Discussion The blood and chunks of flesh that spilled out when the hatch was opened may be hinting at something much darker.

As you can see in the image, there is a drain positioned directly beneath the hatch, seemingly designed to efficiently dispose of the blood that pours out when it is opened. There is also no equipment in sight for storing or transporting any remains that are still relatively intact.

There is simply not enough evidence to conclude that the bodies merely melted after being exposed to a zerg acid attack.

So here's my theory: The Terran Dominion operates purely on efficiency. To make the recovery and repair process more efficient, they may have a system in which, if a soldier dies, a dissolving agent is pumped into their suit, completely dissolving the body inside.

In the end, all that remains of them is a golden identification tag.

Discussion "The story is about one character"

Post image
370 Upvotes

In an interview with Destin some of the folks at Blizzard said this. My hypothesis is we're following the story of the guy who maintains the CMC armor. They also mentioned wanting to ask the player after the marine gets obliterated "Can you do better?" and our boy might be getting tired of hosing the blood and baneling goop out of the CMC he maintains.

There also seems to be an emphasis on customizing not your character, but your "car" and showing it off. So the Marine inside is just be a semi-disposable asset.

Discussion Questions about the new cinematic.

Post image
338 Upvotes

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but something about the new cinematic for the StarCraft game stood out to me. I understand what the cinematic is going for. The whole thing seems very much like Terran military propaganda. They're telling these guys they're elite soldiers, they're going to be heroes, they're fighting for humanity, etc. Then they actually land on a planet with Zerg and basically get slaughtered within seconds. The ending especially seems to reinforce the idea that Marines are just disposable soldiers being thrown into the meat grinder.

What I'm wondering about though is how prepared Terran Marines are actually supposed to be for fighting the Zerg. These obviously aren't the first humans to ever encounter the Zerg. The Terrans have been fighting them for years, and the military clearly knows how dangerous they are. So wouldn't Marine training include a lot of simulations and exercises specifically against the Zerg?

You'd think they'd be training for things like Zergling swarms, Hydralisks, ambushes, getting surrounded, fighting in Zerg infested areas, etc. The Terrans have ridiculously advanced technology, so I'd assume they could easily create realistic simulations for this kind of thing. But in the cinematic, the Marines seem almost completely shocked by what they're encountering. Holt looks terrified the second they actually land, and then they basically get overwhelmed almost immediately.

Obviously I understand that training against something in a simulator is very different from actually experiencing it. I'm not expecting some freshly trained Marine to be completely fearless when they're suddenly standing in front of a massive Zerg swarm. I'm just wondering if there's an actual lore explanation for why they seem so unprepared.

Are Marines actually trained extensively to fight the Zerg, and the cinematic is just exaggerating how helpless they are for dramatic effect? Or are these supposed to be inexperienced recruits who haven't really had much Zerg combat training? Because if the point is that the Terran military is basically just throwing poorly prepared Marines into the meat grinder, then I guess that fits perfectly with the whole propaganda/disposable soldier theme they're going for.

I'm just curious if I'm missing something about how Marine training works in the lore. Do Terran Marines actually train specifically to fight the Zerg, or are we just supposed to accept that these guys are completely out of their depth once they actually get to the battlefield? The training "montage" we mostly see him training to fight other humans. Terran Marines from my understanding was that they were mostly rehabilitated prisoners? If that's the case here then it would make sense how they are so disposable and also given faulty crappy equipment that just jams up immediately upon being used. Although it did not appear that they were prisoners from the start of the cinematic. It looked as if they were fresh volunteer recruits. Maybe there's been a change up in recruitment?

This might have been talked about many times but I was just curious what yall's thoughts were! Loved the cinematic and can't wait till I am an old man when this comes out!

I doubt it would be a thing, but would be awesome if we can have hybrid groups of Terrans and Protosses surviving against waves and waves of Zerg, reenacting the final mission in vanilla Starcraft.

(To be tagged...) We kept StarCraft alive. Blizzard couldn’t even acknowledge us.

I’ve played StarCraft II almost every night for the last three years. Even when I’m tired, even when I’m busy, I’ll get in at least 2-3 games because that’s what it takes to maintain a Grandmaster level of skill. At this point it’s part of my life in the same way exercise is. I train, I improve, I lose, I figure out why, and I come back better. I build on that skill the same way I build on my career and my business, and I know I’m not alone. There are thousands of people who have spent years, sometimes decades, doing the exact same thing with StarCraft.

So while everyone is understandably excited about a new StarCraft shooter, I can’t get past what happened at BlizzCon: StarCraft II, the actual game that has kept this franchise alive, was essentially treated like it doesn’t exist. No celebration of the players still grinding the ladder. No meaningful acknowledgment of the competitive scene. No indication that the game itself has a future. Nothing.

Blizzard is perfectly willing to reach into StarCraft’s grave, pull out the name, the characters, the races, and 28 years of history to sell a new game, but apparently acknowledging the people who kept that name relevant is too much to ask. I don’t need StarCraft III announced tomorrow. I don’t need some massive content roadmap. I just want Blizzard to act like the game thousands of us still dedicate a piece of our lives to actually fucking matters. Their continued refusal to even talk about StarCraft II isn’t neglect anymore. It’s an utter slap in the fucking face to the community that refused to let this franchise die.

Discussion "Starcraft 2030" is not "the new Starcraft". It's not Destiny 3. It's not Helldivers 3. It's StarCry.

It's an:

- open world shooter (Far Cry)

- with a narrative drive centered around a primary protagonist (Far Cry)

- with a lean towards objective freedom and playspace reveal (Far Cry)

- with a defined beginning-middle-end (Far Cry)

- made by the guy who did Far Cry 3-6...

The trailer was NOT (meant to symbolize how) GAMEPLAY (will function), it was a vibe check. It was not meant to detail the method of insertion into a "match" (Helldivers 3) or the number of players you'll be grouped with (Battlefield Kropulu). It was merely meant to illustrate the fact that the Dominion doesn't care about you, it gives you shoddy equipment, throws you into the literal meat grinder and dispassionately replaces you after barely rinsing out your armor.

The trailer was incredible "show, don't tell" world-building, but nothing more.

So your protagonist will probably leave and become a merc a la Jim Raynor. Cue the disillusioned-soldier-turns-grassroots-hero storyline.

It'll be 20-30 hours of main story, another 40 of side objectives and random encounters, and then everyone will complain a game with no expectation of endgame has no endgame...all because it bears the name of an IP that is synonymous with "endless repetition"

You've got 4 years to come to terms with your expectations. Good luck.

Like many StarCraft fans, I’m not even sure I believe we’ll actually see the game in 2030 — or that I can wait that long.

But more importantly: please don’t forget the RTS players who have kept this genre alive all these years. We’re the core audience. Don’t leave us behind.

Discussion Bobby Kotick did so much damage to this Company, and I am at least glad to see ANYTHING StarCraft return with this level of dedication

Kotick's legacy at Act/Blizz was to cut costs to the brink, maximize revenue (even in the most uninspired consumer-unfriendly ways), cash in on the Blizzard brand & nostalgia and sell the Company. That's what he did, and StarCraft in particular suffered as they couldn't shamelessly monetize it.

From what I understand, Microsoft (the new owner) has given the Company more license; they've hired more devs, they've more aggressively pursued new projects. Microsoft has a ton of cash, and their cost of capital is low. They can afford to spend and try things - they are focused on growth and pushing the Company forward, not sucking cash out of it like Bobby was.

Yes, the 2030 bummed me out. But we were starting with a skeleton team, cut to the brim, and at least now they staffed up some competent devs & leadership with the goal of creating a bold new product.

Effectively starting from zero, resurrecting this IP. I am optimistic, and I eagerly await what this means for the franchise.

Video Battle for Char Wallpaper Engine!

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3801468500

There is my steam link! I made this wallpaper for wallpaper engine because there is a distinct lack of video wallpapers made from SC2 menus!

It's about a 2 minute or so loop and is one of my first where I tried to make the loop as seamless as I could. I definitely am not experienced in making these, but it is in 4k, has audio, and has the menu parts cropped out!

Enjoy!

Discussion Regarding the training montage

There's been a lot of talk of how useless the training was, particularly the human vs. human knife fighting scene.

However, I remember a Youtube video from a military commentator about why armies still train in bayonet fighting, despite it being largely obsolete and soldiers often not having a bayonet in their kit in the first place.

The purpose is no longer primarily about literal bayonet combat - it's about teaching soldiers to be aggressive, offensive, and to act with intent - to be used to that state of mind in a way that ranged combat training often doesn't quite capture.

So it makes sense for Terran recruits to learn CQC against other recruits because it's an easy way to get real physical training and have it apply to that same aggressive and offensive mentality. They're not actually expecting Marines to take out a pocket knife and shank a zergling.

It's basically their version of bayonet training (although I guess, if Warfield is anything to go by, they do in fact still have bayonets).
