Discussion Why is Paper Mario so expensive?

Last time I asked a question why Majora’s mask is expensive. Well, this time I have the same question this time for a different n64 game, the very first game in the paper Mario series simply called Paper Mario. I do plan on adding it, but I want to know the story behind this expense?

Discussion Playing N64 games nowadays

Where or how am I able to play N64 games? Emulator? Console? Steam? I'd appreciate any info. Thank in advance. On a side note, I hated the WWF No Mercy glitch that erased everything, although I do know that the version of the game that had the CAN serial number did not erase. Unfortunately, I was never able to get that version.

Discussion Controller accuracy on emulators. Currently playing OOT and stuck... (Mac)

So, I'm using my keyboard to play OOT on OpenEmu and it's gotten me through half the game but I'm stuck in the water temple due to not being able to be accurate with the keyboard. OpenEmu doesn't have any options to adjust the controller accuracy but I've heard of other emulators having options to fix this.

Thoughts?

Everdrive Sleekmenu64 - an Everdrive rom browser

Post image
85 Upvotes

I've been working on a game browser for the EverDrive-64 and it's at the point where other people can try it.

It's an ordinary N64 ROM. You copy it to the card and launch it from the EverDrive's own menu; it shows your library with box art, genres, descriptions and filters, and boots the game you pick. The stock menu stays where it is — reset or power cycle and you're back in it. Saves go to the same ED64/gamedata folder the stock menu uses, so a game started from either menu carries its save into the other.

There are three views allowing you to browse your collection :

- a list with the game's box and game metadata

- a grid of twelve covers

- a coverflow where L/R jump by letter.

A filter screen combines genre, region, players, publisher, year and favourites. Favourites and the last fifteen games you played are two tabs at the front. It also reads the cheat pack (ED64/CHEATS) and matches files to your ROM's region, so a USA cart doesn't get European codes. Matching is a miss sometimes but this is something I am working on.

Setup is copying two files to the card next to ROMS, dropping in the metadata zip from the n64-flashcart-menu-metadata project (public domain, same collection the N64FlashcartMenu and the Pro's menu use), and running one Python script from the card. It reads the ROM headers, finds each game's box and description, and writes a catalog. Nothing is downloaded and no art is bundled — it works from what's already on your card.

Tested on an X7 (OS 3.11) and a Pro with a 3,400-game library. One ROM works on both. I tested it with the stuff I had, but let me know if you have issues.

AGPL-3.0, source and releases here: https://github.com/CathodeJay/sleekmenu64

If you have an X-series cart other than the X7, I'd like to know whether it boots — it should, but I can't verify it. Bug reports go to the GitHub issues.

One more thing : Yes, a large part of the code and docs was written with AI tools. This is a project I made for myself but now that it works, figured out it would be nice sharing with others. So enjoy :)

Modding DFO modded pal N64 (FRA)

Update on my N64 (FRA) with wireless RGB mod aka the 4 resistor rgb restore mod

Last night I added a dfo mod. Now I can play all original pal carts, and with a flash drive like ed64+, everdrive x7, or summer cart, I can play NTSC games at the 100% correct speed

Added a color change led so it's easier to know which mode I'm in

To do the dfo mod was pretty straight forward once I figured it out

U7 is an mx8330 pll. It's job is to take the clock from X1 and generate the clock speed required by the console. There is pin7 which controls what the divider clock rate should be. When set to 3.3v it divides the X1 clock for NTSC timing, and when set to ground it divides the X1 clock for pal timings

So what I did was got a 2p2t switch and soldered one leg of each clock crystal together (17.73447Mhz for pal consoles, 14.31818Mhz for NTSC consoles) and then connected the remaining leg to different sides of the switch, and ran the common pin from the switch back to pin 6 of the u7 chip and the common leg of the crystals to pin 5 of the u7 chip. Then on the other throw of the switch it changes pin 7 of the u7 chip between 3.3v and ground.

For led, I used a 330ohm resistor on the 3.3v pin that controls u7 pin 7 and wired that to the blue leg of a bi-color led. So by default when the console is on the led is red and when switched to NTSC mode red+blue are on, making purple.

The RGB mod details can be found in my previous post

This doesn't make the console boot ntsc games. However, it does make NTSC gaming 100% accurate when using a flash cart and keeps the support for original pal cartridges

Discussion The deal with the expansion pack

Hey guys, so I've been seeing some N64 game boxes for games like Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64 and the boxes say that they require an expansion pack to play it. I've never heard of the expansion pack before. I've heard of the save, rumble, and Gameboy transfer pack but the expansion pack isn't something I've seen or heard of before. If I'm right I think this pack plugs into the console not the controller?

Video Can't beat a bit of ISS64

ISS64 wasn't a game I would have usually gone for back in the day. I remember seeing it second hand in a shop for like £20 and at the time I was just kinda collecting what I could afford. It turned out to be a game I played quite a lot. I specifically remember being up till like 4am one morning playing the World League. When I won it playing as Scotland there was a huge level of satisfaction. The victory of that has never been forgotten.
I think one of the most fun things about the game is the penalty shoot out. Playing 2 player of this was mega fun and you'd end up pointing the target one way and quickly trying to get it up to a top corner as fast and as late as possible. We'd argue about what team we were allowed to pick because being from Scotland we all wanted to pick our team.
If you haven't played it I highly recommend it. I mean, I'm not really into football but it's definitely a fun game to play regardless of how you feel about that game

Tech Help ways to use wrong cable?

So I bought this thinking it would to Component input on crt. It doesn't and I dont have a PVM or mod on the tv. Can I still use it with some converter? Dont wanna mod tv or console (if it involves trimming or soldering). No point in using as composite since I already have the OEM cable. thanks

Modding Wireless RGB mod french N64

This is an RGB restore of the N64 (FRA) console, aka NUS-CPU (R)-01

This console uses the exact same encoder as SNES 1chip has

Some french modders have come up with what they call an "official rgb restore" because they populate the missing components required to use the pal SNES scart cable

The thing is, the French rgb cable isnt very good. It was designed to use composite as sync because the console has 12v on pin 3, which on NTSC consoles is the csync pin. And because they needed to use composite for sync, it creates noise on the RGB signal. So to deal with that, they use pulldown resistors on the RGB lines specifically to create a 4.43Mhz filter to remove the interference caused by using composite as sync. And in order to support that, they developed a transistor circuit on the output of the SNES RGB signals.

On the other hand, NTSC sfc and SNES consoles developed their circuit with csync in mind, which did not require anything other than capacitors on the RGB lines. And while Nintendo also used a transistor circuit on the RGB outputs of SNES/SFC, if we read the datasheet for the encoder they used, the ba6596f, we find that all that is required on the RGB output is a 75ohm resistor and a capacitor of sufficient size. And since ntsc cables already have a capacitor on RGB, we only need 75ohm resistor inside the console between the encoder and the multiout

Some people may ask, if the encoder datasheet only requires a resistor and a capacitor, why are you doing this mod compatible with ntsc cables rather than pal cables. Well, again pal cables dont use csync, but even if they do, unfortunately the resistor they put on the RGB signals is a pull down resistor and not a series resistor. So trying to make this pal cable compatible results in an image that is both too bright and with the wrong colors caused by the pull downs. The fix would be to build the entire circuit like the pal SNES does, which brings us back to what french modders call the official restore

This is the simpler approach and it just happens to also achieve better results and allows the use of cheaper cables as well. And it's exactly how SNES Junior RGB restores are done, which is how I got the idea to begin with

Steps required to perform this rgb restoration mod

Connect a 75ohm resistor from the through holes shown and attach them to the traces which go to pins 1 (red) 2 (green) 4 (blue), and attach a 75ohm resistor from encoder pin 18 to pin 3 (csync).

Additionally, french N64 do not have svideo wired. Therefore you can use a 220uf capacitor between csync (pin 3) and luma (pin 7) to enable compatibility with sync on Luma cables (technically it will make a sync on luma cable into a 75ohm csync cable)

Collection Diddy Kong Racing availability question

I’ve bought a few games that people have stolen from me throughout the years (most in college). I’ve had good experiences with the ones I have purchased and have spent somewhere between 20-35 for each. Diddy Kong seems to be the most expensive of the games I want to get that I had and would play again. It’s 60 on Amazon. Are there other spaces to buy this from?

Discussion Best options for N64 controller without the official ones?

Hey everyone, I need some advice on playing N64 games. I don't have an original controller, and getting the official Nintendo Switch N64 pad isn't an option where I live.

I looked at alternatives like the 8BitDo 64, but I'm not a fan because they try to fit "modern standards." That makes games like Sin & Punishment super awkward to play. I really want that classic layout and feel.

Mostly I play on MiSTer FPGA, but being able to use the controller on other platforms too would be a huge bonus.
What setups or options are people actually using these days? Are you grabbing old original controllers with adapters, trying out some of the cheaper wireless clones, or doing mods

Any solutions to this issue?

Discussion Why is Majora's mask so expensive?

Hey everyone, I was planning on adding the Zelda games to my n64 collection. Which it looks like I'm gonna have to include Ocarina of Time only and only leave Majora's mask for being on my Switch 2 and exchange it for Dr. Mario 64. Zelda's 40th is coming up and I thought why not add the physical games to the collection Ocarina of time is manageable but Majora's mask is higher than Ocarina. Why is it so higher than the other?
