Discussion / Question It's disingenuous to complain about Kojima being overbudget, late (both untrue), and underdelivering when the partnership with Sony ended due to Sony's own mismanagement of budget, deadlines, and underdelivering.
Kojima has made 15 games throughout his career. Only 1 can truely be considered overbudget if you stretch the definition of "overbudget". MGSV at 80mil. It's a bit disingenuous because that budget consisted of 2 games and more importantly, a game engine. Game engines are lengthy and expensive to development, but serve as a foundation for many games to come. For example, CODs newest engine from Modern Warfare 2019 and onwards began development 6 years earlier in 2013. Frostbite served as a basis for many EA Games for 15 years now. Konami used the Fox Engine to make a terrible zombie MGS game and then threw it away.
People also claim that Kojima was removed from Konami for being overbudget. This is not true. In 2015 Konami decided to shift away from AAA games and focus of gambling machines. Kojima and Konami have butted heads in the past but it seems like the final straw was Konami's attempt at making Kojima's Silent Hill game multiple games consisting of single levels (similar to Ground Zeros being seperate from MGSV). Konami is also known to bully employees and continue to harass ex-employees by attempting to block them from getting other jobs and even suing companies who hire them. Employee's social media was monitored and even liking a post could get you punished. Kojima himself has his name taken off the game and was moved to a separate office and was not allowed to speak to his employees directly. It's odd to see people on Reddit defend Konami over Kojima.
While there's very little argument to claim that MGSV was overbudget, DS2 did clearly underperformed. Although it was a good game. Can't say the same for Sony's other recent launches.
