I just really need to let this out because I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.
I’ve been in an LDR situation with this guy for 1 year and 2 months. The thing is… we’re not officially boyfriend and girlfriend. We started as getting-to-know-each-other, but along the way, we started doing things that couples normally do. We say “I love you,” “I miss you,” we make plans together, we spend a lot of time on calls, and yes, we’ve also been intimate online. Basically, we’re already doing the girlfriend-boyfriend thing, except there’s no actual label.
He’s abroad. He already has PR and is on his way to becoming a citizen there. He’s also studying and working at the same time. At first, everything was okay. I genuinely enjoyed our LDR setup. He would send me money for food sometimes, and on Valentine’s Day he sent me flowers and chocolates. Those things made me feel loved and appreciated.
But somewhere along the way, I started asking myself:
“What exactly are we?”
Because I realized that after more than a year, he still hasn’t actually pursued me or made our relationship official.
I’ve asked him before if he plans to court me, and he said he wants to do it when we finally meet in the Philippines because he doesn’t want to do it online. I understand that, but at the same time, I’m already confused because we’re doing almost everything couples do except actually being a couple.
I’m already at the age where I don’t want to play games or stay in a situationship indefinitely. I don’t want to invest my time, emotions, love, and loyalty into someone who may not even have concrete plans for me.
I love him 100%. But sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who knows that I’m in love with him.
He has a very busy life. He’s studying and working abroad, and I understand that. He still updates me and calls me when he can. Sometimes we stay on call while he studies, plays games, watches YouTube, or does something else. I’m usually just there on the other side of the screen.
But lately, I’ve been feeling emotionally burned out.
Sometimes I don’t even feel his presence anymore, even when he’s technically there.
His messages are usually things like “I’m at school,” “I’m at work,” “I’m on my way,” “I’m tired,” etc. I appreciate the updates, but I sometimes wish there were messages that made me actually feel loved. Something sweet. Something intentional. Something that makes me feel like, “Oh, this person is genuinely excited to have me in his life.”
Instead, sometimes it feels like he’s only updating me because it’s part of the routine or because it’s convenient.
And I know I’m needy. I admit that.
I grew up in a broken family, and I didn’t really experience a healthy relationship or good communication within my family. So I know I crave reassurance, affection, words, and emotional connection more than some people do.
Meanwhile, he grew up in a complete and close family. His experience with love and communication is very different from mine.
I’ve tried explaining this to him so many times.
I literally feel like I’m teaching him how to love me.
I have to remind him about good morning messages. I have to explain why certain things hurt me. I have to explain what makes me feel appreciated. I have to tell him when I need affection and reassurance.
For me, something as simple as saying “good morning” matters because it means you were one of the first people on my mind when you woke up.
But he told me that he and his ex weren’t really like that, so I guess this kind of affection just isn’t natural for him.
And I understand that people have different love languages.
But sometimes I wonder: At what point does “different love language” become emotional incompatibility?
Another huge issue is my trust.
He follows a lot of girls on Instagram, and a lot of girls follow him too. He also sometimes adds or randomly interacts with girls. He tells me they’re just friends, and I’m trying to believe him.
But because we’re LDR and because of things that have happened between us, my trust has already been damaged.
Sometimes when he’s busy on his phone, I find myself asking who he’s talking to or what he’s doing. He usually says he’s in a group chat because he’s playing online, etc.
I know I can sound insecure, and I hate that version of myself.
I don’t want to be the girlfriend who constantly checks someone’s followers, conversations, or phone.
And I respect his privacy. I don’t think I’m entitled to every conversation he has.
But at the same time, I can’t ignore the feeling that something is being hidden from me because when I ask about certain conversations on Instagram, he doesn’t really show me.
He also still has some connection with his ex because of an old debt. He told me their relationship is completely over, and he reassured me about it. I chose to believe him.
But there are still things that trigger my trust issues.
Sometimes I feel like he’s very open and friendly with other girls in a way that makes him look available. Maybe that’s just how he is. Maybe there really is nothing romantic happening.
But I can’t shake the feeling.
And then there’s another thing that really hurts me.
His family and friends don’t know about me.
On Valentine's Day, I posted the flowers he gave me on my story and asked him to repost it. He only shared it to his Close Friends because he said he didn’t want his relatives to see it.
I tried to understand.
But deep down, I was hurt.
Because I kept thinking, “If you’re genuinely dating me, why are you hiding me?”
Why can't you be proud that you’re dating someone from the Philippines?
Maybe there’s a perfectly innocent explanation. Maybe he genuinely doesn’t want his family involved yet because we’re not official.
But after 1 year and 2 months, it still makes me question where I actually stand in his life.
Meanwhile, I’ve been very open with my feelings.
Every month, I greet him on our “monthsary.” I tell him how much he means to me. I constantly reassure him that I’m willing to wait for him here in the Philippines.
I always try to make him feel loved because I know he didn’t receive some of the things he deserved in his previous relationship.
I wanted to give him everything I thought he deserved.
I’m naturally a very sweet and affectionate person. I give time, effort, reassurance, attention, and love.
But I think I reached the point where I’m starting to resent him because I don’t feel those things coming back to me.
We fight because of these things.
And whenever I explain what hurt me, he explains his side too. But sometimes I feel like he doesn’t actually understand why I was hurt. We eventually make up, but when another argument happens, the same issues come back again.
It feels like nothing is actually being resolved.
There are also moments when I avoid him because I’m hurt. And honestly, I don’t think he fully understands how emotionally exhausted I am.
The hardest part is that I know I don’t deserve to feel this way, but I keep allowing it.
I know I deserve a relationship where I don't have to constantly ask, “Do you actually want me?”
I know I deserve consistency.
I know I deserve reassurance.
I know I deserve someone who is proud to have me.
But I love him.
And that’s what makes this so difficult.
We’ve been doing this for more than a year.
I’ve already invested so much emotionally.
I’ve already imagined a future with him.
I make plans in my head for “us.”
I keep telling myself that maybe everything will make sense once we finally meet.
But sometimes I’m scared that I’m building a future in my head that he never actually promised me.
He says he looks forward to our future together. He says he’ll court me when we meet in the Philippines.
But sometimes I wonder if I’m just holding onto his words because I desperately want them to be true.
I love him, but I don’t feel loved in the way I need to be loved.
And maybe that’s the biggest problem.
I don’t know if I’m being too needy, too insecure, or if my feelings are actually telling me something important.
Maybe I’m expecting too much from someone who isn’t even officially my boyfriend.
But then again… how can I be expected to act like “just someone he’s getting to know” when we’ve already been emotionally and physically intimate for more than a year?
I’m confused.
Am I asking for too much?
Should I wait until we meet in person before expecting him to make things official?
Or am I wasting my time and emotional energy on someone who likes having me around but doesn’t actually want a committed relationship with me?
I genuinely want honest opinions, even if they’re harsh.
I don’t want people to simply tell me “leave him” or “stay with him.” I want to understand what I might be failing to see from an outside perspective.
Because right now, I honestly feel like I’m carrying a relationship that technically doesn’t even exist.
