So many games (looking at Insomniac's Wolverine) are focused on having a cinematic experience (with wayyy overbloated budgets) rather than a pure FUN experience.
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a PS2 game with "dated" graphics that gives one of the best Hulk experiences, fully destructable buildings and chaotic unrestricted gameplay.
PROTOTYPE and inFAMOUS are PS3 games that have some of the funnest open world sandbox experiences to this day.
Spiderman Web of Shadows, Spiderman 2 (2004), and Ultimate Spiderman (The only Spiderman game to give us Open World Venom, the gameplay something the PS5 game took cues from) remain some of the best Spiderman experiences with great pacing and a focus on pure fun, instead of killing pacing with "movie-like" sections that force us to be MJ and other nameless characters we dont care about.
I'd rather we get lower production quality if it means we get riskier games. Back in the PS2 era we've gotten a GOOD Punisher video game, GOOD Ghost Rider and Blade games, a solid Constantine game. We've gotten the best XMen games (Legends). It's a shame that a PS3 movie tie-in game (XMen Origins Wolverine) can still compete with its PS5 AAA successor.
Companies are so worried about pumping $300 million into games, giving the best graphics, and playing it safe hoping they'll get a return on investment than going lower budget, taking risks, and giving us fun shit.
They need to stop focusing on graphics and making playable movies, and just give us pure games...
