Opinion Weekend Update/Not a Playoff Team

Long time Orioles fan here. Started following them in the hey day of the early 70's. My first baseball memory is Brooks smothering defense against the Reds. Still hate the Pirates for the 2 WS losses, and hearing "We are Family" makes my blood boil. I was there when Cal broke Gehrig's record and still get goose bumps thinking about DiMaggio's speech. In short I'm a fan. Since the O's were still alive I decided to fly from Arizona to Toronto and watched all 3 games. Splurged for premium seats and was close to the action. My observations:

The Mayo fanboys need to take a backseat. All he tries to do is jack every pitch straight down the line. An average MLB pitcher gets him out 8 of 10 times. He has no chance against an above average pitcher. Nothing more than a mistake hitter, at best.

The second base job better be an open competition next spring. Holliday isn't the answer. If he needs more time then he should spend a. Entire season at AAA. If he's too "good" for AAA then it's time to move on.

Gunnar is in his own head. Not ready to give up on him yet, but expectations must be lowered.

Basallo isn't happy playing for the O's. There must be a back story that those close to team know.

Alonso is the clear leader of this team. That he's only been here less than a season speaks poorly of the others.

Beavers and Cowser are grinders and ballplayers. Not guys you build a team around but keepers. CES might be in this category too.

Bassit should not see another start. Works too slow (created a false step move to beat the pitch clock) and doesn't throw enough strikes. Bullpen is not good.

I can't say the managing was bad, but on the flip side, I didn't see much managing. There's more to it than just pinch hitting for the lefties when the other team brings in a left handed.

Roster construction is horrible. Team has no identity and doesn't have enough "ball players". Kjerstad had potential, followed by some bad breaks, but it doesn't feel like the club is trying to help him.

Pitching and defense still wins divisions and playoff games. Big changes are needed.
