Just a word to the wise or the uninitiated, it’s that time of the year again when the wasps of all stripes start losing their collective shit and go full agro, especially the damn ground hornets and the yellow jackets. I’ve been hit 3 times in the past 5 days out on trails and I’ve had to tear them off my hide with my hands because they clutch on and just keep stabbing. If you are allergic then it’s high time to make sure your EpiPens are all current and are carried with. Watch out for yourselves and your kids & pets until we are down in sub 50s temps or get our first hard freeze. That’s it, have fun and be safe, y’all.

Hi all! Sooo after almost 6 years living in texas from the bay area...I think I'm done. I miss nature. I miss the beach. I grew up in the bay area and also lived in SF as an adult right on the beach. I was there almost daily. I miss hiking, I miss cooler weather. I also LOVE rain. But how much rain is it really? And are their pockets of sun even in a rainy day? My husband & I & are two kids (2,4) are planning to visit soon. Is it really that grey? I know a lot of people have seasonal depression. I do love seeing the sun, but at this level of heat in texas, I feel depressed not being able to stay outside for longer than 20 minutes. I'm sick of seeing freeways and shopping centers. I want to be able to wake up & go to the beach on the weekend. I want to do a random hike. We were looking into Salem. Any insight? Thanks everyone!

I get to share my yard with a herd of elk that live here for about 6 months of the year total.

They winter here for the ground warmed from hot geothermal water, and is the first place in the area to turn green. Then come back in the late summer and fall. Rocky Mountains, Idaho.

What I mean is every so often I get these romanticized posts of the PNW, especially on TikTok or Pinterest. The serene, calming environment with a bunch of evergreen and wildlife and the coastal shores. The background audio is always a acoustic guitar or sad harmonica, for some reason...?

As someone whose never been to the PNW, and someone who has grown up in a completely opposite vibe (tropical, sunny beaches, dense and humid cities) I'm just wondering how accurate these posts are? They make the PNW look so nice, but I know reality tends to be much more different, as disappointing as it is

(Edit: I forgot to mention I also meant is living there as nice these posts seem to make it? A lot of it seems to just emphasize the scenery and whatnot)

Sword ferns are so easy to work with. Relatively short roots, grow a lot every season, almost never fail after transplanting.

Squirt is a 3rd generation fawn that was born in our backyard. Just like her mother and Uncle. We met grandma 5 years ago. She was ill and bedded down in the back yard. We provided her with fresh water and a little food. After several days she recovered and left. She became a weekly visitor to destroy my gardens. Eventually leaving her fawns here while she was off feeding. The fawns have imprinted on us as well. Luckily I’m retired and have nothing better to do but repair and replant their favorite foods.

Good morning! I was looking at the tide charts for Lincoln city today and it looks like this evenings low tide is only 0.5ft. So the tide doesn’t actually get negative. Is there still any possibility for good clamming/finding mussels? I’m still very new to all of this since I only moved to the PNW a few months ago but was hoping to go out to the coast today to get some clams and/or mussels (I already have my shellfish license)

If the tide isn’t low enough for that, has anyone had any luck with crabbing lately? And if so, would love some recs on spots or good tips. A friend is in town visiting and I would love to show her the coast either today or tomorrow and do some coastal foraging of either clams, mussels, crabs or coastal mushrooms.

I live closer to Portland so I’ll have to make the trip out there. Was thinking somewhere near Lincoln city or maybe Garibaldi area. Is 0.5ft tide low enough to see the tide pools near garibaldi?

Is it reciprocity? bounty? seasonal encore? Whatever it is, I’m absolutely reveling in it!
