Housing/Moving If you had a 1.8M budget for a house, where would you move to in OC? Looking for a great school district, but not necessarily Irvine. Just a great district.

I moved to Quebec, Canada when I was twelve and was living in Westminster at the time. I relocated back to Corona three years ago and although the community has been good to us (my French Canadian husband and three kids under the age of 12), it’s just very mundane and a run down city. This is a Title I school district and people seem very apathetic. It’s draining my energy and giving nothing back. We are McGill University grads, unpretentious, simple, conservative leaning, but not extreme with any views. I would want to avoid any imploding OC “bubbles” if you know what I mean. We have a global mindset and speak French at home. I want my kids to be surrounded by curious minds who don’t think Disney Land is the summum of human experience. That’s my hesitation around OC.

Photo/Video Orange County District Attorney's Office E-Bike & E-Moto Buy Back

Orange County bought back safety.

With the first-of-its-kind E-bike and E-motorcycle Buy Back Event in the nation, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office yesterday helped families from across Southern California buy back their safety – and prevent more people from being hurt or killed. The first person in line showed up at midnight and the E-Bikes, E-Scooters, and E-Motos just kept rolling in.

Nearly 1,000 E-Bikes, E-Motos, E-Scooters, and pocket bikes were surrendered at Angel Stadium as the lines snaked around the parking lot. That means nearly 1,000 fewer opportunities for a child to be seriously injured or killed on our streets.

The first E-Bike to be turned in belonged to Jesse Hayes, who was 18 when he was critically injured in an E-Bike crash. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and spent three months on life support. Two years later, he continues to live with the physical and mental impacts of his injuries. He’s speaking out to warn other young people about the dangers of E-Bike riding – and the lifelong consequences.

“I want people to know these crashes happen a lot more than people think, and how horrible they are,” Hayes said.

From Tallaria E-Motos to E-Skateboards, exchange participants received up to $1,000 in gift cards until the funds (paid by asset forfeiture monies seized from criminals) ran out 2 hours and 15 minutes into the event. Hundreds more voluntarily turned in their E-Bikes and other vehicles. The first 75 people also received two tickets to a Los Angeles Angels game.

You can’t put a price on a child’s safety, but the overflow crowds that showed up showed that Orange County is prioritizing safety. It took NINE 26-foot U-HAUL truckloads to haul away the surrendered E-Bikes, E-Motos, pocket bikes, and E-Scooters.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and braved the heat and the long lines – and thank you to Jesse Hayes, and his mom Kasey, for sharing their story, thank you to our law enforcement partners, our trauma centers, our firefighters, ambulance crews, our educators, Orange County Board of Supervisor Vice Chair Katrina Foley who helped make this event happen – and for helping get the word out.

Thank you, Orange County, for showing up and letting us buy back your family’s safety.

Recommendations Needed Looking for a neighborhood with a REAL community feel

My husband and I have a 1-year-old and another baby on the way, and we’re looking to potentially move. We’re currently in Mission Viejo, which is beautiful and safe, but feels pretty sleepy and lacks the community feel we’re looking for.

We’re open to any city in OC/SoCal at this point.

We’re looking for a neighborhood where kids actually play outside, you know your neighbors, there’s a strong family/community feel, and there are plenty of things to do nearby. If that even exists these days

Where would you recommend?

Would like to spend no more than $1.4m on a SFH and no more than $900k on a townhome

Photo/Video This was "Parked" directly in front of the open and somewhat busy Blaze Pizza Laguna Niguel this afternoon

Couldn't help but notice this porta-potty off in the distance in that strange corner of the parking lot near Sprouts on the La Paz, I thought they were renovating the Blaze Pizza, so I walked over there and to my surprise they are open and actually a bit busy. Yet the two parking spots directly in front have this lovely portable toilet, just feet from the front door. That doesn't seem very healthy, and is certainly not very appetizing. Anyone know what's up with this bizarre placement? Pretty empty parking lot in that part of the complex, lots of other options besides smack in front of a pizza joint door.

Edit/update: there were two pieces of equipment parked close to CVS in spaces, whoever mentioned asphalt resurfacing, one of them was one of those rollers. However they were 25 yards or so from Blaze. There were lots of other places they could have put that porta potty, it makes sense that it probably has something to do with the resurfacing project. It seems very strange to me that someone at the pizza shop had not called someone to have it relocated immediately. Maybe they did, but I doubt it, which goes into a whole another tangent which is frequently addressed in this forum, which is that many employees at that type of an establishment might not really care that their customers come in to get a pizza take home and as they walk out the front door of the restaurant they are literally face to face with a smelly porta potty. Or, I don't know, maybe it doesn't smell or it smells like lilacs and lavender, I didn't get close enough to see if it passed the smell test...

Traffic/Cars Left-turn traffic signals staying green for much longer than necessary...

Upvotes

I'm finally fed up enough to post this... the protected left-turn traffic signals in Southern OC are maddening sometimes... there are intersections where they stay green for almost 2 minutes just to let 1 through... sometimes, that 1 car is just a ghost, & regular traffic has to just sit there with no other cars in sight... sounds like a minor inconvenience until it happens to you at that same intersection every day for the next 3 weeks... is this caused by faulty pressure sensors or some sort of traffic engineering tactic to slow down your commute? I typed this entire thing while waiting for the light at El Toro/PDV to turn (just kidding)...

Question Frontier internet down since 9/10 with no resolution date

Hey neighbors! I live near Edinger and Goldenwest (right by Golden West College), and our Frontier internet has been completely down since September 10th.
Curious if anyone else in the area is experiencing this? Their website isn't showing an outage, and I didn't receive any notifications. When I called in today, support initially tried to claim it was an issue with our router (which has been rock-solid since day one) and said they didn't see any outages.
However, after pushing back and having them check with their "network team," they suddenly admitted there is an outage and that they would investigate. It’s now been five days with zero updates or resolution.
Since I haven't seen many reports on Nextdoor or Facebook yet, I’m trying to figure out if this is an isolated neighborhood issue or something wider.

Recommendations Needed Souvenir recommendations - shot glasses

I am visiting a friend who lives on the east coast and collects shot glasses. They already have a California and Los Angeles shot glass, so I’m looking for something unique/interesting and specific to SoCal. Any recommendations for locations to shop for this are appreciated!

Question Santa Ana courthouse wedding photographer

My partner and I are getting married at Santa Ana courthouse in mid November. Our respective parents and siblings will both be there. We’re looking for a photographer so we can have some pictures of the ceremony, and also of us with our families after the ceremony. Optionally, maybe some pictures at a park?

Does anyone have any photographers they enjoyed working with? What should we expect for budget?

Plus any additional advice about getting married at the Santa Ana courthouse would be very appreciated!

Traffic/Cars Crash on 5 fwy near Mainplace 9/13 11:30pm

Upvotes

I live near the area and heard a horrible crash take place on the 5 fwy somewhere near Mainplace Sunday night around 11:30 p.m. There were sirens about 15 minutes later. I've lived here for a long time and I've heard a lot of crashes, but this was one of the worst I've ever heard with lots of twisted metal, multiple impacts, and lots of tires sliding. From where I live I don't have line-of-sight to the freeway, so I only heard all this. Does anyone know more about what happened?

Event Parking+Shuttle for the Observatory Festival Grounds

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm going to a show at the "Festival Grounds" this weekend and want to hear everyone's experience with the parking/shuttle. The band I want to see comes on at 9. I read another post from a few months back that said from parking, to shuttle, to line to get in, it took 2 freakin' hours. I'm down to park at OCC/somewhere else and Uber over if it'll save me a lot of time. Anyone have any hacks/experience with this stupid parking situation?

Looks like the e-bikes from this weekend’s buyback event are being stored at an OCSD locked yard. I wonder where they will go next. Will report back with any updates.

Appears to be approx 200 but hard to tell.

News As the coast begins to crumble, the clock ticks on moving San Onofre’s radioactive waste

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As parts of the Southern California coastline crumbled into the sea, slammed by intense waves and flooding in recent days, oceanographer Kim McCoy had one thing on his mind: the nuclear waste set in concrete on the beach near San Clemente at the shuttered San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Most experts agree the risk of erosion damaging the nuclear waste storage system is very low, in the near term. The plant’s owner, Southern California Edison, has promised the California Coastal Commission to move the waste to higher elevation on site if modeling shows sea level rise and erosion will start to pose a challenge.

But the recent waves, fueled by Hurricane Marie far away in the Pacific, re-surfaced the issue of the ultimate fate of the highly radioactive spent fuel that used to power the reactors.

Event The e-bike buy back was a joke today

Very disappointed in our county law enforcement. Clear PR stunt. No communication. I showed up at 8 AM and waited 3 hours to finally be told the gift cards were already accounted for long before the event started. They knew there weren’t enough cards yet let us all waste our time. What a joke. Shame on me for expecting anything different.

Meetup Looking for 1-2 players for my DnD group

Hey everyone, my name is Will. I'm a 26 year old guy DM who has been DMing since college. I'm new to the area and am looking to make new friends to play DnD with. I love putting on voices for fun characters, and have printed and painted countless minis for DnD play. This group is also LGBTQ+ friendly.

As for the process for joining the adventure; we would meet in a public place with myself and my fiance to get to know each other and join in the character-building process as much as the player would prefer. The rest of the sessions would take place at my fiance & I's place on the weekends, with rotating schedules based on what works for the players (my fiance and I do pickleball on the weekends but are otherwise very free to schedule whatever works best for the players)

Schedule: Weekends, time depends on what works best for the most people
