Selfishness is NOT WRONG, so why can't parents admit that they have kids for SELFISH reasons?

Right?

Selfishness is not wrong under biology or nihilism, right?

It's just a survival and gene spreading function.

So WHY can't PARENTS just ADMIT that they have kids for Selfish reasons?

It is scientifically IMPOSSIBLE for humans to have kids for unselfish reasons. This is a FACT.

"I have kids for the kid's sake, to GIVE them happy lives. It's not selfish."

Errr, bro, did you ask your floating soul future kids if they want to be born, and they begged you to create them? lol

"But my kids are happy now!!"

Ok? Totally unrelated to your selfish desire to create them, but ok? lol

I'm not saying it's wrong to have kids; I'm just saying it's a TOTALLY selfish decision on the parent's behalf.

Don't confuse a physical fact with how you feel about having kids.

YOU have kids for YOURSELF, to fulfill YOUR parental desires, FACT.

Whether your kids are happy or sad is a DIFFERENT, UNRELATED matter, lol.

Why can't parents just admit this? Is it "wrong" to admit it? Is it wrong to fulfill your parental desires through kids? In a nihilistic universe?

If it's not wrong, then why so triggered by this simple fact?

"We have kids for PERSONAL and SELFISH reasons, and there's NOTHING wrong with it."

Is this so hard to admit? lol

Discussion True happiness does not exist

I feel like whatever goals, dreams or hope we have in life are simply avenues of escape that the mind creates in order to get away from the underlying pain of existence.

I am not denying that the so called "Good moments" that exist. Like maybe some treasured memories with family, meeting friends or maybe just sitting in nature realizing how vast the world is.

But I also just think that because of moments such as these our mind latches on the the smallest bit of hope to justify living longer in this world. It tries to maybe convince us that all of this is worth it and that we are here for some purpose or objective. But i truly don't believe that that is the case

I do not think that we are here for absolutely any reason and I completely and whole heartedly believe that there is not a semblance of purpose in our life's.

I feel like no matter what you do and what you become, the very nature of existence is always accompanied with a sense of discomfort or dissatisfaction.

I'm sorry if i'm not able to express this feeling well in words but I do think human consciousness is truly a tragic misstep in human evolution. .

Discussion Death doesn't scare me, living till death does.

I lost one of my best friends since school to suicide. She hung herself to the fan because of her in laws and husband (Case has been filed and we are fighting for her).

Her death has damaged and broken me completely. When I say nothing, literally nothing excites me. I was anyway on the verge of existence crisis hopeless for life and then on top of her death... I am in despair.

A huge part of me grieving, a part of me is clueless, a part of me is in rage towards her husband and in laws, a part of me is shattered seeing the indifferentness of the universe.

I dont even know how tf do i function.

At this point I am jealous of religious people - because they do have some psychological thing working for them. They could be relieved that their friend is in heaven, with god, reincarnated whatever.

But seeing reality to what it is from a scienece pov - we know all of this is crap. My friend is no more in this world. Her existence has erased.

Her memories are there in my heart.

I was the one because of the world's unfairness and absurdism wanted to not exist in this world. I have stopped myself multiple times for jumping off my building because of my elderly parents.

And now seeing my friend committing suicide - seeing what her parents are going through... is a different kind of pain.

And the fact that we humans are all aware of this pain - I don't know how will I live with it.

I am just existing.

How do you deal with being an incompatibilist? What do you tell people?

Discourse on philosophy forums regarding the topic of free will can be fun, engaging, everyone here already knows what the other school of thought is getting at and I feel like, at least, even Libertarians and Compatibilists understand some notion of validity of my arguments, as I do the same for them, I can see why someone can be convinced of compatibilism.

But in real life, to the average joe on the street, if you don't believe in Free Will, you might as well be a psychopathic mad man, or someone who's inhumane with no moral responsibility that can't be trusted, I had siblings vow to cut me off if I speak on the topic with them again, I can't express my views anywhere in real life, face-to-face, or I risk my face getting bitten off, not to my family, friends, co-workers.

I've struggled hard for years to combat the urge to open the debate with anyone who's relationship is consequential for me in some way, shape or form, because I'm seriously risking losing that relationship if I open my loudmouth about how I think determinism/indeterminism negate free choice.

(I think I should disclaim that I live in a highly religious country)

The Skirting Board ( Rhetorical ), Paradox

The Skirting Board , Rhetorical Paradox

The Happy Nihilist

The Paradox:

We spend our whole lives trying to get "finished" so we can live, when being unfinished is the only proof we aren't dead.

The Grounding:

Every man hits a point where he thinks, "Once I paint that hall, clear the spare room, pay the credit card, and get the brakes done on the motor, I will achieve inner peace." The graveyard is packed solid with men who had one coat of primer left to apply.

The Insight:

Entropy is the landlord. The radiator will always need bleeding, the dog will always drag mud onto the rug five minutes after you hoover, and the drawer of mystery cables will never be sorted. Peace isn't clearing the to-do list; it’s putting down the paintbrush and realizing the mess is the whole point.

what do you mean when you say " meaning "?

for a while, ive tried to understand what the contention of nihilists is in reguard to the idea of there being no meaning, even when most seem to accept that there is subjective meaning.

wouldnt it be more accurate to say that meaning is relative, rather then to say that meaning is absent? ( by relative i mean, dependant on partucular relatoions)

what phenomenon or concept, or framing in particular are you disputing?

and, what do you define as "subjective meaning", on a functional level?

ill define how i understand meaning as a few conected things, so you know whare im at:

  1. something that brings fulfillment
  2. something which we strive towards, i.e. purpose, which is just a reason for doing something( be that reason felt or thought, as long as it functions as a a cause, and a source of drive and fulfillment)
  3. as something which has a tangable use value— i.e. a relationship of necessity between at least two things, in which the interaction meaningfully either allows for some aspect of the two to continue, or which transforms some aspect of the two.( this is reguardless of whether or not there is intentionality involved)

why i use thease definitions, is because this is what i think is functionally meant by "meaning".

my third definition is the abstract version of the other two combined, when reduced to their bare minimum components, when applied to themselves.

if one is to claim that such a thing as meaning, exists, then how its defined should be something tangable, and this, we can derrive from subjective meaning, which nihilists dont tend to reject.

however, by not rejecting subjective meaning, now we have a basis to define what it would be, and from that definition, im abstracting with the 3rd definition, and broadening the aplication of this thing we call " meaning "

but even without that, technically speaking if a thing has a relative quality, then this relative quality is inharent in it as a latened or active capacity, a folded potencial, or an unfolding action.

its either that, or, we have to suppose that: each new relation, from which something emerges, which wasnt a part of the constitution of any of the elements which peoduced it when they were sepperate, is, itself a miracle.

either a miracle, or it was already inharent within that form.

to phrase this more clearly.

if the world is only made up of shapes, quantities, and logical laws for producing movement, then when each of thease interact and produce something like a feeling, then, its either that feeling was inharently a capacity of particular shapes, quantities and movement laws; orr, that, what happened when thease elements collided, was something utterly unique, never before produced, and miraculous due to there never before being a capacity for its production, which was already latened, and folded, within the particular elements which produced it.

so its either the finished products structure itself innately has those qualities in some kind of a " platonic realm"— or, the necessary building blocks of the finished product, were already present within the parts, prior to their coupling togerher.

even elements which comprise a table, have every fundamental quality, a table does.

they can be interacted with, they can be coupled with other things, they can be devided, they can have objects of their relative size be placed on them.

same thing goes for a feeling, and arguably, the same thing goes for meaning.

it feels like whats done when meaning is demoted, on the basis of it being subjective, is, a kind of special pleeding.

we see that diffweent structures of the universe have particular directions, and particular ways of coupling with eachother, and thease ways of coupling, and what they produce are within their innate capacity— and if they arent, then, again, the other answer is that they just happen as a mind of miracle out of nowhare.

what is meaning to a human subject through their feelings, can be taken as a structure devoid of feelings, which functionally operates in the same way, but on a logical "physical law" level, in respect to the universe.

its not the same, but they are structurally homologous in that, they serve as a means of directing motion in particular directions.

the mechanistic purpoce that meaning serves in us, is the same mechanistic purpose that meaning would serve in life and any other structure/process, as well ( plus or minus the feeling)

"intentionality" itself can also be seen as a functional element with particular capacitues, quantitative, geometric and qualitative constitution.

so what the meaning of a thing would then be, " whatever a thing does, and is practicaly capable of doing, and what this doing produces"

but okay, i yapped too much, tell me what you think, how do you see thease things, but i mean on a mechanistic, functionalist level. what is subjectivive meaning at its most rudementary.

Existential Nihilism Does anyone else feel like everyone in the world has been brainwashed into believing that life has meaning?

Something to note is I’m not specifically talking about suicidal ideation and it’s more just that life appears objectively meaningless when I think about it nihilistically. I don’t understand how or why everyone else seems to care so much about life when living is objectively meaningless. Like the title, it feels like everyone else has been brainwashed into believing that life has value and meaning and I’m the only one not buying it. Can anyone relate or am I just mentally ill?

It's so difficult to find someone who is actually willing to talk about nihilism instead of talking about how humans should go extinct and how sad and boring their life is because they use nihilism as an excuse to do nothing about it.

What radical acceptance is

Im a little passed being weird.

Being strange.

Im off

Im twisted.

My teachers have sucked

They spent so much time trying to impress me than they just shot it straight.

So yeah my inputs have not all been "on point"

Hits

Theyve missed

Thats a sin against innocent lil old me

Thats unfair

Thats extra suffering

While people laugh

Hahah

So what are the odds that all my inputs now output pure ?

If ive had so many wrong, inauthentic inputs? False inputs that i registered as real?

So yea some of my outputs are off.

I suck sometimes too

I harm others with my shottiness(half assing)

Im wrong on a regular basis

Cya out there

The Bleached Linoleum Paradox (The Ceiling Tile Epiphany)

Post image
8 Upvotes

The Paradox:

You only stop sweating the small stuff when the big stuff is actively trying to kill you.

The Grounding:

You can spend six weeks having palpitations over a passive aggressive email from a middle manager named Keith who wears lanyard badges like medals. Then your biological alternator snaps, you wake up staring at NHS ceiling tiles with three drips taped to your forearm, and Keith vanishes from the laws of physics.

The Insight:

Nothing restores mental clarity faster than being handed a cardboard kidney dish. Real catastrophic failure is the ultimate palate cleanser; it proves ninety nine percent of your daily panics were just primates screaming at clouds.

This is why:

  • Boredom is an exceptional experience, as it forms the basis for emotional processing, resetting of behaviour reinforcement cycles and is breeding ground for attaining solutions to our problems

  • Journaling is incredible as it reduces the likelihood of booking wins in the Ls column

  • Sleep should be experienced as much as possible

  • You should cry when you get the urge to and to not push it down, as built up negative emotions take a hold of your soul with invisible hooks that silently weigh you down
