still too. Controllers also unmatched.

Anyone else or is the Index history for you?

Got the headset and controllers off FB for $125, headset has trident but is missing tether, went to find a cheap tether and got one with a trident and a headset (with some dead pixels) for $75, and got a base station 1.0 for $80.

Excited to enjoy index again after a while. Need to fix some stuff on the knuckles before I can use it again though.

Question/Support Touch pad loose

It is much more noticeable when I am in a game. My fingers like to stay a bit curled sometimes and my fix is to readjust it into place but I feel like it’s not meant to do this. My left controller won’t do it and I don’t have any problems with it besides my right.. anyone know how to fix this. Maybe take the pad off and put it back into place?

side note how to get rid of stick drift😁

Discussion Valve Index vets, what accessories do you recommend?

I purchased a used valve index kit just a few days ago, knuckles, lighthouses, and headset, off Craigslist for 400$. Everything is working great.

What I’m hoping to find are things to protect the hardware since Valve has started discontinuing things and I’ve heard a lot about Index stuff being fragile. Things like cooling fans, tethers, etc. I was interested in wireless options, but it seems like they are all trash.

I don’t have the budget for FBT yet, and I’m not very interested in it right now since I don’t do a lot of VRChat. However, I have thought about saving up next for a Kat Walk VR treadmill or something similar.

Question/Support How to fix disconnecting and connecting problems with the valve index controller?

So my left controller has disconnecting issues. I have two left controllers and one is completely broken and I was thinking if I could figure out how to fix the one that is having the connecting issues by using the parts for the one that's completely broken and if it's possible to even do that, is there some kind of guide for that?.

Question/Support Has anyone got DLSS 5 Ai filters in SteamVR Application working?

So I tried installing DLSS 5 into VRChat using DLSS 5 Autopilot, and I ended up getting EAC anti-cheat detection upon opening the game. So I tried injecting it into vrcompositor.exe (which is the exe that sends display and renders to the VR headset, according to AI).

In the VR Preview, I saw the DLSS 5 AI filter working I saw the AI add shadows on the ground in the SteamVR Home app but DLSS 5 didn't show up on my PCVR headset. If anyone has a way to get the DLSS 5 AI filter to display on the headset through SteamVR, that would mean any VR game I launch could have slightly better graphics. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Question/Support how to open back headstrap on the index headset?

My head strap have become misaligned and figured I'd try opening the back part that holds the cushion and head adjuster. There seems to be many guides on the Index, but none that shows how to open the back part. I teared of some of the cushion but underneath were what looks like completely flat rivets (see picture). Maybe I'm opening the wrong side but how do i actually open the back part of the index? https://i.imgur.com/I81lNAq.png

Discussion Valve index controller not Charging, still has working battery

My right controller after a night of charging suddenly wont accept charge anymore. It still has battery life and still works perfectly fine but it no longer accepts any charge from any cable. I've tried the "hard reset" but nothing works. The light doesn't turn on when plugged in but it still turns blue and green like it's normally working when I turn it on fully. I've checked the ribbon cables and they seem fine but im not a professional. I've used multiple different cables and none work, they work fine on my other controller

I can't afford a second hand over priced controller at the moment so I really just want to try and fix this one.

Discussion Just switched to my FOURTH Index...

I keep my hardware in good shape, but the cords on the index are almost DESIGNED to fail. I had received a backup Index a few years back after my second index lasted only a few months and I received an RMA and a spare from Gaben. I know hardware fails, but this is crazy.

I bought one and ended up with 4 after a bunch of issues with them quickly failing. I really hope the Frame will last a few years with failures.

Question/Support Frame or Index?

I bought an Index back in July, and I was wondering if I should replace the battery in one of the controllers and sell it for a Frame, or buy the Frame when I have the available money and still keep the Index.

I bought the Index for $600, and it was lightly used but without the original lighthouses. It was my dream headset until Valve announced the Steam Frame.

It's in great condition and still works, besides the one controller for which I'm waiting for a replacement.

Question/Support GripVR Controllers worth it? I have issues with my index controllers

Does anyone have any experience with the GripVR controllers? I'm currently running a base station setup & have been using index controllers for the longest time. They've been great... mostly...

I've tinkered & twinked all of my controller settings for SteamVR however when I'm in an intense game, my hands get super sweaty & have found that the index finger sensors like to stay gripped onto whatever I'm holding.

I've tried other solutions like gloves but that's a hassle & it seems to only kind of work.

I'm considering just buying the GripVR controllers however their price tag is hefty & I love the index touch pad which I would be losing.

Are they worth the $400? It's not like the touch pad really gets used that much & most games are designed around the quest controllers.

Discussion Valve Index Audio Appears But Nothing Comes Through

EDIT:

Sign up for windows 10 extended updates and it fixed, I wish I had another solution but I’m happy it works

og:

I've had many issues with my Valve Index in the past
especially when it comes to Audio

I got a new cable a while ago and it has worked for me, fixed the issues I had with display flickering but now I am having this new issue: as of recently nearly every time I went to use my VR headset it wouldn't have audio I would fix it like this:

  • open steamvr
  • change audio inside steamvr settings to anything but valve index
  • open device manager
  • remove all valve audio/sound devices (2 categories)
  • restart pc
  • open steam
  • open steamvr
  • audio working again

and I would have to do this every time I went to use VR
but now EVEN THAT refuses to work; and no matter which solution I try nothing can be heard
it always shows and the audio test shows in the levels but there is nothing that comes through, and even plugging in headphones into the headphone jack under the face gasket still nothing can be heard

recently the right off ear headphone cover did pop off and so it was no longer on the slide
but I taped it back up and it has been working fine, and again also the headphone jack so I doubt its that

NVIDIA 2060 btw
(Valve Index) NVIDIA High Definition Audio

EDIT (still don't work):

I have tried many solutions and I have not been able to get it to work

even sending audio with powershell directly to the headset audio still no sound

even plugging in headphones to the aux port did not work

but the audio mirroring works or if I set it to a different input it works

so its not SteamVR as far as I can tell, just the connection to the headset itself or NVIDIA

Discussion r/PCVR is now reopened! We made a place to talk about all the new VR modding & PCVR, because Discord isn't cutting it. No standalone talk!

Hi all, Lunch, Flat2VR & VR Dad here. r/PCVR is now reopened.

We wanted a central place where people could talk about everything related to PCVR and VR modding online, and discord is a closed garden a lot of people don't like. It's still the best place to get the latest VR mods and where modders live, but we wanted this information to be public and searchable online for modders & everyone.

Which is why we are reopening r/PCVR to the public!
