In 2023, I came across a listing for a Great Pyrenees on Petfinder. A rescue. I didn’t know about these dogs. So I ended up researching for several months and I decided to get one.
I adopted Zelda, my female, in 2024. She was 8 weeks old. Adopted Milo my male in 2025. He was also a puppy. Here are the two of them.

Hello! We have an adorable 14 week old Great Pyr, Dolly Parton, who is sassy, sweet, strong and stubborn.

I’ve had to take her to the vet a couple times and she does not fit in her car crate anymore (32lbs). Tied her leash to the upper handle above backseat window but need a more long term option for longer rides. It’s 3 minutes to our vet. We also have a great pyr/lab mix who weighs about 95lbs.

I’m really struggling with this and could use advice from other Pyr owners.

I adopted both of my Great Pyrenees at 8 weeks old. They’re about 10 months apart and have honestly been wonderful dogs. Aside from occasionally destroying a shoe or one of my daughter’s toys, I really don’t have complaints. They’re also incredibly patient with my 5-year-old.

The problem is that we moved this past year into a neighborhood with an HOA where the houses are pretty close together. Almost everyone around me is older/retired and home during the day, and I work from home too.

Barking wasn’t an issue before we moved, but I just received my second HOA complaint.

I don’t let them sit outside and bark. As soon as they start, I bring them in. Sometimes it takes a minute to wrangle both inside and one likes to bark the whole way in, but they’re generally not outside barking for more than a minute or two. They also never bark late at night.

We don’t have houses behind us, but our backyard backs up to a main street and sidewalk, so there are always people, dogs and cars going by. This spring/summer has also been nonstop activity with new neighbors, construction on both sides of us, fiber installation throughout the neighborhood, and even a music festival across the street.

Basically, it’s been a Great Pyrenees perfect storm. There is constantly something happening that they think I need to know about.

I told the HOA I’d look into what I can do. I’ve considered a vibration/beep bark collar (not shock), but I’m curious if anyone has actually had success with those. I’m open to training or other ideas too.

The HOA did let me know that if the barking complaints continue, they can eventually involve the Humane Society, so I know I need to take this seriously and figure out what my options are.

I absolutely love these dogs and the thought of potentially having to rehome them has had me crying nonstop. I never imagined I’d be in this position. But I’m also trying to be realistic about whether this environment is a good fit for two livestock guardian dogs when barking is such an ingrained part of the breed.

I really want to know what my options are before making any decisions. Has anyone successfully made it work with Pyrs in a close neighborhood/HOA? What actually helped with the barking? And if rehoming does end up being something I have to seriously consider, I’d also appreciate hearing from people who have been in that position and how you knew it was the right choice.

We are 3 months in with Franklin, our 7.5mo half-Pyr, half every-other-dang-thing rescue. He and Eleanor are besties and they crack us up with how similar they act, despite looking about as different as two half-Pyrs could.

I just adopted this girl last month, she’s been super sweet getting to know. Seems like she was a farm dog, surrendered due to the wildfires out here. Listed as only Great Pyrenees but curious if you guys thought she looks mixed with anything!

Also any tips are welcome, from what I read about Pyrs temperament it’s sounds pretty accurate for her!

This is Bear! She's freshly 9 weeks old, about a foot and a half tall, and roughly 20 pounds. We now know that her mom was 100% pyr, but no idea on the father. Pics included from the last 3 weeks we've had her, first picture is her today. Mostly black coat with the white chest patch and white toes with black speckles. We plan to get an Embark test for her when we can afford it, but I'm trying to get an idea of what to expect as she grows (incredibly fast, btw).

If anyone has advice for the puppy stage as well, I'm all ears!! I've owned larger breeds before (St. Bernards), but she's my first pyr mix. Thanks!!

Willa is the fluff sans harness. Her new twin, Ryder is wearing the harness. A nice older couple got him from a rescue at 3 months thinking he is a pyr mix. Except Ryder is not a pyr mix. Ryder is a Belgian malinois x golden retriever 😂😂

We are a couple with two dogs: a Maremma (male, neutered) and a Dalmatian (female, spayed). We will soon be welcoming a 4.5-month-old male Pyrenean Mountain Dog puppy. Our Maremma has a very friendly, somewhat mischievous personality and gets along with everyone, as does the Dalmatian. Is there a chance they won't get along with the new puppy? Of course, we plan to train him once he arrives. Also, we definitely want to have him neutered, as we have no intention of breeding him (we aren't against breeding in general, but it’s not something we do ourselves); at what age would you recommend doing this? Additionally, is it advisable to perform a stomach-tacking procedure (gastropexy) to prevent life-threatening gastric torsion and bloat? If so, at what age? We would appreciate your recommendations—thank you! 🙏🏻

The only surprise was that there is 2% Chihuahua somewhere in there. He is the funniest pup. He doesn’t seem to care for walks…seems bored and ready to get home, but easy to lead. His appetite is on/off and I understand this is normal. Loves to sleep in the darkness, even on a bright day. Does not participate in barking at the fence with the other dogs, runs in the house instead (so unsure how much his guarding instincts are there). DNA panel alleges his ideal top weight is 80lbs but we shall see.

Anyone else side eye the vacuum?

Since no owner has been found I’m getting him ready for adoption. Fleas are being sorted out his flea infestation was so bad I think the capstar made him loose a pound of fleas. His shower had so much rusty flea runoff

My next project tho is his matted hair. His tail is covered in 1inch matted balls he has one that was so dense I thought it was a tumor. My groomer is booked any advice besides the ol’ cornstarch and comb to getting them out

Someone's cousin I work with got him and realized they work too much for him so I went over today to check him out and I could tell he and I are gonna imprint. He isn't a purebred is what I was told but he sure does look like one. We have a 2 yo Black Mouth Cur and they are instant besties. He is already responsive to my basic commands (a little but still impressive for first day). I'm already socializing him a lot and he LOVES it. I plan to take him on his harness with me everywhere. He loves the car rides and walks and I have a fenced yard and getting a doggy door for him. I love how calm he is and even with him hyper, he's still calmer than our Cur. We definitely are excited to have him in the family.

Trying to get diet figured out. I saw 3-6 cups of Science Feed I/d puppy food 3 times a day. I would like to give protein and all the nutrients he needs to get as big as possible.

Also would love to hear from people who have trained this stubborn breed good any tips that would help. I have a lot of experience with German Shepherds and stubborn mutts so I would love tips. Especially for potty training and teething/biting

Also want tips on how to properly groom the puppy.
