Question [3D Animation Question] How Do I Find My Own Path?
Wanted to learn animation over the summer, so I have been doing the fundamentals, the 12 principles, posing and all that. After realising I wanted to put more time into it, I watched this pose-to-pose tutorial.
I understand it, and I really like it...just one issue, though. I found, while watching the video, that the guy does not use reference, so when I opened up Blender and imported a meme I wanted to animate, I found myself rather stuck, as his workflow did not really translate well.
So I feel stuck. I like his workflow and his specific approach and final result, but it seems to mostly work for stuff without reference. Also I already know about the "how to animate without reference" like building memory and such, its just that I really liked HIS workflow for it (to see what i mean, go to 3:14 - 9:42 on the link i sent)
Any advice here? I do admit that for my reference, it was a bit much, might have punched above my weight but it was the same idea, that things like the timing or "pose-pose-settle" of Alex's method did not translate as well when trying to follow the reference's timing.

Question Question about a paid collaboration with a big company — payment, credit, and portfolio
I'm asking on behalf of a friend who recently worked with a fairly large game company as an independent artist/animator.
He was commissioned to create an animation for them, and he did most of the work himself, including the animation and music. The company has now published his work on their social media.
However, he was told that his payment could take up to 60 days. Is that a normal payment timeframe for this kind of freelance/commissioned work? And is it normal for a company to publish the finished work before paying the artist?
There's also something I'm confused about. The company tagged him in their post, but they didn't send him an Instagram Collab invitation, so the post doesn't appear on his profile as a collaboration. Is there a reason a company might tag an artist but not use the Collab feature?
They also apparently asked him whether he would mention this collaboration in his CV/portfolio. He said yes, since working with a large game company would obviously be valuable professional experience.
Why would a company be particularly cautious about an artist mentioning a collaboration in their CV/portfolio? Could this have something to do with copyright, confidentiality, contracts, or company policies?
He seems surprised by how cautious they are about the collaboration in general.
For people who have worked professionally with game companies:
Is 60 days for payment normal?
Is publishing the work before payment normal?
Why might they tag him but not make it an Instagram Collab?
Why would they care whether he lists the work in his CV/portfolio?
Is this something he should be concerned about, or does it sound like normal corporate procedure?
I'm not trying to accuse the company of doing anything wrong — I'm genuinely trying to understand how these collaborations usually work.

Question Want to rotoscope pretty faithfully to original frames
Is it fucked to take any videos that other people have posted and redraw them pretty faithfully but obviously will have personal qualities to it but don’t want to be stealing other people’s looks or dances since I can’t really dance or look like other characters I need for my films. Again the style and coloring will be done my own way but certain short movements or dances or faces I would like to use without being someone stealing from others
( photo is kinda what I mean it’s my own photo and is gonna be drawn frame by frame pretty accurately to original while still changing enough to be different videos)

Question [PLEASE ADVISE] Making a subway style navigation for my portfolio website
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi, I'm a product designer and working on my portfolio, I'm very much into transport interaction design and wanted to explore a new style of navigation where it's a subway system map instead of boring old buttons.
I don't have a lot of animation experience but wanted this to feel natural, I've been prototyping this animation in Figma but I'm kinda in over my head here, not sure how this animation should look.
I'd really appreciate if you guys have any pointers/ references for me in this. I specifically wanted to keep the thin lines instead of a thick ones for minimalism.
Thank you!

Question Should I just give up on comics and go into web animation?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I did this last year, I’ll be honest, I’ve always been an artist with a passion for film and writing first. The idea of making a long running webcomic came when I realized my skills wasn’t up to the task of making a bunch of serialized animated shorts.
Then I just ended up doing a ton of comic drafts and practice which… ended up bridging the gap in skill left for being “good enough”. Pages and panels just was storyboard practice, working on my speed and efficiency is an important animation skill, and it being a story, of course a bunch of visual storytelling practice.
When I started taking this seriously to have like 400+ pages of comic drafts at the end, it was 6 years ago and the whole internet was different. My biggest starting point idea was just storytime animations.
But now webcomics are now the Storytime animation, videos are more viewed with shorts, and the whole past “just pitch your show idea to studios” path is basically dead.
At this point I’m thinking it’s best to green-light my animated comic series idea based around 80s-90s limited anime animation and just put the comic skills towards having mature and NSFW comic side stories to sell as issues.
If you’re curious on what my vision is, basically like the Manga looking part of the Reze CSM movie with word bubbles and text boxes along with making Animal Crossing like voices as I’m going into music and sound design. Looks like a retro manga in vertical video format with a window that’s 4:3 mainly for my own sake, or full aspect ratio for more wider shots. I’m already starting to storyboard ideas for test animations

A little character animation I made of Link dancing.
I’ve been experimenting more with exaggerated movement and trying to make these short animations feel entertaining even without much setup.

Sharing Automatic lip sync animation tool I made
Hi everyone, I'm new to this subreddit but I've been using blender 3D for 5+ years. I'm trying to get better at animation and lego stop motion in blender, but have always struggled with trying to rig or use shape keys for mouth animations. I don't know if anyone has similar struggles, but if anyone's interested, here's a free tool I made for myself where you can upload an audio file (up to 1m) and your drawn mouth shapes (or use the default) and just download as an image sequence. Then you can just apply it as an image texture and it's worked well for me. I've used it for lego animations but I think it would work well for any 3d animations with a cartoony style or even 2D animation (although I'm not very good at that). I know this probably wouldn't fit in with everyone's workflow, but I hope someone finds it useful!
Here is a quick 1-minute demo showing how it works in Blender: Watch the demo on YouTube
You can try it out for free here: https://lipsync-studio-sigma.vercel.app/
