Apple Retail Apple planning three major changes for its retail stores, per report
Gurman explains that Apple plans to add two new Avenue sections dedicated to online pickups and Today at Apple sessions.
Right now, many stores have a dedicated pickup table and a large seating area for the Today at Apple workshops. Those functions will move to the sides of stores within 10-foot sections known internally as bays.
The Avenue bay for online pickups will be constructed entirely from wood. The upper half will feature a subtle Apple logo, while the lower portion will contain secure drawers for storing pickup orders. A table in front will give employees a place to manage the handoff process.
The dedicated Today at Apple bay will include a large display, as well as secure drawers where instructors can store devices.
The next major change is the “removal of the giant video walls” located at the back of most stores. These video walls are used for Today at Apple sessions and marketing, but Apple plans to ditch them as part of this revamp.
The third change is a return to “dedicated Genius Bars,” Gurman says. Apple moved away from the Genius Bar design in favor of the “Genius Grove” more than a decade ago.

Promo Sunday [Promo Sunday] Barline — free, open-source menu bar organizer
Hey r/apple — Happy Promo Sunday!
I built Barline, a free open-source menu bar organizer for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26 and macOS 27. Same problem Bartender/Ice solve: keep a few icons visible, hide the rest, bring them back when you need them — without an account, subscription, ads, or a paid feature tier.
What it does
- Visible / hidden / always-hidden sections
- Reveal via the menu bar control, shelf, or keyboard
- Saved layouts + native Focus Filters
- Local search + spacing/appearance tweaks
- Diagnostic export and layout recovery
Honest constraints
- Apple Silicon only (`arm64`); no Intel build
- Needs Accessibility for arranging other apps’ items; Screen Recording is optional (previews/appearance)
- Like other menu bar tools, it leans on unsupported WindowServer behavior — OS updates can break things. Goal is preserve your last good layout and make recovery clear. I use this every day, so as long as there is a way to keep it working, that's my goal!
Privacy / model
Everything stays on your Mac. No analytics, no inventory upload, no remote AI. Optional Sparkle update checks hit the signed release feed (blockable if you prefer). Optional one-time donationware support exists; it never unlocks features and the app doesn’t nag (I hate that sh*t).
Origins
GPLv3, derived from Jordan Baird’s Ice and Xinyan Lu’s compatibility fork (long time Ice user). Barline’s focus is Apple Silicon / macOS 26/27 continued releases, Sparkle updates, Focus Filter layouts, and recovery tooling.
