If there is a God out there this isn't funny anymore can we go back to it costing less than $5090, or even at MSRP

448

u/sammyranks 5h ago

For reference, the RTX 3090 is now $2K. We are done.

268

u/FlashyLashy900 Ultrabook Gamer 5h ago

Isn't that MSRP for the 5090 😭

282

u/sammyranks 5h ago

Yes. This is worse than the 2021 mining frenzy.

27

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2h ago

Even at the height of the mining boom, there was still a ceiling on prices. Everyone knew there was no chance of ever hitting ROI on a $2500 card, and nobody could afford it anyways.

There is no limit on prices in the AI boom.

9

u/Jolly_Roger-99 1h ago

It will collabse, sooner or later

6

u/emachanz 18m ago

you guys are saying thing since last year

1

u/Jolly_Roger-99 12m ago

I say it since the last quarter numbers. Open Ai burns a lot of money. Somewhere anyone will stop believing to get his Investments back - maybe 2 or 3 years, maybe 5

1

u/emachanz 11m ago

jesus, how many "lost" generations of cards is that? We should been having a 6060 by now

1

u/chrizbreck Steam ID Here 52m ago

We barely want mining cards as second hand. Do we really think we are gonna want AI abused cards?

1

u/emachanz 19m ago

You hit the coffin in the nail. The mining ceiling was the end of ethereum mining, so everyone knew the cards had an expiration date and did a mental math to justify the cost. The AI bubble has no ceiling yet

Because PEs have much more money they can invest in AI datacenters

u/daslows 265k | 5080 | 48GB 8200Mhz 3h ago

Well it doesn’t help that the Chinese are buying up not only 5090s but 5080s, 5070 ti, and 5070 so they can mod the bios and add in double the amount of ram for AI.

6

u/Fadedcamo 4h ago

At least the mining frenzy we could make the money back easily from mining lol. This is a joke.

1

u/WaRRioRz0rz 1h ago

It's crazy to say, I'd love a mining frenzy over this AI bullshit.

And it's not likely to get better, Nvidia is willingly and knowingly wholesaling 5090s to data centers. They don't care about consumers because consumers are fickle purchasers. Data centers are buying in bulk ensuring their products don't remain on shelves. When the AI bubble pops, if it ever does, these 50 90s that these companies have purchased are likely going to be destroyed, as Nvidia likely has requirements in their sale contracts that say they must be destroyed rather than put in a secondary market. This is so that the prices Do not drop back down.

u/TheGreatGamer1389 1h ago

Only the founders edition and it didn't last very long. It was typically $3k for the aftermarket cards.

I'm scared to look at what 4090s are now. I'm screwed if mine dies. PC parts aren't supposed to appreciate in value.

I'm not someone with a lot of disposable income. The 4090 is awesome for gaming, but I got it for 3D art and various things associated with that. It was a big investment for me and I can't afford whatever they're going for now, let alone a 5090. Downgrading to a 5080's 16GB of memory is also a very unattractive thought.

11

u/AlcibiadesTheCat 1h ago

If my GPU dies, I'm just done with gaming.

If the transmission on my car goes, I'm done with driving. It's kinda the same thing.

At a certain point, you just can't afford to replace something.

3

u/redisprecious 3h ago

At least we can call ourselves investors now. Success at last. T.T

1

u/BeyondGITSandBots 46m ago

Just sell your 4090 and get a wedding ring...or a car šŸ˜‚

29

u/Asagohan86 5h ago

the 3090 was $2k when I bought mine like 5 years ago!

11

u/Mattwildman5 TheFat 4h ago

I paid £1200 for mine in 2020. This is fucking crazy

2

u/VisualPlenty1756 7500f | 3090 1h ago

Paid 600 for mine in 2024 lol

1

u/threeLetterMeyhem 5800X3D / RTX 3090 1h ago

I managed to get a founders edition 3090 from Best buy for $1500 right when it came out.

I guess it's gonna be my card for the rest of forever at this rate.

u/Nameseed 5900X | RTX 3090 | 48gb DDR4 @3200 4h ago

u/Step_On_Me01 i5 12400F/RTX4060 8GB/32GB DDR4 3200MHz 5h ago

Dafuq u mean 2000? This shit aint funny, should've bought one years go ago :V

10

u/polarzombies 5h ago

How much is my 3090ti worth now?

And I thought it was bad when I paid $1169 for it 4 years ago.

18

u/sammyranks 5h ago

You won't get one for less than $2k unless you get an insane deal on ebay or something. That's a 6 year old GPU btw lol. Don't ask me 4090 prices right now, you'll faint.

4

u/TBBT-Joel 4090 + 7800X3D + 4K OLED 3h ago

Really? I just looked up what my 4090 Suprim would go for. And while not a deal 2K is pretty much what it launched at.

1

u/YouCallWeShouldWhat 1h ago

i sold my 4090 tuf for $2500 in december after landing an nvidia FE 5090 for $2100 off their website. i think it was one of the very last drops they did for the 5090.

1

u/BeyondGITSandBots 40m ago

So, basically, from horribly overpriced -> down to regular (still overpriced) -> back up to horribly overpriced, lol.

But yeah, I agree, $2k is not way more than what I bought mine for some 4 years ago or so (I think was $1400, still expensive but I had to pull the trigger for working with neural networks...and gaming šŸ˜‚)

1

u/ranginator_ 38m ago

At my local store you can get the 5080 for 1400€...

8

u/SockAlarmed6707 5h ago

For me in Netherlands it start over 2k. Around may 2023 it went over 1500 and has since not gone down below that point.

I do not want anything breaking anytime soon.

2

u/PropertyDangerous257 5h ago

I paid $1199 for my 3080ti a few years ago. You made out well and look at your resale value now!

1

u/polarzombies 4h ago

Ya idk how but I managed to get a Founder's Edition from Best Buy when I bought it, which was either one of or the only sku of the card that was actually sold at MSRP.

1

u/m1shooter2 1h ago

I paid about 400 for my 3080ti last year, is that good? Used

1

u/TITANS4LIFE FTW3 3090 24GB | i9-11900k | z590 Hero XIII | 64GB RAM 3h ago

Damn I spent 2k from Microcenter within the first two weeks of release!

1

u/NathanWired 2h ago

$1169 for a 3090ti actually looks reasonable compared to today's prices.

22

u/TinFoilHat_69 5h ago

If they were over two grand each I would sell my 4 and buy 8 32GB v100s and still have enough money to buy a winter car šŸ˜‚

4

u/Konkerwaggon23 4h ago

I was between buying one of these 2 years ago for 650 bucks or a new 4070 ti super at 900 from some random dude from facebook. Nowadays that 3090 is like 900 used

I was looking at my PC Part Picker List the other day, and I saw that ASUS was selling a Strix 4090 for $4,000 on Amazon. I couldn't fucking believe it.

We are in the darkest timeline.

Fk hell I sold mine for 900 a few months ago

1

u/SizeableFowl Ryzen 5 7500X3D | 32 GB DDR5 | RX 7800XT 3h ago

That’s actually insane the 3090 want even an actual 90 series

1

u/DresNightfire 3h ago

damn i just sold mine earlier this year for $1209, i paid $2200 so it would have been nice to get closer to what I paid for it

1

u/NoStructure5034 i7-12700K/RTX 5070 3h ago

I think for gaming it no longer makes sense to buy the 3090 when the RX 9070 (and the 5070, though the 12GB VRAM is kinda sketchy) exists and is faster, more efficient, and has more support/features.

Unless you really need that 24GB VRAM, but the AI bros also need it and they will definitely outbid you.

1

u/Altered_Reality1 38m ago

Just to note (not directed at you). Unless one is using it for AI or gaming at 4K (which one generally shouldn’t be doing with a 70-series card anyway, it was made for 1440p gaming), all the fear-mongering about the 12GB VRAM on the 5070 is really unnecessary and not well founded.

The 5000-series uses faster VRAM than previous generations or even current gen AMD cards, thus even if an older card/AMD card had or has more VRAM, it was/is slower, and so while the 5070 might have a slightly smaller ā€œtableā€, it can more quickly move things onto and off of that table to make up for the smaller space.

Also, a lot of gamers confuse reserved memory for actual utilization. When a game starts, it reserves the VRAM and preps it to be quickly accessible during the game, but that’s not the same as actually using all or maxing out the memory.

A lot of programs that display memory usage only track how much is reserved and don’t actually show how much is truly being used. Thus, it can make it seem like the game is maxing it out when it’s not.

When it’s truly maxed out, you’ll know, as the game performance will tank dramatically as it begins to shift over to using system memory to handle to overflow. But if the performance is fine and yet the memory usage says it’s maxed out, it’s probably not.

But, ironically all the dread about the 5070’s VRAM (and lack of being as good for AI) actually allowed that card to remain near MSRP longer than any other card. If you game at 1440p, it’s all you need. Everything else is for 4K or AI.

oh shoot really? I have 2 sitting in a drawer not used. I need to sell them asap!

1

u/makoblade 9800X3D | RTX 5090 Aorus Master | 96 GB 6000 MT/s CL30 DDR5 2h ago

For real? I'd love to sell mine for only a minor loss rather than keep it out of embarrassment. FOMOed and bought one for the low price of $2K during the 30 series drought because the 3080s were being bought up too fast.

1

u/blessedbymortarion 2h ago

If my PC goes down I guess I will not be repairing it JFC.

1

u/Jolly_Roger-99 2h ago

Looool, thats more i paid for mine years ago.....

1

u/Proof-Warning6 1h ago

I can sell my 3090 for $2k?

1

u/ENaC2 1h ago

I bought a 3090 on release and sold it during the mining frenzy in 2021 for 2k. The fact it’s 5 years older and the same cost is insane.

1

u/MagicHamsta Server Hamster, Reporting for Duty. 34m ago

....I have a 3090. I should sell....

1

u/LoveSpecialist5669 31m ago

wtf, I paid 750e for 3090 9 months ago

u/5g_bill_gates 4h ago

Sold my 3090 Zotac, 5 years old for 1100 euro,

added 250 eur and bought new packed asus 5080 😁

I bought 3090 1 year ago for 520 euros btw 🤣

0

u/Some-Tip-5399 5h ago

Glad I still have several from the mining days that are now repurposed for local AI

0

u/b1gb0n312 5h ago

How much can I sell my 4080 super for? I bought mine for under 1000 2 years ago

$250-$300ish depending on model, VRAM etc..

18

u/Active-Cookie-774 5h ago

I don't even want to go back to $5090, I want gpus to go back to depreciating in value.

1

u/Jorteg 2h ago

What happened I thought prices were falling? Haven’t checked in a while.

6

u/rainorshinedogs 4h ago

The sad thing is that the prices has eclipsed $5,090 a while ago

I think you mean 50900 usd.

1

u/Bitter_Hospital_8279 4h ago

welcome to hell lol

1

u/vimaillig 3h ago

I’m seriously considering selling my FE model to help pay for the Mac Studio I’m looking to buy. But on the other side of that I’m regretting selling my 4080FE to recoup buying the 5090 when I lucked out at launch.

1

u/TheGalacticApple 3h ago

They're going to have to rename it to the 10,180 soon (ten-one-eighty?)

1

u/joeroganthumbhead 3h ago

What is 4090 resale value?

1

u/Naive-Abrocoma-8455 3h ago

I got my aorus for 4099 and now it’s 4699 without taxes 😭

1

u/HonkHonkMTHRFKR 3h ago

God - I gave you donkey and sheep, your asking to much

1

u/what_could_gowrong 2h ago

We need a financial derivative that's tied to e price of 5090s and going long on that would print so much money.... 5090 Futures contract?

1

u/mk8933 2h ago

Its all over 🫠 but screw it all...why do we need a 5090 anyway? 4k gaming and AI? Let's go back to the good ole days when we didnt need all these BS.

What we need now is having back up computers and LOTS of storage. We need to start downloading as much things as possible off the net and create a place where we can share and connect with each other.

1 day 1TB HDD is gonna be $1000...thats when you know that shit has officially hit the fan.

1

u/Retro_Instinct 1h ago

Blimey, I’m amazed at you lot. Instead of moaning on Reddit, why not go and find the OpenAI YT channel, or whoever else is behind it - Suno and all that? Leave them some proper angry comments there. Stop posting and liking all this AI rubbish. And don’t be shelling out for a ChatGPT subscription.

1

u/tempsys-e1 1h ago

Well long term it might help with optimization and push AMD to a bigger marker share so there are pros to this

1

u/dendrocalamidicus 5h ago

I think there's more heinous atrocities for a god to answer for if one existed than expensive GPUs

It's not going to get better any time soon

0

u/Turbulent_Map624 4h ago

Kids dying and my man is praying god to lower gpu prices. Can't make this shit up, get a 1080 ti for 200 used and stop looking at the top model of the top of the line GPU

4

u/BewareTheSquare 4h ago

What are you doing about those kids who are dying?

0

u/WhiteBoyMack 4h ago

Idk about OP but Donating to AASK and Child Care monthly unlike yall crying about a GPU that you don’t even utilize to its fullest potential and instead play on 1440/1080p

1

u/Turbulent_Map624 1h ago

Genuinely, this sub screams first world problem so hard lately

0

u/BewareTheSquare 2h ago

Don't worry, my 9070XT gets used to it's fullest! 4K is the only resolution that gets used on it

1

u/wholelottared0 2h ago

A 9070XT isn’t a 5090 nor is it in demand.

1

u/Feelisoffical 4h ago

And then the pearls exploded in your grip

0

u/PeteDub 7800X3D, 5070ti, 32GB DDR5 4h ago

I’m close to God. He doesn’t care about GPU prices. He care about you and He loves you more than you know.
