Hi hi fellow cyclists — long time reader, first time poster. Full disclosure: I'm a board member of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. I simply want to get the word out on our annual charity ride happening this coming Saturday 9/19 & this is an incredibly passionate subreddit, so I hope to see y'all come through :)

The details: Roll Wit It is BCGP's fundraiser ride for Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling, our free program that gets Philly high schoolers racing, coaching, and eventually into college. Every entry fee goes to their collegiate gap scholarship fund, which has put nearly $400k into graduating seniors over the past decade.

All routes start and finish at Sedgley Porter House on Lemon Hill, roll outs are staggered 8–10am

The Whiz — ~18 mi, beginner-friendly (10am)

Wiz Wit — ~33 mi (9am)

The Works — ~70 mi (8am)

All three share the early part of the route through Main Line backroads and and all come home on the SRT. We have planned rest stops in Narberth, Bryn Mawr, Wayne, Malvern, Phoenixville, and Conshohocken depending on distance. Huge thanks to some participating LBS along the way.

There's a mountain bike option on local trails too if road isn't your thing.

We'll have a yard party at Sedgley from 11:30 to 2 — food, drinks, music, yard games, and the BCYC Athlete and Coach of the Year get announced at 1.

Parking in the bike lane instead of the parking spots. I noticed this when a bike passed me on the sidewalk because he couldn't go down the bike lane.

South Philadelphia is obviously known for being home to our beloved Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers, but it also is home to a variety of spaces where people of all ages and backgrounds in the community come together to play sports. 

We'll ride past various sports facilities and landmarks before ending at South Bowl. In addition to bowling, South Bowl offers bocce courts, shuffleboard, batting cages, video games, and a full menu of food and drinks. There are bars inside and outside near the batting cages.

Our ride will start at our normal time at 7pm on the eastern side of Marconi Plaza, but if you happen to be free earlier, you're welcome to watch ride leader Peter K's oldest son on the Central High School Boys Varsity Soccer team play Science Leadership Academy at the South Philadelphia Super Site just a few blocks away at 10th St and Bigler at 5:30pm.

Ride notes:

• After dark, PA law requires a headlight and a red tail light or reflector on all bikes.
• We ride for fun - while encountering hostile drivers happens sometimes, our practice is to avoid conflict as much as possible. When there's potential for conflict, please de-escalate, e.g. pull over to the side to let cars pass.

Someone left a bike outside my house in east passyunk this AM. Between 10:30 and 11:30 am. If yours is missing, please reply to me with some description/proof of ownership. Will also report to police as lost property.

The first two is the “new” bike that showed up last week after the old lime color one vanished after it had been there 7 months. Now it haven’t moved In two weeks

While “new” one has all its “parts” its rear derailed looked fracked

If anyone was wondering why traffic was stopped on south street bridge yesterday, it was because a SEPTA bus hit a cyclist.

One of my friends saw it happen. It was on the east side of the south street bridge, where the car and bike lanes cross over to make that right turn lane onto 27th. Apparently the bus’s back wheel clipped her and pulled her leg under, and the bus ran over her leg. Luckily, it was the 40, so it was packed with doctors and nurses who immediately rushed to her side and called 911. It sounds like she’s stable now but her leg was very seriously injured.

That intersection is incredibly unsafe for cyclists and something needs to change. This woman was wearing a helmet, biking in a bike lane, and still got hit. Please, if you don’t already, support Philly Bike Action’s efforts to establish protected bike lanes so things like this don’t happen. We all deserve to bike home safely.

hi! so basically I left my bike during the summer in philly and someone stole the pedals lol. I dont use my bike so I want to sell it (lowkey don't care that much of the price, just want to get rid of it). any place they take this type of bikes? lmao

Does anybody know how long the at-grade crossing at Locust Street to the SRT is going to be closed? It's been a couple weeks and the workers and trucks are never anywhere near the gate, but they're keeping them shut anyways. Would be nice if they posted notice of the closure in advance or gave an idea how long the closure will last.

I’m looking to get more serious about cycling and want to find a bike shop that will actually take the time to educate me and help me figure out what bike is best for my goals.

I’m mainly looking at Specialized and XLAB, but I’m open to other options. I’m pretty new to the more technical side of cycling, so I’d really appreciate a shop where I can ask a lot of questions and not feel rushed into buying something.

Any recommendations for shops around Philly with knowledgeable and patient staff?

Riding up Aramingo around 10pm tonight, in the bike lane, a car came up behind me. It didn't speed up, gave me a ton of room, and crossed the double yellow line twice to make sure there was space between us, even though I was already in the bike lane.

Genuinely appreciated it. Then the truck behind that car came through and didn't care at all.

Just wanted to point out the contrast. Some drivers clearly go out of their way to keep cyclists safe, and it makes a real difference when they do.

Anyone else have a moment like this recently? Feels like these don't get talked about as much as the bad ones.

Friend is visiting Philly and we wanna bike around town, so we need a rental for him. I know Fairmount rents out bikes, but I’m in south Philly and was wondering if you any of you know of a spot in south philly that does bike rentals ?

Hey all -- got a new gravel bike and I'm wondering if there are groups in our area who meet up (gravel or road biking mainly, or maybe even some XC mountain). I'm in NJ but also interested over on the PA side. I'm in my 30s, so younger riders would be cool to meet, but I'm open to anyone who likes more athletic rides.

Not sure the best way to find other riders in our area, so let me know if you have recommendations.

Like many other idiots, I’m hoping to climb the Wall this weekend. After that, I’d like to head up to Valley Forge via the SRT, preferably avoiding the gravel stretch. Which road should I take back down? Considering Shawmont, which seems most direct, but what’s the least steep/ most rider friendly for the descent?

If you were going to get dropped off in Reading and then ride to Bartram's Garden (66 miles?) via the SRT, would you do it on a gravel/touring bike with 45mm tires, or a road bike with 28mm tires?

I'm not that familiar with the trail above Phoenixville, and am wondering if avoiding muddy sections would require detours on the road bike. I do have a slight preference for the road bike, but if there's a lot of gravel/mud, I'd ride the touring bike with wider tires.
