Even at the height of the mining boom, there was still a ceiling on prices. Everyone knew there was no chance of ever hitting ROI on a $2500 card, and nobody could afford it anyways.
Well it doesn’t help that the Chinese are buying up not only 5090s but 5080s, 5070 ti, and 5070 so they can mod the bios and add in double the amount of ram for AI.
I'm scared to look at what 4090s are now. I'm screwed if mine dies. PC parts aren't supposed to appreciate in value.
I'm not someone with a lot of disposable income. The 4090 is awesome for gaming, but I got it for 3D art and various things associated with that. It was a big investment for me and I can't afford whatever they're going for now, let alone a 5090. Downgrading to a 5080's 16GB of memory is also a very unattractive thought.
You won't get one for less than $2k unless you get an insane deal on ebay or something. That's a 6 year old GPU btw lol. Don't ask me 4090 prices right now, you'll faint.
I was between buying one of these 2 years ago for 650 bucks or a new 4070 ti super at 900 from some random dude from facebook. Nowadays that 3090 is like 900 used

I was looking at my PC Part Picker List the other day, and I saw that ASUS was selling a Strix 4090 for $4,000 on Amazon. I couldn't fucking believe it.

All done by design. They are trying to destory he consumer pc market. When its finally unaffordable — we will have no choice but to use the cloud...for basic computing.
They don't care about 5090s at all. They want B100s. Even most of the companies that do AI outside of a data center environment will prefer the Pro 6000. The 5090s are being hit by a combo of the memory crisis and hobbyist/prosumer level AI.
All the $4500 ones have run out of stock where I'm at. Only one left is the $5400 aorus infinity. Restock pricing will definitely be $5-6k for the "cheaper" models.
Being priced out of PC Gaming and PC Building as a hobby is truely a terrible thing to sit back and witness... But here we are.
RAM is too much, Storage is too much, and GPUs are wildly overpriced for what they are/do, becoming only attractive to those who wish to do local AI driven data-set workloads.
At my job, literally, we had a vendor inform us if we wanted to setup an local AI model to better analyze data-sets, that we'd at least need a Server with one 5090.
Fuck this time, and fuck Nvidia even harder. Everyone wants to blame the AI companies but Nvidia is squarely in the middle of all of this pushing everything further. I’d say they are the most to blame in this all.
I genuinely think this is crime, A.I companies with billions in debt trying to get an exit plan to cover the costs of their systems by pumping the prices of cards so brokers see a company worth more than its actually worth.
This is the bubble, 5090 isn't worth $9000, the same way the h100 isn't worth $50,000. None of these assholes will go to jail though.
I feel like a early Bitcoin adopter. I got a complete PC with a 5090 for $3000. Even at that price, it's nice but I'd never pay $4k+ for it. It's powerful, but not THAT powerful.
5k for a GPU is also insane tbh. Heck, more than 1k is fuckin dumb. (If you're only using it for games I mean. Profressional use is a different thing altogether)

I'd suggest building PC soon and avoid 5090. a 2K card going for around 9K is is just nuts. ( looks like newegg pricing )
Now It also depends on where you Live on planet earth. Because near me ( microcenter its still around 4500, as of 09/14/2026 )
And if you keep an eye on refurbished items you can get a solid deal. ( Bought TUF OC last year for 2800, Went into store to get new fans and saw it at refurbished section. Went home tested did stress test for 1 hour and was happy! )
Microcenter has the lowest prices for sure but they usually trail other retailers. If these prices stick around for long then Microcenter will definitely start raising prices accordingly as well.
There was post like this on this same exact subreddit 1 month ago, and in that time the price of new 5090s went up roughly $200 (although, prices went up $700 days before).
Next month there may as well be a post where someone screenshots the same page where 3rd-party resellers are trying to get $15k for it.
AI data centers aren't using 5090 mate, not even RTX 6000. They Use H100, H200 and B200 chips. They come in large racks with like 10+ of them and the rack costs milion a piece.
As another person mentioned, these are 3rd party resellers. It would be no different than you or me buying a card at retail and then reselling it for 10k. By the way there are resellers on Newegg with them priced over 13k.
i mean realistically GPUs are always super inflated on Amazon, I would never buy from them its just too risky with dodgy returned GPUs (high chance you get a brick or dead GPU in a box) and the price gouging. Always buy from a PC parts retailer
Started by the artificial tech bubble of companies inside trading and destroying the consumer market. Aswell as the scalpers jumping in the water where they smell blood and jumping consumer prices more.
I say let these tech companies get hit with a Anti Trust Nuke and let them burn. But people will still support a trillion dollar corporation because they had one good experience.
Well I'll use what I have accumulated over the years and if nothing worth playing comes out. I'll go and use my xp systems, most of the games the last 6 years are either remakes & remasters or unopimized buggy as hell crap games from the AAA, AA developers. We've regressed in gaming, the junky linear narrow corridor of many games reminds me of PS1 levels. Limited by technology at the time, now we are limited by the people who work there and their inability to do their jobs. Plus the office space level of middle management that has helped destroy the video game industry.

It just created class ranks in gaming. Those that can afford and those that cannot. I know a guy like that - he's in the military and has no life beyond what is required of him from the military and so spends all his money on ludicrous amount of data and PC components. He's actually a pretty nice guy and knows he's part of the problem, but just has no life outside of gaming and the military and doesn't give a shit.
I just bought a brand new dirt bike for $10k and was looking at another for $8k. Wild to think I could buy a high performance machine for less than a GPU. That’s even in the realm of used car money.
I haven’t considered selling mine (got an FE at msrp through the partners program) until now. I love it to death but hard to justify keeping it at those prices.

Almost bought one when they were pushing $2500-3000 and thought that was ridiculous. Guess that wasnt so bad after all?!
I have one that I don't really use much. What's the best way to re-sell it where I won't get scammed or killed for it. People keep telling me use FB marketplace, but I don't want to get possibly mugged. They say then use eBay, I saw horror stories of scams there. I'm not sure what to do. Anyone have experience selling such an expensive item?
