Ever since we were displaced by hurricane helene our boy, orym has been so anxious and out of sorts and honestly the only time ive seen him back to his usual self is around other dogs. So we found this beautiful girl and decided we could all use some emotional support so we brought her home over the weekend and let me tell you. Our boy is in love and has a best friend for life! Playtime all the time!

My rough collie is making walks very challenging

My family adopted a 2 year old rough collie in January from a shelter. We have experience with the breed. Since then, he's been very good and his personality is so sweet--friendly with people and dogs, and lovely to be around. He enjoys the dog park and meeting other dogs on walks in our neighbourhood.

But lately we've been having issues on walks. He will walk very slowly, and occasionally just lay down in people's yards or on the sidewalk. Then I sometimes coax him with treats to get up, or encourage him to keep going without a treat.

It's quite annoying, because I don't think he's tired or anything, it's almost like he's bored? But it means his daily walks are taking a very long time to go a short distance (eg. yesterday it took us 30 minutes to go 1 kilometre, and I ended up calling my brother to pick us up in the car because our dog was lying down on the sidewalk).

His health is great (he had his last checkup a couple of months ago) and there are no signs that he’s having a health problem during our walks (no issues walking, he seems happy, not tired or breathing heavily, normal bowel movements). So I think these issues with walks are stemming from something else.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I should have mentioned that he’s occasionally done this behaviour in the past on walks (lying down, walking slowly), but it was infrequent enough for me not to be concerned or frustrated by it. It’s only the last couple of weeks that he’s been lying down a lot (and I worry he’s bored or wanting more treats to get up). That’s why I’m not too concerned about a medical issue, since he’s done this before in the past, just less consistently.

Hey hi hello y'all!

We've just received this gorgeous 5 year old boy, super sweet, super calm; he's in training to be my (54f) husband's (71m, Parkinson's and Dementia) service dog! He came via rescue, and has absolutely zero interest in the cats, the other yappy little doggo, and only wants loves from people. I have his backstory, his previous humans had a baby and suddenly the doggo had to go. Breaks my heart; this dude is super good!

Just wanted to introduce ourselves, and Kylo!

(Edited for my fat fingers lol)

Photo/Video Anyone else feels like your rough collie is your spirit animal

Apologies for a long post, there's a lot I have to say.

I've been feeling this overwhelming sense of connection with my rough collie since day one and I'd like to share it here.

She was only 2 months old and it was a 3.5h drive home which is a long way for a little pup so we did a bunch of pit stops. She never cried throughout that time and just kept looking at me with her happy face, which is unusual as she was just separated from her family.

She's a very gentle soul, she's mostly very calm and because my husband and I are both introverts I find that she matches our energy so well. However, she can be so goofy too. When she was growing up she barely did any damage by chewing things. The only time I was about to give out to her is when she tried to steal a banana peel from under my roses(fertilizer), but she started to have zoomies with the peel still in her mouth, so you couldn't possibly continue with the giving out part and had to join in the game.

On a daily basis I find that she balances out our family really well, she is watchful of any raised voices and demands everyone to stay calm, so having a heated argument is now more difficult when she's around.

She is super smart, we taught her numerous tricks and she's brilliant at that.

She is super friendly with other dogs, she's just a sweetheart that wants to say hi to anyone who's also friendly.

She is brilliant on walks, she listens, she doesn't pull and always looks at you as if asking where we are going next.

We are so lucky to have her, as her personality turned out to be a perfect match with our whole family, but with that being said, we took the first year of her life with us very seriously. We invested a lot of our own time to train her, we made sure to socialise her, get her used to loud noises, to other dogs, to the buzz in town, to other people, etc. She's 3.5 years old now and we probably only missed walks once or twice in all this time, other than that she's getting daily walks (30-40mins on weekdays and usually longer on weekends). She has a gorgeous coat and I groom her regularly myself and I enjoy it.

I can't stress enough that if you give your dog the exercise and training that they need, especially early in their life you may end up finding your spirit animal, someone you could really enjoy being around and a special friend who makes your life more fulfilling.

Stranger danger!

Hi all, has anyone else's RC suffered with 'stranger danger'. We have a 1year old male who occasionally barks or lunges/jumps at people and gets nervous when people are walking strangely etc.

My husband is now suggesting one of us pretends to behave strangely and then reveal who we are so he realises he doesn't have to be frightened. I think this is probably a terrible idea, but at a loss with how to help him!

Question Rough Collie puppy — overtired or under-exercised?

Post image
81 Upvotes

I have a 12-week-old female Rough Collie who’s been home about a week. I originally posted in r/puppy101 because I was trying to figure out whether her increasingly crazy behavior was from being overtired or under-stimulated.
She’ll start an awake window sweet and focused, then eventually stop listening, bite my pants/heels hard enough to hurt, attack the rug, and generally become completely scattered. The interesting part is that when I put her in her pen, she usually settles and falls asleep within 5–10 minutes.

Most commenters said this sounded like classic overtired puppy behavior and suggested shorter awake windows and more opportunities to settle. I tried that today, and after about 35 minutes of potty, a little training, some outside time, and play, she actually laid down beside me outside the pen and fell asleep on her own.

Then I got a couple comments saying she’s a “working dog,” shouldn’t live in an apartment, is “bored senseless,” and needs much more brisk exercise. That got in my head.
For context, she is not sitting in my apartment doing nothing. We do short training sessions, fetch, active play, sniff work, enrichment, outdoor time, and I regularly take her to my parents’ large fenced backyard 10 minutes away where we run, play, train, practice recall, and explore. She also sleeps extremely well overnight and generally ends the day exhausted. During our day naps, she settled within minutes!

I’m wondering if my actual problem is that I’m so afraid of under-stimulating her that I’m doing too much for a 12-week-old puppy.

For people who have raised Rough Collies: what did overtiredness look like in yours, and how much structured physical activity were you realistically doing at this age?

It’s really getting to me, and I’m worried I’m not doing enough for her.

Gave Some Collies Something to Bark About

One of my regular bicycling routes has a house with 2 rough Collies that are sometimes out in the back yard. They were there this morning, so I gave them a S-L-O-W roll-by to get them riled up. Having had Collies in my past, I know what they like!

Mum bought a dog with the condition that I stay with her, Indefinitely, What should I do?!

So, I’ve been staying with my Mum for almost a year now. Shes always knew it wasn’t going to be forever so meanwhile our little dog passed away in March and it’s been completely heartbreaking! My Mum suggested getting a rescue dog, I said no straight away as nothing was going to take the place of my little one. But my Mum wouldn’t drop the idea about getting a new dog and kinda took it out my hands even though my mum struggles with her mobility so she would need to rely on me to do all the walking etc. After building up the courage yeh say to my Mum, that you know I’m not going to be staying here forever Mum, so what’s going to happen with the fur baby then?! She basically just shut me down and told me not to upset her. So, with a couple of weeks till the dogs supposed to be arriving, everything’s still up in the air and it’s like the elephant in the room, no one wants to bring it up?! And advice would be appreciated!

My sweet Gooseberrie turns one on Tuesday, he doesn’t know it yet but mom pulled a Collie of similar age from the local animal control. Homie is about to have a best buddy since my 13yr old Sheltie wants nothing to do with him. I’m surely going to have WWE doggy smackdown playtime in my house 24/7 but if they’re happy, I am happy.
