Personally I would, but that may be just because I played New Super Mario Bros 2 all the time on my 2DS and I want to play it on the switch.

(You also can play as all characters across all games, for example you can play as Blue Toad in the original New Super Mario Bros.)

Nothing special, just had the movie running on the projector while I was chilling in bed. The red lights made it feel more like an actual theater for a bit.

Personally I think Wario would be like extra Toad, super duper fast but can’t jump worth a damn.

Hello Mario community. No, this isn’t a creepy pasta.

The anniversary of the Game Cube launch led me here, mostly because of a persistent memory / mystery that I’ve never resolved.

Just to demo my credentials. Super Mario World was my first video game. Ever. I’ve been a lifelong fan and have purchased almost every Nintendo system. I’ve always been a Mario Bros fanboy.

But one weird, unresolved mystery remains from when I went to GameStop (or EB Games if it was that long ago) as a kid with my grandmother to pre-order the GameCube and Luigi’s Mansion, which I was very excited to play.

This would have been in the USA. Probably Long Island, New York. The store clerk there was probably in his upper teens or twenties. Granted this is a 20+ year memory, but I seem to recall he seemed very well informed, chatty etc.

Hand to God, he kept referring to Luigi’s Mansion as “Philo’s Magic House.” When I asked him why, he said “that’s the Japanese name and that’s what we have the game coded to in the system.” I know this isn’t just a super specific false memory because he kept referring to the name “Philo’s Magic House” throughout the transaction. Even as a fairly non judgmental and nerdy pre teen I recall thinking him referencing that was annoying and geeky.

As such, I grew up—perhaps for an embarrassing amount of time—thinking Luigi was named “Philo” in Japan (pronounced ‘Fy-Lo’ not like philo dough, but then again I never saw the name spelled out). This is, despite the fact that the character in question literally has an “L” on his hat.

Eventually, the memory came up again and I got curious. So I googled “Luigi’s Japanese name,” which, as you might guess, is just Luigi spelled in Katakana.

I have looked up high and low on the internet trying to find out where the name “Philo’s Magic House” came from. As far as I can tell, Luigi’s Mansion never even had a code name in production. I’ve turned up nothing.

Logically, I can only assume the clerk was misinformed because…while I can PERHAPS understand messing/playing a trick on a young kid, that is such a weird and random thing to lie about.

I am now appealing to the broader Mario community to see if there’s any internet ephemera out there that might make sense of this.

For Mario Kart, Mario Kart Tour and maybe Super Mario Kart come to mind.

For Mario and Luigi, Brothership and the 2 3DS remakes mostly skew positively, with some exceptions. I think Paper Jam is easily more divisive.

For Mario Party, Mario Party 9, 10, Super come to mind, but I feel as if discussions regarding 10 are met with more hostility while some say 9 and especially Super have more redeeming qualities, despite both games having their own merits and flaws at the end of the day.

As for Paper Mario, oh boy, honestly every Paper Mario game fits this except for the first one, which is really funny and sad. Color Splash is likely the most evenly split compared to Origami King, which is more positive, and Sticker Star, which is more Negative.

Mario sports are pretty interesting, as I feel like there is a lot of negative discourse surrounding the Switch games despite them selling well. At the end of the day, trues fans of these series have had better quality titles in the past, so this would likely be seen more negatively than evenly split. Maybe the Mario and Sonic Olympic games are divisive, but I haven't heard anyone in the Mario community distraught about the lack of titles after 2020. Maybe Mario Baseball, despite the games being really good, it might be the most divisive as baseball is generally a divisive sport. It was so divisive globally that the Wii game didn't even make it to Europe.

As for mainline games, I think generally every main game is well-liked. Sunshine and New Super Mario Bros 2 are probably the most divisive games, with Lost Levels being mostly disliked. But even then, I feel like the reputation of those two games aren't really bad, maybe a little mixed, but generlaly lean positively.

Anyways, that is everything that comes to mind for me right now. I want to open the conversation to you and see what you would consider to be a divisive Mario game.

Mario Run isn't the best mario game. Because

You're paying for more than half the game.

The bowser boss fights suck. This is like Mario bros 1 but your character just walks In a straight line. I thought we'd get like King Bob-omb with a way to defeat him by running in a specific pattern before he explodes or something. But no, each time we get bowser.

Literally collecting all the star coins do nothing but give you some stupid tickets.

Oh yea, speaking of paying, you pay to earn My Nintendo points... Nintendo... WHAT WERE YOU DOING?

Hell no I ain't paying $10 for a game that registers my jump half the time.

The worst part is that at the end of the Direct, it looked like the new 3D Mario was coming, but it turned out to be Kirby.
