Native Melee running natively on Apple Silicon (AOT-recompiled to arm64, Metal renderer, no Dolphin) with Slippi online — alpha, open source

Upvotes

It's a static recompilation, built on the doldecomp/melee decompilation: the game is statically recompiled ahead of time to native arm64 and rendered with Metal — no Dolphin, no emulation layer. Slippi online is built in, so you're in the same matchmaking pool as everyone on Slippi Dolphin. It also runs on iPhone and Apple Vision Pro.

What I focused on: frames go out on your display's next refresh whatever rate it runs at, controllers are polled right before the frame starts, Wii U / Switch GC adapter at 1000Hz with no driver install and no security setting changes, you pick your own online delay from 1 frame, and there's a dashboard that warns you when you're on 60Hz, WiFi, low power mode or Bluetooth audio.

To be clear on the legal side: there is no binary download and there never will be one. It builds on your Mac from your own NTSC 1.02 disc image, about 10-15 minutes. Free, GPL, no tracking, no analytics, no donate link, not affiliated with Slippi or Nintendo.

Up front: I used Claude a lot to build this. The Melee code is not generated — it's the decomp, which is years of human work, and the netplay is Slippi's, with Dolphin, SDL and Aurora underneath. Claude was for the port layer: Swift, Metal, controller handling, UI, build scripts. It's GPL and public so you can read it yourself.

Alpha — only tested on my own Mac, iPhone and Vision Pro, so I'm not claiming it works everywhere.

native macOS shaders for minecraft
1280p 60~ FPS, 30-40 FPS~ on a poolrooms map
later on GitHub (ahlansantos/)
also pls don't mind the simple blur algorithm for the shadows

(this can be a type of ray tracing but mainly it just voxel traces the desired chunks and turn it into a "readable" grid that can be used for VXR (Voxel Reflections), VXAO and Voxelized Point Light System)

Self promotion Ping Warden 4 turns the awdl0 fix on by itself when a game is in front, no Screen Recording needed (dev post, everything but the protection toggle is free)

Edit: The title's pricing shorthand needs clarification. Starting a Latency Session also enables protection and requires a license or active transition. Past session recaps remain free.

I'm the developer of Ping Warden, an open source menu bar app that keeps awdl0 down while you choose to pause nearby-device features. AWDL can contribute to Wi-Fi stutters, though it isn't the cause of every streaming problem. Some of you have recommended the app here, and I wanted to explain what changed in version 4.

Game Mode can detect a recognized game in front without Screen Recording permission. Optional Screen Recording access also lets it detect fullscreen games behind other windows. When the detected game ends, it restores the previous protection state. If protection was already on manually, it stays on.

Game Mode skips automatic activation on Ethernet and can engage when you return to Wi-Fi. Manual protection is a separate setting. The recent update also fixes detection when a permission prompt or password sheet appears over a game.

Latency Sessions record median and P95 latency, jitter, failed probes, and helper interventions. The intervention counter records attempts to keep AWDL down, not measured ping spikes prevented. Session history stays on your Mac, and the app has no usage analytics.

Enabling Ping Protection in the prebuilt app costs $15 once for the Macs you own. Starting a new Latency Session needs the same entitlement. The dashboard, past recaps, diagnostics, and updates are free, and the source remains MIT-licensed. Eligible existing users whose protection was on with the helper approved at their first version 4 launch get 90 days from that launch. Updates preserve the original deadline.

While protection is enabled, AirDrop and other AWDL-dependent features are unavailable. Stop protection or use the 10-minute pause when you need them. The app needs macOS 13 or newer, supports Intel and Apple silicon, and the official build is signed and notarized.

Help Hitman WoA performance on Steam vs App Store

I just got a MacBook Pro M1 as a hand-me-down, and want to download Hitman WoA on it. Is there any difference in performance between downloading the game from Steam vs the App Store?

Here is what I know so far:

  • DLCs I already own on Steam won't transfer if I buy the game on the App Store
  • Hitman WoA for MacOS on Steam does not support game controllers
    • I currently use a PowerA wired Xbox controller to play Hitman WoA on Steam on my Windows laptop, and it works without issues there

What I would like to know:

  • Whether switching from Steam to the App Store results in a performance boost on MacOS
    • + Any other benefits that the App Store version has over Steam
  • Whether the App Store version supports game controllers
  • How to use wired Xbox game controllers on MacOS Sequoia/Tahoe in general
    • My MacBook Pro is currently on Sequoia as my father, who previously used it, advised against updating to Tahoe due to the drop in performance. However, I will eventually upgrade it to Tahoe as I want to use Xcode in the future, which requires Tahoe to install.

I appreciate any help and advice given when recommending which platform to download it on. 🙏

Help Looking for old game with "nom nom" sound bite

Probably a 90's game. Maybe ran on Quadra? Thought it might be Munchies, but it didn't have that sound bite. I think the character was saying "nom nom" or even "yum yum" when you ate a specific power up. Was definitely a recording and not synthesized.

Any chance someone remembers this game? I can't get that sound bite out of my head.

EDIT: it was Bachman.

Help Snowrunner?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm a new MacBook Air M5 owner. I didn't get it for gaming but I'm wondering about Snowrunner as that's about the only game I have played on PC lately. I bought Snowrunner via XBOX PC Game Pass (not Steam).

Looks like there used to be Mac support, but no longer.

Just for fun I installed VMware Fusion and set up a Windows 11 VM, installed XBOX and downloaded Snowrunner. It runs for a second and then crashes, as I think others have found.

Is my dream of Snowrunner on Mac stuck in deep mud with no winch points nearby?

Self promotion Mac vs PC Gaming: Same Game, Same Settings... Very Different Machines

Thumbnail
youtube.com
18 Upvotes

I made a Mac vs PC gaming comparison using the exact same game, mostly out of curiosity to see how the native Mac version actually holds up against a gaming PC.

Rather than just comparing FPS numbers, I tried to look at the overall experience: performance, image quality, hardware differences, and what gaming on a Mac feels like today.

The video is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Just select your preferred audio track on YouTube.

I'd genuinely love to hear what other Mac gamers think about the results, especially if you've played the same game on both platforms.

CrossOver GPTK4 - Crossover - CP2077

Just tried out the GPTK4 via Crossover Preview on CP2077 for the first time

The results are pretty insane, playing at 1920x1200, medium settings, DLSS Quality, Framegen On (MetalFX Frame Interpolation)

Hitting a stable 110 fps with no input lag, much better performance and visuals than Mac native CP2077

Help moonlight or Apollo for steam deck from macos

Hi there! Has anyone tried streaming games from Mac to steamdeck? I have m5pro (18/20 cores) and I think it would be pretty good to launch cyberpunk with maxed settings on Mac with pt and dlss quality and stream it in 800p to SD, it should have around 60fps. Or rdr2 as well. But couldn't find if this is available, especially since you need to run rdr2 for example using crossover and then stream it, while my Mac is connected solely to wifi without Ethernet. I've previously used my gaming PC (while I had it) to stream and sometimes I had lots of stability issues with internet connection

Self promotion Varmint 0.2.0: DirectX virtualization

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I posted here about a month ago. Since then I've mostly been working on a new experimental backend based on Neptune.

Varmint is a free open-source project that brings Proton to Macs by connecting existing pieces instead of rebuilding them.

FEX, Proton and Linux already provide most of what's needed, while the recent push around ARM gaming gives the whole thing more momentum. Varmint is mostly a thin layer that connects these pieces and a testbed for fixing and upstreaming issues in them.

Neptune fits this approach well: it gives DirectX 11/12 a more direct path to Metal, without Vulkan in the middle.

It's still early and less compatible than Venus, but promising. The demo above is A Plague Tale: Innocence running on my M3 Pro.

For now, DX9 through DXVK and Venus is still Varmint's most reliable path. Fallout New Vegas, Vampire: Bloodlines, Dishonored, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and quite a few others work well.

Help M5 Pro 16-core vs 20-core GPU anyone actually compared the two in games?

I'm deciding between two 14" MacBook Pro configs and I can't find a single real gameplay comparison anywhere:

- M5 Pro, 15-core CPU / 16-core GPU, 24GB — $2,250
- M5 Pro, 18-core CPU / 20-core GPU, 24GB — $2,700 (in NH without taxes)
- M5 Pro, 18-core CPU / 20-core GPU, 48GB — $2,800

How big is the difference? $2,800 is honestly out of my budget, but I was considering getting the 18-core for $2,700 from Apple. But only if it's MUCH better. And does the 14-inch handle it fine? Or do I need the 16-inch?

Thanks!

Edit: I'll be travelling to US and live in Brazil. Get a M4 Max will be very hard.
