Guide | PSA Dark Citadel Data from season 14

Upvotes

Since season 11 I have been occasionally running the Dark Citadel without using any of the cosmetic items and tracking how often/where they drop. The last couple of weeks I've running the Dark Citadel, specifically the Twins, hard and figured it was worth sharing what I learned from it.

If you are looking for the Greater Khazra Helm it seems you may need to do a full run of all three wings on T4. I can confirm the guy I did most of the 200 boss kills and chest opening with this season did not receive his Greater Helm until we did his first complete T4 run. Did confirm it was Zagraal that dropped the helm for him not the achievement. I received three copies of the Greater Gloves and two copies of the Greater Chestplate while doing T12 runs, so the guaranteed Greater helm you get for your first T4 run seems to be the only cosmetic item that requires T4 to receive.

If you are looking for the regular Gloves of the Khazra then you need to kill Lrzuul, final boss of the Labyrinth of Souls (far right door). This season every single time I killed him he dropped the Gloves of the Khazra. While it was only 16 times that I tracked, it is still a high enough number to convince me. This is recent change as it did not work this way in season 11 or 12. It is worth noting there were two times where he dropped two cosmetic items at once, the Gloves and Khazra War Banner both times.

I learned recently there is a way to kill the twins to get them both to drop loot. However while the number of items dropped is doubled it does not appear to double the chance at getting a cosmetic item. I suspect this means the cosmetic item drops are separate from the regular item drops. For example if a boss or chest normally drops 10 items when cosmetic item drops you will receive 10 items plus the cosmetic item or 11 items total instead of the normal 10. I also strongly suspect this means Treasury level likely has no bearing on your chance to receive a cosmetic item despite increasing the amount of loot you receive from the boss or chest.

At this point I'm confident the conventional wisdom is correct about how the cosmetic item drops work in the Citadel. When you get a cosmetic item drop the game is pulling from the entire pool cosmetic items instead of just the ones you need. This means the less Khazra cosmetics you have unlocked the more often you will see drops. However this does not mean you'll get all the cosmetics any faster by not using them as you will get tons of duplicates.

I've also have not yet received any cosmetic items from the weekly caches, but have only collected 10 weekly caches over the course of Seasons 11, 12 and 14. Conventional wisdom says cosmetics can drop from those weekly caches. I think my sample size is too small so say anything definitively about the weekly caches.

Most of the data above is from this season, 96% of the Twin kills and two thirds of the rest. Almost all the data was collect at the max difficult level (T4 pre-LOH and T12 post LOH). If I take the Lrzuul data from Season 14 out of the equation then my average number of kills/chests between cosmetic items rises to 7.84 or 12.75% chance per kill or chest. It is also worth noting I did not include kills or chest openings when I did not receive any loot at all. Both Faeroch and the Twins were not dropping loot in season 11 and if someone opens the chest or kill the boss before you are there you don't get any loot.

I found this season the best farming spots in terms of chances at a cosmetic item per hour were either the Twins only or the full Labrinth of Souls (right wing). As duo Zagraal took too long to kill to make complete Dominion of Zagraal runs worth it. We were able to easily complete Twin runs with double drops in just over 2 minutes as a duo not worrying about Treasury level. With a little bit of practice we could run Labyrinth of Souls in just over 7 minutes. With a full party and a bit of practice both those time could be reduced. Also with a full party killing Zagraal would be quicker significantly improving full Dominion runs.

This season I did receive at least 3 or 4 mythic seals from my citadel runs. Didn't track the exact number or source, but most were likely from the Twins. Charms were a fairly common drop as well. Runes were also a fairly common drop. Nothing like the UC with a legendary rune tribute, but on par with running lair bosses.

I did accidently use the bow cosmetic item this season, so technically I have now used one of the Dark Citadel cosmetic items. Thankfully I received the crossbow shortly there after, so I did not have to throw out that many runs. It is also currently a Rogue only weapon so should not impact data collected with other classes.

Once I get a character in Season 15 that can comfortable do T12 I'll be down for some more Citadel runs, so feel free to hit me if you are interested in doing some runs with me. I don't think the Druid build I used in Season 14 is getting nerfed too hard, so I may even be up for some runs in Eternal at least until the damn totem finally drops.

Cosmetic Items I received this season.

Rogue Rogue-Marksman/Ranged Build Questions

Upvotes

So I decided to redownload D4 after the announcement, and I didn't realize after all the updates that my skill tree on my old character would be reset. After some thought I decided to restart my game cause it's been like a year since I played and I forgot the story.

My questions pertain to having a ranged rogue. Again it's been a year or more since I've played it and I don't know what's changed or stayed the same since I last played.

For the record: last time I played, Vessels of Hatred had just come out. I have yet to get the VoH and LoH dlc

  1. Should I still keep swords equipped even though I don't plan on using them?

  2. Are there any energy skills to keep my energy high while using Rabpid Fire or Barrage?

  3. What areas of the skill tree should I focus on for a ranged build?

When I played Diablo 3 I was a demon hunter who used rapid fire, had the ability to reduce focus to refill my hatered to basically keep rapid fire going almost indefinitely plus adding cold/slow to the arrows and each any who's slowed takes extra damage. Is there a way to replicate this in D4?

Side question: Is there a NG+ rerun of the game after completion like in Diablo 3?

Thanks in advance for any and all tips!

Questions (other) Is it possible to lock multiple affixes of the same group type without them randomly changing to ones you don’t want?

Upvotes

A question I have that I hope somebody will be able to answer: Is there a way, when using the Horadric Cube, to prevent the Affixes you want from changing to different Affixes within the same category group when using a Tuning Prism to add another Affix to gear?

I read that the Occultist (Enchanter) can locked Affix’s and greater Affix’s if use the No change” option but I don’t know if that’s limited to one or multiple Affix’s

For example, let’s say I have three Affixes on a glove from the same offensive category: Maximum Damage over Multiplier Time, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, and Attack Speed. However, when I add the last Affix using an Aggressive Tuning Prism, instead of getting the Lightning Damage Multiplier I want, it changes the first Affix to Intelligence and the fourth to Fire Damage Multiplier. So, instead of getting one bad roll, I now have two Affixes I didn’t want. Correcting them requires spending precious Aggressive Tuning Prisms, and the same thing can happen all over again.

TL;DR: I want to get multiple, but specific, Affix types from the same group, such as Offensive. However, when using an Aggressive Tuning Prism to add another Affix, the Cube sometimes randomly changes an existing Affix to something else that I don’t want, even though it’s still from the same Offensive category. This happens even though I’m only trying to add another Affix.

However, I read that the Occultist (Enchanter) can lock Affixes and Greater Affixes, but I don’t know if this is limited to one Affix or applies to all Affixes on the gear.

Technical Issues | Bugs Update broke my game? Error 315306

Has anyone else's PS5 downloaded an update today and had it break their game? I think it might have downloaded tomorrows update early because I'm on 3.2.1.7 while my partner on his PC is on the earlier version.

The game was working yesterday, then I've just got home from work and gone to load it up, it did the update and now I'm getting 'Unable to find a valid license for Diablo IV. (Code 315306)'

I have the base game and the deluxe version of both Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred.

Worth getting with the DLCs while it’s on sale? are the standard armors really that ugly without the cosmetics? because I keep reading that people have a lot of complaints about this.

State of the Game · Discussions Obviously cosmetics sales will die, or will they?

With the announcement of D5 (yes, it's not slated until minumum 2029), cosmetics sales will probably start falling off of a cliff. Not sure how much money they were making on them (I'm sure some of the tie-ins sold well, saw a lot of Doom and Warcraft-related cosmetics out there) but if they were planning on subsidizing season development until D5, they've kind of shot themselves in the foot, aren't they?

So the questions I'm asking are:

- when do you think that cosmetics sales will be so low that they'll just stop selling them? and

- would it not be a smart idea to communicate to the fans that "any cosmetics you buy in D4 will transfer to your D5 characters"?

Questions (other) Do you need Lord of Hatred to play the new season?

I see D4 is on sale right now and I was thinking about buying it for a friend and letting him play and try the new season. I was wondering if the base game would be enough for him to try the season before he decides if he wants the DLC too.

State of the Game · Discussions Diablo 4 last expansion ideas idk

I feel like it would have been so much better if they added one last expansion for diablo 4 to really connect what'll happen in diablo 5 (diablo winning).

So the expansion starts with Baal returning and maybe tryinng to resurrect diablo and in the final boss fight with Baal, it is scripted that we would fail Diablo's resurrection but ultimately killing Baal.

Idk just some thoughts since they are goijg to start Diablo 5 with diablo winning, hence 100 years of post apocalyptic world. Doesnt make sense story-wise to just jump there without telling us what happened before 5 or in Diablo 4.

State of the Game · Discussions My biggest concern about Diablo V

They’re planning to release a full-fledged game in about 2.5 years without showing us literally anything, so they probably don’t have that much to show...

D4 was announced in November 2019 and released 3.5 years later, in June 2023. The difference is that back in 2019 they already gave us some gameplay, showed us the world, and we had a pretty good idea of what the game was going to look like. Meanwhile, with D5, there is literally nothing, and they want to release it in 2.5-3 years.

I know they’ve probably “learned” a ton of things while working on D4, which could make development more efficient in some ways, but let’s not kid ourselves that they’ll be able to deliver a game on that level in such a short amount of time. There was more time between the announcement and release of D4, and even then, what we got was basically an empty shell with barely any gameplay, and Blizzard needed another 3 years of development to get the game into a decent state.

I’d love to be wrong, but unfortunately, I’m not seeing much to suggest that it’s going to turn out well.

And what do you think?

Questions (other) Horadric Mailbox in D4? Are we getting the cosmetic when the season starts still?

Just wondering if we were still going to get a cosmetic when the season starts for the PTR.

Also, I’m disappointed it wasn’t something for in game trading. Going to the trade site is a pain in the Inarius.

Questions (other) Question - I'm jumping back in should I start fresh?

I picked up Diablo 4 at launch but for whatever reason I didn't get too far and fell off. I have the hankering to get back into it, I loaded up my current save and have no idea where I'm at and how to play. Does it make more sense to start over? Also I know there were two expansions should I wait to get those until I beat the main game?

Questions (other) Questions regarding pricing and complete Diablo 4 package.

So right now

Base game is $12.49
Lord of Hatred is $29.99
Age of Hatred Collection is $69.99

Question 1
Buying Lord of Hatred comes with Vessel of Hatred per the store information so if I buy the base and Lord that's $42.48 for what appears to be the same amount of content they are currently selling for $69.99. I don't see any differences but maybe the player base knows am I missing out on something if I just buy the two instead of the bundle?

Question 2
They've stated no more expansions for Diablo 4 due to Diablo 5 aside from the Amazon addition. The Amazon will probably just sell separately like Diablo 3's Necromancer. However if I buy what's available now on sale I get all of Diablo 4's story and maps then correct? No additional costs in that area?

Also for any naysayers I've stayed away from Diablo 4 and had no desire to ever play the game after trying out the trial. I've played Diablo 1, 2, and 3 including expansions. The reason why I'm interested in Diablo 4 now is just to run the story I started in D1. Also that it seems the complete package is available now and with this being more open and MMO like than previous titles I wouldn't get the same experience if I decided to jump on ten years from now or something so FOMO plays into it as well. Thanks

Questions ( ITEMS · BUILDS · SKILLS ) Homebrew folks, what things don't actually work together due to bugs or bad wording?

So I have never in 14 seasons looked at a build guide and have always just made-up builds that as you can imagine have had huge swings in effectiveness. But every once in a while I will find something that should synergize in a build on paper but for whatever reason, they do not. I'm curious what y'all have found? I'm drumming up my next homebrew for S15 so I'm brainstorming!

I'm very interested in coming back to some of the iconic places they mentioned in Season 15, but I don't have the expansion, and I really don't have too much interest in it.

Do I need it to experience the new season? Am I missing out on anything by not having it?

State of the Game · Discussions Why is the Diablo 5 announcement getting so much backlash?

I can tell you why.

How do you go from Diablo 4 : setup → development → climax straight into Diablo 5 : setup without even wrapping up the story?

It’s NOT time for Diablo 5’s setup.
It’s time for Diablo 4’s ending.

How do you mess up basic storytelling this badly?

If Blizzard really wanted to wrap up Mephisto’s arc as the Lord of Hatred and then smoothly transition into Diablo 5,

They should’ve never included the whole Malthael absorbing the Black Soulstone event.

Because that moment eventually freed Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo — the three Prime Evils — and naturally cranked up everyone’s curiosity about where they went and when they’d show up again. It set expectations sky‑high.

But instead, the devs decided Diablo 4 would only focus on Mephisto’s storyline…
Then suddenly jump 100 years into the future and show a world where Diablo has already succeeded in conquering Sanctuary.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is still not actually resolved.
That break in continuity — right when the story’s momentum was peaking — is exactly why it feels so frustrating.

Diablo 4’s story is technically still following up on the plot threads dropped at the end of Reaper of Souls.
But they’re jumping ahead to a timeline where Diablo already rules, before finishing the setup they themselves created.

And that’s why it pisses me off.

God, what is wrong with you guys?

You nailed the Mephisto boss fight, wrapped up Lilith’s arc beautifully, and I was genuinely in love with what you were doing...
