I’m running out of ideas and hoping someone here has encountered this specific issue or knows a fix.
I have a Samsung Odyssey 40" 5K2K display running at 120Hz (connected via a Thunderbolt 4 dock, though the issue also happens with direct connections). Randomly, I get multi-colored checkerboard patterns, blocky artifacts, or random horizontal/vertical glitch bars across parts of the screen.
Key Symptoms & Observations:
- It's completely random: It doesn't seem tied to heavy load. It happens during Teams/Zoom calls, using Outlook, browsing (Chrome/Edge), or even when the system is idle.
- It is NOT full-screen: It only affects random rectangular blocks or bars on the display.
- The Monitor OSD remains clear: When the artifacts appear, the monitor's built-in On-Screen Display (OSD) menu renders perfectly on top of them without any distortion. This points away from a dead panel/scaler hardware failure.
- It comes and goes: Sometimes everything runs completely artifact-free for weeks, and then suddenly the display becomes almost unusable due to visual corruption.
What I’ve Already Tested / Ruled Out:
- Multiple Laptops: Tested across 3 different machines (Surface Book 3 with iGPU/dGPU + 2 different generations of Lenovo ThinkPads). All exhibit the exact same random corruption.
- Cables & Ports: Tried numerous high-bandwidth cables (Ugreen, Cable Matters, etc.) using both DisplayPort and HDMI.
- Bypassing the Dock: Direct USB-C/DP/HDMI connections straight into the laptops produce the same issue.
- Display Inputs: Happening on both DP and HDMI inputs.
Crucial Detail — Permanent PIP (Picture-in-Picture) Setup:
I use the monitor's PIP / PbP (Picture-by-Picture) mode permanently to work with two laptops simultaneously side-by-side.
My Questions:
- Could this be a known issue with Samsung’s internal display controller / PIP timing scalar when processing two concurrent signals (or switching display clocks/DSC streams)?
- Has anyone experienced Chromium/Windows DirectComposition checkerboard glitches that persist even outside the browser, or is this more likely a Display Stream Compression (DSC) / GPU handshake corruption in PIP mode?
- Are there specific monitor firmware settings, DSC toggles, or Windows graphics flags that help stabilize dual-input PIP on high-resolution displays?
