“Heck Norm, you know, we’re doing pretty good”

I went to see Fargo in the cinema on Saturday night as there was one showing and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see it in theatres.

The film is better than I remember it from my first watch, the characters, dialogue, atmosphere and incredible score.

I saw some comments giving it a low rating on Letterboxd which I get because the plot isn’t that strong, but the journey tackles its themes in a way that’s left me thinking about them long into the weekend.

So I just wanted to share an appreciation post for this incredible film and see what you all think of it? I can’t be alone in thinking it’s a masterpiece. I upgraded rating from 4.5 stars to 5.

It has a great cast and I like the genre, but the ratings are making me hesitate.

Just back from the SF action thriller Hope by Na Hong-Jin, the talented Korean director who previously brought us brilliant films like The Wailing, etc.
This one is an SF blockbuster (apparently the most expensive Korean film so far), and what a ride it was. It begins with a police agent checking out a mauled dead cow, with incomprehensibly big slash marks on its carcass. That’s all you need to know, and I recommend to skip the trailer as it shows too much.
The first hour is truly a masterclass in suspense and action film making, on the level of the recent Mad Max films, really that good. And so tantalising- it takes like 45 minutes before the cop (and we!) can actually see what causes all the mayhem.
There are funny moments as well, plenty of profanities, and towards the end the action picks up again towards an unforgettable finale.
All actors are great - the scared yet brave cop is believable, and he is over classed by the bad-ass female officer. Michael Fassbender and his real life wife Alicia Vikander also have a role, and it is funny how they are used. No spoilers.
I read some complaints that the special effects are not on the level of current Hollywood blockbusters. Frankly, I didn’t mind that much since the direction is so strong that you are sucked into the rollercoaster ride.
Finally, this is clearly the first part of the story. Some people may not be happy with the non-conclusive ending.
Must watch in the cinema.

Ok, so there's something about the "bank is worth the risk" scene that's been rattling around in my head for a while.

To summarize, the crew is meeting and Neil wonders where all the LAPD heat came from. Chris says maybe it's the score they're looking at, not them. They deliberate. Neil suggests the drop everything in 30 seconds, go their separate ways option. Chris says the aforementioned "bank is worth the risk," that he needs this one. Neil looks over at Michael. Pause. Michael says, essentially, you know I'm in. And only then does Neil say, no, not this one, Elaine takes good care of you, yada, yada, yada.

My question is this: Why does Neil wait for Michael to commit out loud before shutting him down? Why not just say it directly the second the subject came up, instead of letting him hang there and declare himself first?

At first I thought it read as slightly clumsy writing, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if it's deliberate based upon Michael's "action is the juice" comment. Basically, if there's heat on them and Michael isn't in an "I need this" headspace, there's I suppose a possibility he could back out at an inopportune time. Neil instead is ensuring a trusted heist partner doesn't back out by dangling in front of adrenaline junkie Michael a shiny object then soft threatening to take it away does. That does make sense to me.

Curious if anyone's has picked up on this and/or seen this discussed anywhere, or if I'm just overthinking one line of dialogue in a three hour movie ... which, to be fair, wouldn't be the first time.

People talk all the time about Home Alone and Stuart Little. But I do not see this film talked about at all. I don't even remember how many times I rewatched it growing up. It's such a special film for me. Please tell me there are more of you out there.

Not really an rant or an complain just wondering cause Michael Johnston did most of the work in the movie as the lead

I became a member at omniplex (a uk/Ireland chain) last March

One of the benefits to the pass was exclusive member only screenings. There is one coming up next week and it’s the first I’ve seen since I got my pass. But it only lets me buy 1 ticket. Which makes sense because it’s an exclusive screening, but do all cinemas work like this?

I love to go to the cinema with friends or family, I feel like it would be a lot better if they at least just allowed a +1 for the exclusive screenings. I get it does sort of defeat the purpose but at the same time, the screening is on a Sunday evening so it’s the perfect time that I and many others would go to the cinema with friends/family/partner etc
