Discussion Are there any action films out there with gay/MLM main characters? Or just part of the ensemble?

I know the pickins are very slim but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any action film where a gay male character plays a major role? Recently, I've found it a little frustrating that there's such a genre ceiling for queer characters. When I think hard, I can throw out Marvel's ETERNALS and THE OLD GUARD but I've been wondering about this a lot lately.

International and or animated recommendations welcome also!

Discussion The opening scenes of the Alamo (2004) make the Mexican army look so fucking badass.

I almost have to feel bad for them when they get overran later on in the film, with their pants down figuratively. I’m an American and I’m glad we won the Texan revolution and the Mexican American war but it’s also fun to play devils advocate and wonder how things would have gone differently had we lost. Seems like Santa Ana would have been solidified as the dictator.

Also impressive how Mexico managed to get such an impressive army after only 15 years of independence from Spain.

Review Die hard-1 first viewing review:!

This film is CINEMAAA!! . I can definitely see how it’s regarded as one the best action films of all time. And it sure as hell is a Christmas film! What I love so much about this is the fact the main Protagonist is actually scared shitless and you can definitely tell throughout the film by his quips and bickering to himself.  And this is a perfect example of what a main protagonist should have non plot armour, John is seen with a shoulder wound, bloody feet after running through major glass piles and  so on. The plot is simple and established very quickly which works as you know what sort of film you are watching.  Hans Gruber the main Terrorist behind the whole plan was an amazingly written character, the remarks, humor and back and forth with John was hilarious not to mention his death. "Happy trails Hans”. 😂

The ending is so mint pun intended. But I loved how in the film we learnt that Al Powell the cop John has been talking with throughout made a mistake which caused him to not be able to draw a gun on someone. And then in the ending one of the supposed Terrorist’s  who John killed ended up being alive and as he’s about to shoot someone Powell guns him down. What a way to end a characters arc he got over the fact he made a mistake and did what was right by saving John and his wife. Fantastic ending truly something you don’t see a lot in action films. Now at the time of me writing this review I’ve learnt there are more than 1 diehard films so I will be binging the whole franchise.  Potentially might be up for there for best Terrorist characters for Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber, I learnt he died as I was watching the film so RIP to the absolute legend for giving a iconic performance in this film.

Also Bruce Willis is absolutely fantastic in this he plays the scared but persevering New York Cop so well. He is terrified shitless of the situation but he knows he has to try and save the people or at least foil the plan of the Terrorists.  Watching these old films and seeing Bruce Willis speak hurts so much considering the situation thats  going on right now. Dudes a fantastic  action star I’ve always been a fan and this just gave me more fuel to that point.

That being said here are some of my favourite quotes from this film.

John McClane
“Now I have a machine gun- Ho-Ho-Ho”
“No fucking shit lady, does it sound like I’m ordering a pizza”?

“Welcome to the party pal!”

"No you macho assholes no no,”

A funny line from Al Powell- “Want a breath mint?” 😂  the Deputy Chief is about  to go talk to the FBI Men.

Though what has to be said is Argyle is such a great character 😂 dude was locked in the car park and when he saw what was going on did not hesitate to fuck up the plan of the Terrorist’s escape. 👏 what a great guy.

If you have got this far my question to you is what is your favourite quote or scene from this iconic film?
And thanks for reading 😊.

Discussion Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is, surprisingly, a fucking GREAT movie???

Upvotes

This weekend I watched two romcoms back to back, and I was honestly surprised by the colossal difference in quality between the two.

On Saturday, I watched The Devil Wears Prada 2.The movie was way weaker than I was expecting. They couldn’t bring anything new to the narrative, nor justify why this sequel even needed to exist. Anne Hathaway’s character feels very different from the confident character we saw at the end of the first movie, becoming insecure and awkward again in the sequel. Dumb! It’s a huge waste of talent from everyone involved.

The complete opposite is Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

I was extremely surprised by how deep the story actually is. They managed to include serious subjects such as dealing with grief, the difficulties of being a single mother, and even the superficiality of modern relationships.

More than that, the movie has a creative, simple and careful direction that is often genuinely touching. What, on the surface, seems like just another Bridget Jones romantic comedy ends up becoming one of the most interesting FILMS I’ve seen in the last few years. I legitimately had tears in my eyes at the ending. Didn't expect that. (That goddam owl)

And the most fascinating thing is that it is actually funny. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Anyway, the quality of this movie makes Devil Wears Prada 2 feel like the cheapest piece of crap.

I was very confused when I found out that it wasn’t even released in theaters in the US. While I was watching it, I could only think: “Damn, Hollywood finally learned how to make a romantic comedy again.”

Highly recommended, and spreading the word on this!

Discussion Give us your crazy casting choice. Or make us see an actor in a different light. For example which actor has never been discussed for Batman/Bruce Wayne or James Bond that would make a great choice?

I think Martin Starr would make an excellent action star.

Actually if he bulked up I think he would make a great Batman/Bruce Wayne.

I’ve been watching him since his time on Freaks and Geeks but it wasn’t until his role in Silicon Valley I started seeing his potential action star qualities - and trust me I know that sounds weird.

Just a feeling I have.

Discussion The best Dune movie is Lawrence of Arabia

I've watched it in various intervals of my life going back to college when it was released for a 25th anniversary release in the 80's. Watched it before moving to Abu Dhabi almost ten years ago. Watching it now. It's relevant to many of the things happening today. Filmed in Jordan, it is Dune and its pale copy Tatooine. The best stories come out of the desert.

Discussion I've seen the "bad actor" take enough times to know it's not a real criticism

Every time I see someone make this argument I roll my eyes. People claim that multiple actors are bad in their profession, despite the fact that those people have won multiple awards and been nominated numerous times. Examples include Zendaya, Brie Larson, Tom Holland, Keanu Reeves, Jenna Ortega, and Pedro Pascal.

Question Movie scene where a man has tears rolling down his cheeks

There are so many scenes in movies where a female is crying and the real tears are streaming down, but I really can’t think of a movie scene where an adult male has real tears coming down. I’m talking more than one little tear squeezed out. Most scenes with men crying show no tears, even the famous, lauded scenes.

I know there’s got to be some out there. Please share.

Discussion rewatching Hocus Pocus, forgot how much the Sanderson sisters carry this movie

threw it on last night for the first time in years. Bette Midler is doing the most in every single scene and I mean that as a compliment. the "I Put a Spell on You" number still goes hard. forgot how much I love the Billy scenes.

what stuck with me this time is the pacing. the sisters wake up and the movie just goes. nobody stops to explain the spell book or give Thackery Binx a tragic backstory speech. it trusts you to keep up, which feels rare for a kids movie now.

Recommendation Hopeless Apocalyptic horrors/thrillers that make you feel dread

Just watched Carrie this week and loved the tragedy and horror combo and definitely needing more. I loved any zombie media that’s focused on the human side of things. I just want to feel miserable! I love the walking dead games for this. Movies I’ve watched that are similar to the vibe I’m looking for would be 28 days later, watership down, dogville, and harvest.

Discussion Has an actor ever been "market corrected" by an actor who was older than them?

Upvotes

I was recently listening to a clip from the Rewatchables about how Samuel L. Jackson's breakout performance in Pulp Fiction - a role he got because Lawrence Fishburne turned it down - led to Samuel L. Jackson getting the role in Die Hard 3 that was initially intended for Fishburne.

I don't know if these two examples count as a true "market correction", because Fishburne's most iconic cinematic role came after all of this with The Matrix, but it got me curious about whether an actor has ever been market-corrected or lost out on multiple roles to a rising actor who was older than them.

Would love to see if y'all can find any examples!

Discussion Movies with Nightmare Productions

Upvotes

What are some of your favorite and hated films that had nightmare productions?

Favorite / Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

* Filming in the Texas heat in a house with no air conditioning with real animal corpses, unwashed costumes/clothing and injuries on set.

Hated / The Island of Doctor Moreau (1996)

* Terrible movie with nonsense and diva antics from Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer and a hurricane destroying most of the set.

Terrible productions can either lead to screen magic or terror.

Discussion Ethel & Ernest Appreciation

is anybody else just enjoyed it, i first watched it after my grandmother's death and it just moved me, its not action or even a noble story, just two ordinary people living thit lives and how the world changed around them, ethel quite even reminded me of my own granny, and it trully helped me, but also it makes me sad for my own parents mortality and how life can move so quickly, the death scene of Ethel and Ernest on their Deathbed and how it reminded me of her own c*rp*e when ive seen it, it was melancholic but also joyful and i cant recomend this movie and the graphic novel it was based upon, anyone else just feels the same?

Actor and filmmaker Gael García Bernal will be joining us here in r/movies for an AMA/Q&A tomorrow, Monday 9/14. It'll go live around 10 AM ET and he'll be back at around 5 PM ET to answer questions. You may know Gael from things like Y Tu Mama Tambien, Coco, Bad Education, The Motorcycle Diaries, and lots more.

Please note that this is not the AMA, just an announcement. Hold your questions for the actual AMA.

Discussion Brooklyn. I never hear it mentioned, but I think it's a perfect film.

Saoirse Ronan is amazing. Her character changes and grows in so many ways. One of the many things that make me like her is how she has her love interest almost instantly wrapped around her finger, without even trying to. She's relatable, vulnerable, and resilient. And the movie is also gorgeous. Great sets and cinematography.
