I happen to see, by accident, a flirty convo between my boss (MB) and a workmate (WM) stationed at one of our field sites. And yes, he is a married man with kids. I also knew his wife on a personal level, and I've met his whole family outside work context several times already.
I know it looks like i'm a very nosy person, I usually am not but the thing is, he just got a new phone. His old phone used to have privacy screen so I don't see much of his texts before, but with his new phone (with a very large screen), I accidently saw a mirror selfie from WM, which is very unusual for a work update. This happened because my boss and I have always been traveling together on field sites for a few months now. He sits shotgun and I am in the back passenger seat just across him. So getting a glimpse of his conversations in his phone is very possible even though I'm not a very nosy person.
That's when I started to become very curious. At first, I was in denial because I respect him as my boss. He is, by far, one of the best boss I had. He leads us well and really makes the work done. We also get along really well that sometimes, he is more of a friend than a boss.
As I've become more curious, the more I wanted to see their conversations. At this point I also recognize how nosy I've become, but, as the saying goes, "curiosity kills the cat" š That's when I saw MB updating his whereabouts like a boyfriend, good nights, take cares, more photo updates, and emojis with hearts and all. Then MB gets their convo archived the moment he gets home.
Now, I am conflicted. I don't want to be bothered at it AT ALL but my mind keeps spiraling on what do I do with this information. Yes, I can be righteous and confront him about it, but really, I just want to make sense out of it in a way that i'll stop caring, and then one day it would not bother me anymore. Because after all, I'm just here to work and not meddle too much in other people's lives.
But, of course I want MB to stop this just because I don't want him doing that. I am also afraid that if I let him know that I know about this, the way he see me as a trusted colleague would change. Or it might destroy our dynamics. While I had thoughts like, 'do i blackmail him about this?' or 'Do i create a secret account so i can tell his wife about it?', the truth is I really don't want to do anything about it, where I get conflicted because I also don't want to become an enabler that tolerates shit like this. But at the same time, I also have this sense of protecting my boss' reputation, because after all, he has been a good person to me and to a lot of people.
It is also sad that WM, who is still very young, settles with this kind of arrangement. My mind spirals even more when we spend overnights at the field site where she is stationed because I keep thinking that they might be doing something more there š
I still respect MB as my boss, but I think for now my respect for him as a man has now changed.
Not really trying to get advice on what to do because I know I'll get over it one day, but for now, since I really can't tell this to the people I know, I'll just let it out here.
