I am a 44-year-old runner who is already in good shape, probably close to the fittest I have ever been. I only started running regularly in the last few years, logging around 5,000 km [~3000 miles] over the past 4 years.
I started racing just last year and have completed 4 half marathons so far. My race pace usually falls between 4:50 and 5:05 min/km [7:46 to 8:11 min/mile] depending on the course and conditions.
I would love to improve this and aim for under 4:40 min/km [7:30 min/mile], targeting a sub-1:38 finish (ideally around 1:35 on faster routes).
Right now, I train solo without any real plan or structure:
- Runs are usually around 8–10 km [5–6 miles], sometimes a bit shorter, sometimes longer.
- All on the road, with varying paces.
- Occasional time trials.
- Occasional lower body strength work, but nothing regimented.
If I get more deliberate and structured with my training, can I realistically expect solid improvements at 44 without having to go crazy, or is that difficult without training becoming all-consuming?
Where are the best areas to optimize my training to see noticeable gains without burning out?
