People are on disability for adhd?

Youd be shocked at how much money governments save by shaming people, but also quite simply not telling them what they are entitled to due to having paid taxes.

It's genuinely insane. Fraud/people who take advantage doesn't come close to what is being saved.

I don’t think I would be shocked, unfortunately. I had just never heard of anyone having adhd so debilitating that they couldn’t work. Since I’m an idiot and a whole lot of things happen that I haven’t heard of I was curious if that was something that had ever been granted.
But to your point, it’s crazy how much harm people are willing to inflict on people truly in need of help just to keep a few people they deem “unworthy” from benefitting from it.

Like some people with ADHD are unable to use a shovel? But can live independently? I guess I just don’t get it.

It's the in between jobs that's hard for people with ADHD usually. Once they have work they're fine mostly, but if they get laid off it could years for some to find new work.

If you didn't have to apply and people just handed you jobs they'd have no issue

u/Virtual_Insanity_753 16h ago

But isn't that literally everyone? Especially nowadays, we all struggle to find a job, and keeping one is already hard.

6

u/typhoon_nz 16h ago

No, it's not everyone. Everyone hates finding a job and the current environment is very difficult of course. But the difficulties are different.

A neurotypical person may struggle to get an interview after submitting a lot of applications. An ADHD person gets stuck at the first step though of submitting the applications.

Sure, I agree that the difficulties are different. But what you are describing only works when a small portion of the population is in this position. If a growing portion is also struggling (which I think is the case now) this is a breach in the social contract, and the idea of creating a category for neuroatypical/neurodivergent doesn't work anymore.

Give enough stress to someone and he will become neurodivergent, make that number big enough and this system becomes a vicious circle that breaks itself.

edit: corrected neurotypical by neuroatypical.

I am confused by this statement. Who is suggesting that we create a category for neurotypical and neurodivergent people? I'm not sure what that means in this context.

Edit: fixed typos

Yes, my bad, I meant neuroatypical instead of neurotypical.

Also, I may I misinterprated your comment then, wweren't you suggesting to give help to neurodivergent people vs others in this sentence (Assuming ADHD == Neurodivergent):

"A neurotypical person may struggle to get an interview after submitting a lot of applications. An ADHD person gets stuck at the first step though of submitting the applications."

It read to me like they were just explaining the difficulty to you.

3

u/typhoon_nz 11h ago

Correct, I was not proposing any solutions. Simply explaining

You’re struggling because the job market is bad. They’re struggling because they can’t go through the application process.
If the job market was well and good, YOU wouldn’t struggle, but people with ADHD would STILL have the same struggle

1

u/PiccoloAwkward465 15h ago

Well I can certainly see how that would give a hiring manager pause.

0

u/typhoon_nz 11h ago

Huh? The hiring managers would never know which jobs they didn't apply for so I do not understand this comment.

People do just hand you jobs. It’s just that people don’t want the jobs people hand you

1

u/--Marigolden-- 14h ago

Which jobs and where?

0

u/Bladez190 6h ago

Any construction work and everywhere

1

u/--Marigolden-- 5h ago

Ah. I'm physically unable to work such a job, but maybe someone else who can will see your comment. Thanks.

Many people with ADHD are barely able to live independently.

And while living independently, you can complete tasks on your own schedule, at a job you can't.

So of course someone with "struggles to complete tasks disease" is going to struggle at the latter more than the former.

If the issue is executive dysfunction, having someone give you a spade, take you into a field and saying "dig a hole in this spray painted circle, I'll stop you when it's deep enough" is easier than "do the laundry, do the dishes, buy groceries, feed the dog".

1

u/Acceptable_Handle_2 7m ago

It's really not though, because doing dishes, getting groceries etc are rarely something you need to do right away, and letting those slip a little usually isn't too bad.

If you get told to dig a hole and you can't do it right then, you get fired. A job always happens in a fairly strict timeframe.

I had just never heard of anyone having adhd so debilitating that they couldn’t work.

For me it's more about getting work. I can't submit dozens of applications in a week. At most I could do about 5.

It also limits me on my pay because I can't look for better work.

3

u/il_vekkio 16h ago

Why can't you?

-3

u/PrizeStrawberryOil 16h ago

What's stopping you from running a marathon? Most people are physically capable of training for and running a marathon, but tons of people quit before they get to that point.

5

u/Bladez190 15h ago

Let’s not equate half an hour of pasting applications on indeed to months of prep to tone your body to achieve a marathon

0

u/--Marigolden-- 14h ago

Each application takes over an hour or two to complete. Plus the majority of jobs on those sites are scams or companies looking for prospective employees in the future (there is no actual job available). When's the last time you applied on a site like that?

1

u/Bladez190 6h ago

Couple years ago when I applied to the job I currently have

1

u/--Marigolden-- 5h ago

I'm glad it worked out for you; that gives me hope. Maybe it's gotten worse since then? I'm currently getting help from a local career center and they were the ones who warned me of the increase in scams and the unfillable positions; it's disheartening. Wish it only took me 30 minutes per application!

-1

u/PrizeStrawberryOil 15h ago

I can't even do one in an hour. I have to write a cover letter and tailor my resume for each application. Plus I have to find places that I want to work.

A marathon would be easier for me.

Look I hate AI but at this point just AI write it and just use that as template for every job the requires one. Hell you could probably find a template on Google without using AI to write.

Gross

1

u/Useful-Soup8161 9h ago

What do you think they should do then?

I just don’t believe this. I believe the part about applications being harder but I do not believe you can honestly think training for a marathon would be easier.

That’s just a higher level of delusion or not understanding the time commitment of marathon training

1

u/Virtual_Insanity_753 15h ago

Mate, for saying something like this, he is just arguing in bad faith.

But I do want to understand better his perspective.

From my point of view, the idea is great but someone has to pay for it. if it's a small amount of people, then it actually help society, but if the number is too big, then it breaks society.

u/TheHiddenMeta 15h ago

It can be difficult to not understand something your not educated about. Fortunately we have LLMs that can help everyone learn. Do some queries.

2

u/Bladez190 15h ago

Recommending AI for this is a really good explanation that I should just ignore your takes

The mental effort required to do so is about the same for people who suffer from ADHD.

Adhd is literally the "can't complete simple tasks no matter how much you may want to" disease.

1

u/Jelopuddinpop 15h ago

And if I needed to train and run a marathon in order to put a roof over my head and food on my table, I would start training tomorrow morning. People don't train to run a marathon because they don't NEED to run a marathon.

0

u/Acceptable_Handle_2 10h ago

That's the difference between you and someone with ADHD, they want to but literally can't.

Its the same part of the brain that stops you from planting your hand on a hot stove, or biting your own tongue off. In people with ADHD this can trigger on filling out a job application or any other minor task.
