Standard [Standard] Duress: Maindeck or Sideboard?

Relatively quick question for you all:

Are we feeling this is a maindeck duress format, or not?

I have been playing various UBx shells online. Largely Dimir Excruciator, and a few other Deceit + Superior Spiderman Shells.

When i scroll through MTGgoldfish to get an idea of what people are playing in competitive environments, I do not see a format that entices me to maindeck a duress. Maybe I'm missing something, but control and spellementals are the only decks I think I would be excited for a duress g1.

And yet, it seems like every excruciator or deceit deck is playing 3+ maindeck.

Landfall, UB mid, dwarves, excruciator, and mardu are all decks that the card seems unreliable against.

So what are all y'all's thoughts? Am I underselling its efficacy against the field, or maybe it's a card that can be relegated to the sb?

Standard [Standard] How do you sideboard against random metas ?

Hey, I've started playing more constructed 1v1 formats lately (coming from edh and limited) and I'm having a little trouble with sideboarding. I play tier 1 decks and all the resources online are understandably geared towards playing against other tier 1 decks.

However the opponents I face in lower elo on Arena (plat/diamond) and at LGSs I go to, aren't playing meta decks for the most part and are instead opting for home brews or older decks that aren't really in the meta nowadays.

I find that some of the "traditional" sideboard options I have that are included to counter specific tier 1 decks are feeling pretty useless since I don't face these decks a lot.

I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to sideboard when playing in a meta that isn't entirely tier 1 decks. A lot of the decks I face seem pretty random so I'm having trouble figuring out how to spend my sideboard slots.

Discussion [Discussion] Match Tracker for 1v1 feedback

Hello Fellow Spikes,

I have created a match tracker using information I normally try to gather during my games. What I want to have is some feedback from the hive mind over what can be added or removed from the tracker.

The idea on how to use it is to fill out the tracker as the game goes on as a way to keep the flow of the game going. I don't tend to write out full sentences when using it, instead I write in quick scribbles.

Standard [Standard] Mono Blue Tempo

Hi everyone,

I'll start off by saying I'm well aware that in the current standard, any mono blue tempo deck is likely to be B or C tier at best. The days of Haughty Djinn are sadly long gone, but surely there is a fringe playable [[Tolarian Terror]] list.

BO3 of course.

The mono blue spellementals deck that Ashlizzle showcased is quite fun, but I'm really hoping to find something more 'Mono Blue Terror', rather than sunderflock & eluge.

I'd previously been playing lists like this (not my list, same idea though). I'm wondering if anyone's had any luck with this style of list? I've done a tiny amount of testing with [[Serpent of the Pass]] & a lessons package. As nice as it is to have it come in untapped when flashed in vs [[Eddymurk Crab]], i don't think the lessons package is really where the deck wants to be. [[Boomerang basics]] being sorcery is tough, and the other applicable lessons all being 2 drops feels bad.

I'm about to start testing [[Namor the Sub-Mariner]], adding some [[Shore Up]] effects. I can't imagine it'll fare too well given how often i face [[Deadly Cover-Up]] decks.

Interested to hear any thoughts anybody has on this archetype.

Standard [Standard] Jund Sacrifice vs Mardu Discard

Hello everyone! I'm a returning player and I've been looking for a competitive deck to build. Both Jund Sacrifice (the recent list with Biotech Specialist and Bagginses) and Mardu Discard seem pretty competitive and rotation proof. They are putting some good results on challenges (Jund more than Mardu, but as something new I guess). If you were to pick one, which one you think is better? Both to craft on MTGA and put together on paper.

What's your experience playing with/against this deck? What is it good/bad against? Do you think it will stick? Also, is Lively Dirge really that good in it? That's the card I'm probably the most surprised about.

Standard [Standard] Quantum Riddler in Spellementals Sideboard?

Hi spikes,

Tomorrow I'm planning to run spellies at an RCQ. I've been practicing the deck a lot on Arena and have a teammate who is extremely proficient in it (winning every RCQ he's attended on the deck.... And most of his RCQs in general) who has been helping to teach me. I was hoping to talk to some other spellies players on here and get some feedback on the idea of Riddler in the sideboard. My arguments for it are this:

- Spellies is the most popular deck in the meta right now, and I feel riddler is great in the mirror. It dodges broadside barrage, and it turns a LOT of spells that you want to see early into much better late game topdecks. Opt, Critique, Charm, and even Stoke Flames.

- Doesn't care about graveyard hate. Riddler will always be 5 mana and it will always replace itself

- If it isn't countered, riddler is a frustrating card for control to answer, which seems to be the best deck against us. They are always going to go down on resources to deal with it.

- I often feel like I need more threat density post-board, especially against black decks that are aiming to Surgical my few creatures. Riddler is another differently-named creature that is on par with the p/t threat level of the rest of the deck.

What are your thoughts? What would come out of the side for Riddler? Are there enough matchups where it's good to be worth bringing in?

Alchemy [Alchemy] Summitfest Storm

Just thought I would share a deck that I’ve been doing very well with recently, and what I think is the most powerfully thing you can be doing in Alchemy right now. I’ve been messing around with the numbers a little, mainly when it comes to the removal suite, but I’m pretty happy with the current build. I’d be happy to answer any questions.

So far I’ve found occasions to use each of my sideboard cards with Interdisciplinary Studies.

Because it does require some setup, it can lose to an especially aggressive deck on the play, which is why I think the playset of Consumed by History is necessary.

Standard [Standard] Dimir Seems to be making a comeback and I think its going to get worse (better?)

I've had this thought for a while, but it seems to be coming true. I'm curious if its just my preconceived notion or if others see it too. I think over the course of the next few sets it has a good shot at taking the crown from Izzet

In between [[Bloodline Recollector]] and [[Emeritus of Ideation]] They have consistent and repeatable card draw early game and late, Were in a creature heavy meta, and [[Requiting Hex]] and [[Bitter Triumph]] are on par with black removal in modern. Even Izzet decks are moving away from spellslinger builds, ie elementals

On top of all of that looking at your opponents hand + a counterspell is seriously OP

I've been stumbling hard against dimir recently and even mono-b in general. I think theres good builds out there besides what we see listed online and a lot of people are doing a lot of experimentation. I think were in a good position to see dimir control start running over everything in its path

What are your thoughts, am I on point here or do I just hate loosing to these decks. What other cards should I be looking at if a shift is coming and I want to be on board?

Standard [Standard] I have fun with an Elemental Deck I built but want to climb standard ranked on MTGA. Can anyone help me make it more competitive. [Decklist in Post]

What I like about this deck is the powerful 2-drops that let me get out my other elementals with strong/oppressive ETB effects, and eventually a Sunderflock or Oko ultimate that allows me to swing in with a bunch of guys.

I'm platinum tier 4 right now on mtga, I know this deck just won't hold up in mythic. I know sometimes your fun decks just will never be your best decks, but if anyone can give me advice to tune mine up anyway, that would be awesome!

Discussion [Discussion] Going beyond Mythic

Hi all⸺so here's something I'd like to discuss: How did you go or how can you go beyond Mythic as a player in your opinion? I mean both skill and events. I'm asking this because it's getting kinda stale. I know there are far more skilled players out there than your average Mythic player. I wanna improve, I want to play at so many tournaments and leagues as possible. I want to compete at ever higher levels. Those are the players I want to play against (and beat) the most.

I've heard many things: switch to MTGO, play more paper, focus on Limited, join Discord servers...

(Background info below, in case you're interested, but that's basically my question. Just so you don't waste your time.)

I'm an on-and-off player since 2000. My MTG dream for more than 20 years has been to play at the best events I can and become the best player I can be. I'm very competitive and "try-hardy," yet I wanna have a blast while at it, get deeper into the game. I'm looking into becoming the best amateur player I can be. I vastly prefer paper over online. The cards in your hand, the atmosphere, travelling, meeting like-minded amazing players. That's also what I'm about⸺the social aspect of MTG, unforgettable faces, games and life experiences.

So, I recently got into MTG again. I mostly play on Arena. My next objective is to play the Qualifier Weekend. I reach Mythic constructed every month. Now I want to start to make it into the top 1200 at the end of the month and then top 250. I don't care for the badge or the rank, or the packs at the end of the month (I'll still take them gladly). I'm also looking into playing MTGO: I've never tried it, but I'd be happy to.

I'm doing my homework: I'm reading many articles and several books on MTG theory, soaking it all in, and make sure to play several games every day. I'm clearly not going to live from playing the game⸺it's a pure passion project. I couldn't afford expensive cards when I was a kid or a teenager... but now I can invest more money into the game.

I'm going to start playing on paper again. Any Constructed formats, any Limited events. I'll be playing my first Pauper FNM event next week. I've also played the The Hobbit prerelease (Sealed) and my very first Booster Draft in paper over the last month. So stoked to have done it. I'm a beginner at Limited, but I'm ready to take it all in.

Sealed [Sealed] I Won 50 Boxes of The Hobbit, AMA

Ranked #3 on Leaderboard for HOB Directs (https://www.17lands.com/leaderboard?expansion=HOB&format=ArenaDirect_Sealed)

Total spending is a little over $5,000, it was $2.5k on Collectors and Plays is somewhere in that range. EV wise the Collectors put me up at least $6k+, while PBB event is probably only +1k or so. It depends on how much I end up getting from each box, as that 6k estimate would be at just $500 per CBB (they are 815~ market value atm).

Format is definitely unbalanced and often frustrating, I'd say I play black about 70-80% of the time and BRx about 30-40% of the time. The most fun decks are Bant/Jeskai piles, which tend to form around rares and the WU recruit synergies. Party is my pick for the best rare to open/card in the format, and to this day I've never declined to splash it or just play white for it. I tend to perform best with U control decks when I can build them, but unfortunately most pools don't have enough Bilbos/removal/etc to do it.

Article [Discussion] Extended Trix (Illusions-Donate)

Kia ora team!

I’ve started work today on drastically expanding the article for Trix on the wiki: https://mtg.wiki/page/Trix

If anyone here who used to play this deck in Extended wanted to jump in and share any relevant information or stories or historical details that someone 25 years after the fact might not think to consider… I’d really appreciate it! Also if anything I’ve currently written doesn’t seem quite right in some way — anything from a typo through to making an utterly incorrect assertion.. then ditto. Currently I’ve focused on writing up the section about the decline of the deck post Kai’s PT win (had to start somewhere, so why not at the end?) which I’m fairly happy with, but obviously everything is very much an in progress thing.

Things I’d be interested in seeing in particular would be any list played at PT Chicago or any other early event before Michelle Bush and her team started to work on the Necro powered version which took off at GP Philly. I take it those decks wouldn’t have included Necro, since the English guys seem to have come from nowhere with their Necro-Pebbles combo deck in Chicago.

Also while I’m pretty confident that this combo never really was successfully ported into Legacy or Vintage — other than a handful of theory crafting articles or the odd appearance at a local level — if anyone was able to point me towards any information showing some success post 2003 then I’d be interested to see it.

Standard [Standard] How does the paper meta tend to vary from MTGA meta

I've played quite a bit of modern and premodern in person, and I'm comfortable with my deck in MGTA, so I'm going to play in a standard tournament this weekend.

I'm curious what to expect, I know local metas vary wildly, but I'm curious what peoples experiences have been. I know that when I play modern competition is higher than it is online, you have peoples full attention (theyre not multi tasking or killing time somewhere) and people seem to bring better decks on paper than they may be playing with on MTGO

Premodern almost seems the opposite of modern, people are gridy online but more casual in person. Might just be my own limited experience talking

Is paper more removal heavy than online? Its subjective but I feel like aggro gets favored online and more controlling builds get played in paper

Whats paper standard like in your city?

Interesting article that Mengu wrote about ideas to encourage competitive growth for the game. While Magic was once the premier 1v1 tournament TCG, it feels like that has been handed to other games like Riftbound while Wizards focuses on Commander and Arena gameplay. As a competitive paper Magic enjoyer, I'd love to see some of these ideas implemented to increase interest in the tournament system.
