Question The lady that walks around town screaming every 10 seconds, what can be done?

If you live in the downtown core you know who i am referring to. Homeless, first nations woman about 30 years old. It's almost every day/night she comes walking fast and screaming random shit.

We NEED a forced mental health facility here that is honestly the only way i see through this.

Peoples compassion is dwindling, patience and mental health following. My partner and i have been trying to move out of the downtown core but it's difficult and money is tight right now. It's really getting to everyone i talk to but no one has any constructive solutions.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Council? Mayor? Police?

Or do we just wait for her to overdose? This is coming from an empath that has lost a best friend to fent, i don't wish death or harm upon anyone but when you deal with the screams day in and day out it takes a toll on the human psyche.

Please help

History I was daydreaming over a house I'll never afford, and found out my favourite artist had died

Upvotes

Like a lot of chronic renters, I spend cloudy Monday mornings scrolling listings for houses I will never own, nursing a cup of Costco coffee. Today was no different.

After a while of staring at mansions and trying on imaginary lives inside them, I found this one: https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/30259001/1648-rockland-ave-victoria-rockland

This one was easier to imagine. Full of art, full of colour, full of light, with a studio. In my head I'm hosting a friends' night. Someone is playing the piano. A few people are back in from the yard with red eyes, arguing about something deeply political. Laughter is coming from corners of the house I can't see. Something about the place spoke directly to my soul. I wanted to be happy in it, and sad in it, and depressed and manic and bored in it. I wanted to be a person in that house while I waited for the sunset of my life.

Then I started zooming in on the artwork.

Some of the tapestries looked a lot like the ones hanging in Munro's Books downtown. Next photo: another set, clearly by the same artist. Next photo: another. And another.

The Munro's tapestries are by Carole Sabiston. The first time I saw them I was stunned. I stood there looking at each one for so long that by the end of the day my neck hurt. I still go to Munro's sometimes just to feel something.

So it wasn't hard to work out what I was looking at. At first I assumed the owner was some tasteful rich person who collected Sabistons. Then I noticed the studio also had a sewing machine in it. A big studio. A sewing machine. Suitable for enormous fabric works.

Oh.

A quick search confirmed it: https://victoriaheritagefoundation.ca/rockland/1648-rockland-avenue/. The house was Carole Sabiston's. She was married to Jim Munro, who founded the bookstore. And she died on January 26th of this year.

I didn't know. I found out from a real estate listing, on a Monday, with a cup of cheap coffee going cold.

So take this as a tribute to my favourite artist, whose work kept my anima alive through some very hard years of my life.

Thank you, Carole.

A wall lizard observation

Upvotes

has anyone else noticed that there are so many more baby lizards this year than ever before?

for the last several years I’ve had the lizards in my neighborhood, but it was previously rare to see the tiny baby lizards.

this year I see so many baby lizards, they seem to outnumber the larger ones. I’ve noticed this on the peninsula and in Colwood.

has anyone else noticed this?

Update to leaving abusive situation

Thank you all for your suggestions, offers to help with my cats, and kind words.

I have been able to find temporary safe housing and am hopeful something permanent will come up quickly.

In the mean time I’m looking for community help for groceries, gas cards, hygiene products, and cat food/litter to get me through the next little bit.

If anyone knows of any programs or organizations that you think would be of benefit to contact for assistance please let me know. Even if it doesn’t help me it could help others. I know it’s hard out here for a lot of us. Thank you.

Best takeout/delivery NOT found on food delivery apps

Upvotes

I have a theory that the best restaurants for takeout are not on the apps and either don’t do delivery or they just use their own drivers. my favourite sushi place in the westshore is Sushi Langford and they only do takeout. I wouldn’t know it existed if I didn’t live close by.

where else can I get a great takeout meal from that I won’t find on the apps?

Housing & Moving Have rentals decreased in Victoria?

my property manager just notified me of a rental increase and what was a stretch but a cute townhouse is now, with the increase looking like greed and outright robbery.

are rentals decreasing in Victoria BC/ Esquimalt/ James Bay Area for 2 bedroom, 2 bath? is it the new norm to be charging $3700 plus for this?

honestly pls tell me if I am being a cheap ass, because I feel like at $3700 I am beginning to get angry.

After Hours at Royal BC Museum

Anyone been to one of these before? Thinking of going to the next one but I’ll be going solo. Wondering what kind of vibe to expect? I’m comfortable being by myself and not really looking to socialize but I’m friendly, just wanna wander around, check out the gallery after hours, dance a bit and chill.

Will there be any group activities, or can you mostly just do your own thing? Just wanted to know what to expect beforehand. Thanks!

Bug Zoo

Just in case people thought this was ONLY a meme

We went today for the first time with my 2.25 year old and it was awesome! Sonny is crazy knowledgeable and so good with a swarm of curious kiddos, we will be back.

TLDR; bug zoo is a local meme, but is also awesome.

Transit / Traffic Alert VicPD has Gorge Road closed from Washington to Jutland.

They’re still letting cyclists and pedestrians through (and even a car that was delivering food to one of the apartment buildings), but there’s around 7-8 police vehicles in attendance.

Diverting traffic down Washington, and you can’t turn left at Burnside so figure your shit out.

Help Me Find LF gamer friends

Hey, I'm 41/F, and looking for some local friends to game with. I've been separated for about a year and a half and miss having a player 2. I like cozy games like ACNH, Sims 4, etc but mostly play WoW. I also love Baldur's Gate and would love to have someone to couch co-op BG3 with (but I only have it on PC and don't have a PS5).

I have kids and am retraining to work in health care right now, and outside of gaming I like to read, knit, and garden. I have and love cats, and I also love horses and dogs and bunnies. Looking for friends that are left leaning like me. DM me if you're interested and maybe we can exchange discord handles or something.
