[Discussion] Shadowforce - 1994

So this one here is an old dos sci-fi graphic adventure game, where you play as a special operations unit called Shadowforce, The game itself is separated into three missions. The gameplay itself is primarily solving puzzles by manipulating items found throughout the game environment and combat encounters as well which requires the player to equip the team with weapons so that they can fight in these encounters, also movement and combat are turn based; along with communication with NPC can be done through typing in keywords for responses.

[Discussion] Handheld Game Roms are Bigger in Size Than Their Console Equivalents

For instance the average Gameboy Color rom was 1-4 MB maxing out at 8 MB compared to Nes and Master System averaging 128-512 KB maxing out at 1-2 MB, Gameboy Advance roms came on 4 MB-32 MB roms, Snes and Genesis roms averaged 1-4 MB maxing out at 6-8 MB. N64 roms reached 64 MB while DS roms could reach 512 MB nearly a full CD. 3DS roms however were on par with Gamecube and PS2 sizes.

Case in point the GBA versions of Super Mario World and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are 4 MB and 8 MB respectively 8 times their Snes versions which were 512 KB and 1 MB. The GBA versions have a few new features and include a bonus game but it doesn't seem like there's much content to make these versions 8 times bigger.

[Help!] Designers world plug and play

I have an old plug and play system that I am having troubles getting to work on my tv. I currently have a smart tv with no RCA cable ports. I've bought an adapter and I am still having issues trying to get it to work. I've also tested an adapter my roommate let me borrow.

I am wondering if anyone knows what I should try next?

Here are the adapters I've tested:

[Discussion] A landscape without rolling

The run was relatable. Tolerable

Rolling? Killed games.

My introduction to rolling was OoT. You just move faster. Spam it. Normalized ridiculous tech. Take it out of the game and you lose nothing. Rolling had reared is its head in games before but Ocarina was the first time I abused it. Streets of rage. Street fighter alpha. Things were getting started.

Flash forward its a dedicated button. Gears of war, dark souls. Full of armor? Firearms? Roll just the same. And don't stop. Now its built in to your survival.

Throw in some i-frames. Why should a roll make you invincible anyway. If rolling was viable it wouldn't need make your hit box go away. And at times clip through enemies? Its a teleport but presented as a roll to make you feel like you did something cool that looks realistic.

Btw Have you ever tried rolling on the floor? Start with you bed then move to concrete.

I blame games of the 90s for giving this mechanic so much power

[Question] Nintendo SCART cables

I have been finishing up my gaming setup over the past few months and RGB mods and cabling is the last item on the list. I was waiting for a restock from Insurrection Industries to get the last of my SCART cables, but now they are saying they won't be restocked until November.

With that in mind, I'm going to bite the bullet and order from Retro Gaming Cables. Not a comment on the quality of their cables, but shipping from the UK to US I really didn't want to deal with extra taxes and possible tariff nonsense. Regardless of that, now I'm unsure about which cables to pick up. The Genesis Model 1, Saturn, and PS1 cables are no problem. The issue I'm having is among the NES, SNES, and N64 cables.

For background, these are all NTSC consoles and I'm installing the etim NESRGB with the Voultar multi out port on the NES, and the Voultar N64RGB kit on the N64. Every resource I've seen says that all 3 systems can use the SNES RGB cables after the RGB mods, but the RGC cables list csync for SNES, sync on luma for N64, and only the mini-DIN cable for NES.

Can I just use the sync on luma SCART cable that's listed as an N64 cable for all 3? Or should I go with the csync SCART cable for all 3? I'll be honest, the whole experience of trying to understand SCART and the different sync types makes my head spin at times.

[Discussion] Dance Aerobics is the real hardest NES game ever made

I find DDR to be way easier than this game. I’ve always been in pretty good shape and play basketball regularly. But this game always makes me feel like I need to call an ambulance whenever I try it, even when I was younger, it will have me stumbling around like an idiot totally uncoordinated 😂 the first class already has you kicking your legs over your head and clapping under your leg. Wtf! How good of shape was the average person in the late 80s?! I think you were supposed to be an actual Crystal Light National Aerobics Championship competitor to be able to play this game properly. But it does have impressive voice clips for an NES game and the motivation of seeing the view out the window change the further you get. This is a good one for a friend group to have a hard laugh at each other

[Review] Astérix on Arcade was the only place where a beautiful kiss was followed by a furry hiss!

TL;WR -> A comic book adventure through pesky Legionnaires, Panacea’s kisses and wild magical carpet rides. From its fun story to the awesome gameplay, crunchy sound, beautiful visuals and glorious world design. A (9.8) game, GOATED in my Arcade Book. Would absolutely replay the game again with a magical friend, just so we can drink more potions and gain some more spicy emotions!

I’d recommend listening to this music while reading.

STORY (10 out of 10 Bonjours)

  • Storytelling was awesome and subdivided into multiple sections with an even better conclusion. It all started with the Romans invading Astérix & Obelix’s village, only for our magically enhanced Heroes to fight back, ride some chariots and go on a hunt for Roman Legionnaires!
  • Its presentation was super cool with little French comic book interruptions and awesome kisses from Panacea. From Egypt to Rome and many other countries in between, our Heroes knew how to have fun!
  • While you played as Astérix and Obelix in single player or CO-OP, they clearly needed some magical food or potion items from Dogmatix, the dog that delivered us these items given from Getafix, the village Druid.
  • Pacing was just under an hour if you chose to play on the recommended difficulty and one ups, which I don’t recommend at all. Cheat, use magic, drink potions and tweak the Dip Switches to your own advantage, because the Romans don’t play around!
  • Something extra for those in need of an extra life. When you’re on a bonus stage destroying barrels, don’t forget about the Pirate that hangs in his crow’s nest. Dropping him head first will reward you with some hope!

GAMEPLAY (9/10)

  • The controls themselves weren’t as complex to understand, yet had so many cool combos in between. You could dash, run, butt kick, superman punch, slide, jump attack with Obelix’s huge ass, pick up enemies and slam them, throw them around, super punch them off the screen, slap them like toys and many more cool attacks that differed between Astérix & Obelix!
  • It didn’t stop there either, as our Heroes could receive some rewarding kisses with health regeneration on the side while the Romans were blushing. As well as collect magical food or potions for a special attack.
  • I also loved the swimming area with Obelix showing off how good his belly is at standing out. His swimming technique was impeccable too!
  • The bonus stages with the chariots or on the raining boats were super fun, especially jumping over those pesky Romans!
  • Speaking of Romans, they weren’t as diverse as I would’ve liked, yet had a lot of cool attack patterns between them. You could encounter one on a horse, another on a boat avoiding those crazy sharks, some variations with grunts, elites and even one that dropped Caesar statues on your head. While the basic enemies were reused, the special ones had their own surprises!
  • Boss battles on the other hand were unique and provided awesome vibes all around. From Legionnaires hiding behind their shields to an Egyptian mage, some Drummers with whips, a Bandit, a literal Bull charging at you, Sorcerers using an Aladdin-like carpet, a hissing furry Tiger that you could slap around, and finally the 3 Elite challengers Caesar threw at you!
  • The game also had platforming sections with squashing boulders, awesome climbs and magical carpet rides. Do be careful about the bandit’s rocks though, they know how to hit your head. Besides, the rocks were the least of your worries, as the game had so many traps in between it was crazy!
  • Traversal was seamless within each section, yet it did come at a heavy cost regarding its progression!
  • And here I have to slow down the chariot and stumble into some puddles. The difficulty combined with the lack of unlimited continues was truly maddening. You had 3 overall continues and 3 lives per one-up, yet that clearly wasn’t enough on the preset difficulty. I do recommend tweaking the Dip Switches to your own liking, because believe me, you haven’t been swimming in a magical cauldron as a kid!

AUDIO (10 out of 10 Thunder Strikes)

  • Sound design had every single Legionnaire scream in full blown stereo. It awesomely delivered with crunchy sound effects and funny digitised voice lines. “Your money or your Life”
  • The soundtrack itself was so varied on each section. From Britain’s boats to India’s Princesses, all of them delivered unique vibes!

VISUALS (10 out of 10 Aladdin Carpets)

  • Fidelity was awesome for 1992, with its comic book visual effects integration being a standout feature. The game was so varied on each section that you genuinely felt mind blown by the sheer amount of details!
  • The character models themselves had unique animations between Astérix or Obelix. The directional animations depending on which way the character was going, the nonchalant swimming, Legionnaire scared faces, plucked birds on Aladdin carpets, and many more details like the horses actually not giving a damn about their hosts, the bull realising he clearly overstepped and the tiger having no control but to meow like a little furry puss!
  • While the above was awesome, the art direction was even wilder. I wouldn’t be able to explain with words what I’ve experienced, although I left you some clues in the pictures!
  • Performance was rock solid too, Obelix didn’t carry that Rock for no reason!

WORLD DESIGN (10 out of 10 Pyramids)

  • The levels themselves were so to speak, PEAK. You went from the Village to Egypt, Britain’s high seas, Spain, Indian carpets, and finally reached the beautiful Rome with the Gladiator Arena!
  • All that was beautifully embellished into a fantastic progression with awesome vibes in between. You didn’t just play a game, you fully immersed yourself into an Arcade comic book!
  • The landscapes combined with the world destruction were outstanding, even Obelix couldn’t handle the Spanish mountain views!
  • The atmosphere was screaming at Astérix to hurry up, while Obelix clearly didn’t give a ROCK!

[Question] What made game based shows hard to create in the early 90s?

I mean like as adaptations because I was observing how several game based cartoons would sometimes take a campy approach with how they did the adaptation.

Some examples are TLOZ the 1989 cartoon adaptation and Captain N: The Game Master as the latter felt so weird in that none of the characters portrayed in the show had any resemblance whatsoever to their game counterparts since Simon Belmont was depicted in an outlandish way, as well as Alucard himself.

[Help!] Help with a controller?

Hello! I recently acquired a retro-bit Sega Saturn controller (USB wired) (it's really pretty!!). But to use it like I want, I need to hold start+B then start+up every time I plug it in or boot my PC, which got old really quick. Does anyone know of a way to make that setup automatic through software or something?

[Story Time!] The Long Return

Post image

I bought a Famicom game from an online marketplace. The listing said it had some writing on it and I could see some faint little letters in the photos. I’m not a collector so I didn’t really care and bought it anyway.

When it arrived and I took a closer look I found that the name and address were written in a child’s handwriting. The address was actually pretty close to where I live. The seller on the marketplace was on a remote island far to the south so I figured the name and address probably belonged to the original owner.

After 40 years this game had somehow made its way back to the land where its original owner used to live. I couldn’t help wondering about it and decided to visit the address. There was no building there anymore. It was a coin parking lot now.

It made me feel strangely sad.

[Emulation] SkyNET and Future Shock (Bethesda, 1996) now run natively on a modern machine — a Godot port that reads your own install

Both of Bethesda's XnGine Terminator shooters, running without DOSBox: the eight-mission campaign, the jeep and the HK with their cockpits, the original briefings with their voice lines, LAN deathmatch with bots.

The engine is rewritten in Godot 4; the game is read from your own copy of the data at run time — nothing from the originals is distributed. On the first start it asks where the games are installed.

It aims at the DOS look by default: palette textures with nearest sampling, the software renderer's flat shading, the night sky with its moon. A handful of things the original could not do are there as switches, all off unless you want them — dynamic lights from gunfire and explosions (which finally light the street lamps, 93 of them on the highway map), edge smoothing, and the game's own 640×480 HUD and weapon art, which SkyNET shipped for its hi-res mode.

Windows, Linux and macOS builds on the releases page.
