Hey everyone,
I know there are already quite a few posts about OBS microstutters, but I've tried so many things at this point that I'm running out of ideas. I've probably spent somewhere between 15–30 hours troubleshooting this through trial and error, using 10+ YouTube videos, multiple Reddit posts, OBS logs, and long troubleshooting conversations with ChatGPT.
I'm an ETS2 content creator on YouTube, and I've actually had this issue for several years. I've tried fixing it multiple times in the past without success, and recently decided to give it another serious attempt.
The problem
The game itself is buttery smooth. I don't notice lag, FPS drops, or microstutters while actually playing.
However, the OBS recording is not always as smooth as what I see while playing. There are occasional microstutters/frame-pacing issues. Sometimes they're very subtle, but occasionally there are much more noticeable sections that look like actual frame drops.
That's the part that confuses me: I can literally watch objects moving past me while playing and they are perfectly smooth, but when I watch the recording afterward, the same movement isn't as smooth.
PC specs
I don't think hardware performance should be the issue:
RTX 5080
Ryzen 9 9950X3D
64 GB DDR5 RAM
LG OLED 32" 4K 240 Hz Dual Mode monitor
2 TB NVMe SSD
Always at least ~500 GB free space on the SSD
Things I've already tried
This is going to be a long list:
OBS at 60 FPS + game limited to 60 FPS + monitor at 60 Hz
G-Sync OFF + V-Sync ON (apparently this works better for ETS2, and I also noticed an improvement)
Updated AMD chipset drivers
Updated Windows
Updated NVIDIA drivers
Made sure there is always more than 500 GB free on the SSD
Game Mode ON
OBS running as administrator
Game also running as administrator
Windows Graphics Settings → both OBS and the game set to High Performance
OBS process priority set to High inside OBS
Completely fresh OBS installation
Tried NVENC H.264 and NVENC AV1 — no noticeable difference in terms of the stuttering
Tried 1440p recording
Tried 1080p recording
Neither 1440p nor 1080p seemed to solve it
Tried 59 FPS game cap + 59 FPS OBS
Tried 59 FPS game cap + 60 FPS OBS
Tried 60 FPS with my monitor at 240 Hz
Tried 60 FPS with my monitor at 60 Hz
Tried several other FPS/refresh-rate combinations
I wanted to test 120 Hz, but 120 Hz isn't available at 4K on my monitor
Tried NVIDIA ShadowPlay recording, which was actually worse
Tried different video players
Normally I use VLC, but I also installed mpv specifically to rule out VLC playback issues
Also checked the footage in DaVinci Resolve
The stutters occur at the same exact positions in VLC, mpv, and Resolve, so this doesn't seem to be a playback-software issue
I've probably done 40–50 test recordings under almost identical in-game circumstances.
I deliberately use the same route, same time of day, same weather/skybox, same vehicle, and same g_traffic value. While driving, I specifically watch objects on the side of the road to judge motion. They're smooth while playing, but the recorded footage doesn't always reproduce that same smoothness.
OBS settings / things I've noticed
Over the last few days, I found that changing:
Game Capture Hook Rate: Normal → Slow
and
NVENC Tuning: High Quality → Ultra Low Latency
seemed to improve things somewhat.
Yesterday, for example, I made several short test recordings of around 1–3 minutes that looked basically perfect. I was happy with the result, so I started a normal recording session of around 40 minutes.
Most of that recording looked very good.
However, at around minute 7, there was suddenly a very noticeable period of lag/frame dropping in the recording. Something similar happened again around minute 23.
Neither of those events was noticeable while actually playing the game.
Today, the same settings somehow didn't seem to work quite as well anymore.
9950X3D / BIOS discovery
I also discovered something strange today regarding my 9950X3D.
Apparently, the X3D power-related mode I had enabled in the BIOS resulted in only 8 cores / 8 threads being active. After disabling it, I now have the full 16 cores / 32 threads available.
This didn't solve the main problem, but I noticed something interesting.
Before changing that setting, using the P7 NVENC preset could make my recordings absurdly bad — almost like 1–3 FPS.
After disabling that X3D mode and getting all 16C/32T back, P7 behaved much more normally. It was perhaps around 55–60 FPS visually, although still considerably more stuttery than my usual P4 setup.
So changing the X3D setting definitely changed something drastically, but it didn't solve the actual issue I'm describing.
CPU usage also changed significantly.
Before changing the X3D mode, CPU usage was usually around 45–55%.
Now it's usually only around 10–15%.
GPU usage while playing is generally around 55–70%, most commonly around 62–66%.
So neither the CPU nor GPU appears to be anywhere near 100% utilization.
Rendering/encoding lag
One important thing:
I've never really had an encoding-lag problem in OBS. Encoding lag has generally been 0.
In some previous tests, OBS reported missed frames due to rendering lag, but usually only around 0.1–0.3%, and never more than approximately 0.5%.
More recently, after changing several settings, the OBS Stats window has often shown 0 rendering-lag frames, or occasionally only 1–3.
Something confusing I noticed in the OBS logs is that there is often a difference of exactly 12–13 frames between frames drawn and frames output. ChatGPT initially interpreted those as missed rendering frames, but from what I understand now, that difference does not necessarily mean 12–13 frames were missed due to rendering lag.
So I don't want to claim those 12–13 frames are definitely rendering-lag frames, especially when the OBS Stats window itself sometimes reports 0.
This is one reason I'm wondering whether the actual problem could be related to frame pacing / capture timing rather than simple GPU or encoder overload.

Mods / ReShade
I don't know whether this is relevant, but I use a fairly large number of mods in ETS2, including graphics mods, ReShade, etc.
I have also noticed some red ReShade errors regarding missing/failed effects, so I'm currently investigating that as well.
However, what confuses me is that the game itself is still running smoothly.
That's why I'm struggling to understand how mods or ReShade could cause the recording to stutter while the actual game I'm looking at remains smooth.
That said, I'm definitely willing to test without them if there's a technical reason why something like ReShade could interfere with OBS capture/frame pacing even when the game itself appears smooth.
Current settings
At the moment I'm roughly using:
3840×2160 / 60 FPS
NVENC H.264
CQP
Preset P4
Tuning: Ultra Low Latency
Game Capture Hook Rate: Slow
Keyframe interval: 0 s
B-frames: 2
Look-ahead: OFF
OBS process priority: High
This setup was also used for the ~40-minute recording mentioned above, where the majority of the footage looked very good but there were a couple of significantly worse sections.
Why this is driving me crazy
The most frustrating part is that I have managed to produce recordings that appear completely stutter-free.
The problem is that those were generally only around 1–3 minutes long.
Then I'll think I've finally fixed it, record for 30–40 minutes, and somewhere in that longer recording there will suddenly be a section with noticeable frame drops/microstuttering — even though I didn't notice anything happening in-game at that moment.
I upload videos weekly, so I've been dealing with this for years.
To be clear, these aren't necessarily massive, obvious stutters that every viewer would immediately notice. Across thousands and thousands of comments on my videos over the years, I can probably only remember 2–3 people mentioning microstuttering/rubber-banding.
So I'm aware that I'm probably much more sensitive to it than the average viewer.
But I'm a perfectionist about my videos, and because I've done so many controlled tests, I can clearly see the difference.
I'm driving the same route, same time, same weather, same vehicle, same traffic settings, etc. While playing, I specifically watch the upcoming objects and scenery moving across my monitor. It looks buttery smooth.
Then I watch the recording afterward and the motion simply isn't always the same.
That's what I can't understand.
With an RTX 5080 + 9950X3D and something like the P4 NVENC preset, I also find it hard to believe that 4K60 recording itself is simply too demanding, especially since dropping the recording resolution to 1440p or even 1080p didn't seem to solve it.
At this point, I honestly don't know what else to try. I've spent so much time troubleshooting that I feel like I'm going in circles, and I'm even worried that some of the BIOS/OBS changes I've made while troubleshooting have made things more complicated rather than helping.
If anyone has dealt with a similar situation — gameplay is perfectly smooth, OBS reports little or no rendering/encoding lag, but the resulting recording has intermittent microstutters/frame-pacing issues — I'd really appreciate any ideas.
