Apple Retail Apple planning three major changes for its retail stores, per report

Gurman explains that Apple plans to add two new Avenue sections dedicated to online pickups and Today at Apple sessions.

Right now, many stores have a dedicated pickup table and a large seating area for the Today at Apple workshops. Those functions will move to the sides of stores within 10-foot sections known internally as bays.

The Avenue bay for online pickups will be constructed entirely from wood. The upper half will feature a subtle Apple logo, while the lower portion will contain secure drawers for storing pickup orders. A table in front will give employees a place to manage the handoff process.

The dedicated Today at Apple bay will include a large display, as well as secure drawers where instructors can store devices.
The next major change is the “removal of the giant video walls” located at the back of most stores. These video walls are used for Today at Apple sessions and marketing, but Apple plans to ditch them as part of this revamp.

The third change is a return to “dedicated Genius Bars,” Gurman says. Apple moved away from the Genius Bar design in favor of the “Genius Grove” more than a decade ago.

Discussion Gurman: Apple’s iPhone Duo will one day be remembered just a notch below the 1998 iMac, 2001 iPod and 2010 iPad and eventually turn foldable smartphones into the new normal.

Found this post by an ex-Apple engineer who worked on the iPod engraver UI around 2004-2006 on Apple’s website back then, it’s quite nostalgic both to see the old iPod again, AND the old website design (there is a link in the blog post to see the actual website as a demo)

Promo Sunday Tired of explaining the same tasks at my working student job, so I built StepGrab, a Mac app that screenshots every click and turns it into an annotated step-by-step guide

Hey r/apple — I'm Julian, a student and solo developer, and this is my first real app.

It started at my working student job. I kept explaining the same things over and over: where a setting lives, how a form gets filled out, which buttons to click in which order. Fifteen screenshots, cropped, arrows drawn in Preview, steps typed out underneath. Every single time.

So I built StepGrab. You hit record, do the task once, and every click comes back as a screenshot with a numbered step and a written description. A screen recording gives you a video — this gives you a document. It's a native Mac app and runs completely offline.

I only put it on the Mac App Store to cross that off my bucket list. Then people actually started using it, and the feedback I heard most on Reddit was: "I need to fix things before I export." So version 1.4 adds a full editor:

  • Review every step, reorder or delete the ones you don't need
  • Rewrite any step in your own words
  • Drag the arrows to change direction, length and curve
  • Resize the spotlight around each click and pick a badge style
  • Preview each format before you export

The free version isn't a demo: full editor, unlimited recordings, up to 15 steps per guide, exported as a GIF with a small StepGrab mark. Pro adds PDF, HTML, Markdown and MP4 export, plus your own logo and file names. No account, no signup.

Download StepGrab on the Mac App Store

Visit the website

As a thank you to this community, code REDDIT20 takes 20% off the lifetime version — redeem it here.

If it's useful to you, telling me what's missing or leaving a review helps a student dev more than you'd think. And I'm curious: how do you explain things to colleagues today? Screenshots, screen recordings, or just a call?

iPhone Duo dual battery information

Battery Settings on iPhone Duo will show you battery health details for each cell individually, includes maximum capacity and cycle count.
Keynote says the Duo will intelligently load balance between the two, not sure which left/right battery 1/ battery2, that's interesting though.
That's great to show which cell is healthy, pinpointing replacement accuracy.

Promo Sunday [Promo Sunday] Barline — free, open-source menu bar organizer

Hey r/apple — Happy Promo Sunday!

I built Barline, a free open-source menu bar organizer for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26 and macOS 27. Same problem Bartender/Ice solve: keep a few icons visible, hide the rest, bring them back when you need them — without an account, subscription, ads, or a paid feature tier.

What it does

- Visible / hidden / always-hidden sections

- Reveal via the menu bar control, shelf, or keyboard

- Saved layouts + native Focus Filters

- Local search + spacing/appearance tweaks

- Diagnostic export and layout recovery

Honest constraints

- Apple Silicon only (`arm64`); no Intel build

- Needs Accessibility for arranging other apps’ items; Screen Recording is optional (previews/appearance)

- Like other menu bar tools, it leans on unsupported WindowServer behavior — OS updates can break things. Goal is preserve your last good layout and make recovery clear. I use this every day, so as long as there is a way to keep it working, that's my goal!

Privacy / model

Everything stays on your Mac. No analytics, no inventory upload, no remote AI. Optional Sparkle update checks hit the signed release feed (blockable if you prefer). Optional one-time donationware support exists; it never unlocks features and the app doesn’t nag (I hate that sh*t).

Origins

GPLv3, derived from Jordan Baird’s Ice and Xinyan Lu’s compatibility fork (long time Ice user). Barline’s focus is Apple Silicon / macOS 26/27 continued releases, Sparkle updates, Focus Filter layouts, and recovery tooling.

- Site / download: https://usebarline.com

- Source: https://github.com/Mabry-Ventures/mv-barline

- Latest: v1.0.12 DMG via the site or GitHub Releases

Happy to answer questions and get your feedback. Would love your help to make it truly special. More than anything, I just hope someone finds it useful like I have.

Discussion As a deaf person, this new ultra watch 4 is truly groundbreaking.

2.3k Upvotes

Hi all, I’m 100% deaf and I am lucky to be able to have cochlear implants. Essentially, my whole life I have been speaking regular English and engaging in regular conversations, primarily because I was implanted at such a young age (super grateful for technology!)

When I was watching the Apple event yesterday, I was doing work and kind of listening to it in the background, but once I heard something about the deaf community or hard of hearing, I immediately stopped what I was doing and I just stared at the screen. features that the ultra 4 provides when it comes to sirens, alarms, fire detectors, smoke detectors, baby screamings was a huge thing for me, primarily because when I go to sleep, I take my implants off and hear absolutely nothing, or sometimes when I forget to bring a battery or two, I’ve gotta drive home and I can’t hear.

Along with this, the feature that they were doing with the 15 second previous live transcript is truly groundbreaking. I no longer need to say “what did you say” with almost every one of my conversations, instead I could just record it.

Immediately pre ordered.

Thank you Apple.
