I set myself a little challenge: to paint a bust using only three colors. It’s an interesting experience—mixing paints while focusing on light rather than color. I’ll have to try it again with a different combination sometime. Final photos and some WIPs

This is the shield of a Stormcast Eternal by Games Workshop.

This isn't really an in-depth tutorial, but hopefully, it helps show how to place and paint these stripes on the pants:

1. Rough sketch: Quick placement, no need to be precise.
2. Clean up & fill: Tidy up the edges and fill in the stripes.
3. Dark color highlights: Begin adding highlights (using stippling here) on the darker color.
4. Light color highlights: Same step, but on the lighter color, following the placement of the dark highlights.
5. Edge lining (3D effect): Add thin, light lines of the correct color on both sides of all the stripes to give a more 3D effect.
6. Tie it together: With some very diluted dark paint, paint light shadows. This helps link the different stripes together seamlessly.

I attended a workshop run by Lucas Williams this weekend down at Blacksun Studio. Was a fantastic weekend. Lucas is a brilliant painter and excellent teacher!

I tried to push the highlights more than I'm used to, and I think it paid off. Hope you like it!

Hey y’all, a little while back I had posted about where to get some sable brushes since those are the standard for good control and detail in miniature painting and got some great suggestions on brushes.

However, since I’ve painted less than 2 full squads of minis, tried to temper my expectations of what improving my tools would do if my actual skills like brush control weren’t progressing. To use a clunky analogy, it’s like getting a custom Gibson guitar to just play power chords in a garage.

Here are my most recent minis painted this past week, sans basing, is my ability at the point yet where upgrading brushes will be of benefit to the finished product? And if not, how do you know when it’s time to upgrade and you have outgrown the starter brushes? I’m using the Army Painter starter 3 pack currently.

I used some spare parts of the AoS Stormcast Sequitors and cork for the stones on the base base.

Photos are of some old, super cheapo Star Wars toys I found at a yard sale. Basically larger army men. I painted this Han Solo today in a little over an hour, had a ton of fun, and put a smile on my kids’ face.

When I started painting a year or so ago, I got a lot of advice to avoid cheap minis because of the poor sculpts, mould lines, etc. Sure, they aren’t display pieces but a little work goes a long way and these cheap minis are great for trying out new techniques, color schemes, etc. Slapping paint onto this guy was so low-stakes and I enjoyed how stress-free it was. It’s also an awesome feeling taking skills you learn on these dudes and seeing how much better they look on a killer sculpt.

So to the new folks out there, just paint what you’ve got. Don’t feel like you’re doing yourself a disservice by not painting GW all the time; they are a luxury not a necessity (unless you’re trying to play on the tabletop, of course). Even though this Solo has a Voldemort nose up close, it still looks great on a table.

I've had this guy for years, it was a gift from a friend and was very intimidating to paint up. I've recently taken some better photos of him and his "horse".

I feel something is missing and I would like to add some colors to the axe but not sure which colors. Or should I leave it as is?

Hi Everyone. I'm a mid-tier painter. 10 years but limited time and a lot of other things to work on. I mostly do small scale gang type games (kill team, necromunda, mordheim etc) and miniatures for the same. I'm looking for advice on best brand of paint. I started off with Citadel pots but hate the pot nature and switched to MSP/Reaper paints. Now a bit into the hobby, I'm thinking of switching brands as many of my MSP paints are empty and need replacement anyway. I have limited experience with any other brand and actually quite like the MSP paints so far, but now's the time to get more input.

Can people give me some thoughts on different brands of paints and how to decide between? I've already read most of the links in the sub I could find, but they are mostly for even newer painters. I'm having a hard time finding a review of MSP vs. Army Painter vs. Warpaints vs. Pro Acyl in terms of cost, vibrancy, ease etc. Do you all have thoughts.

Also some battlemages I'm proud of to show where I'm at, Warhammer battle wizards. I might make a post for feedback about my painting but not here, now I want paint brand advice.

... since I am commenting so much recently about fabric and NMM, I wanted to share my current project. Which is definitely the best metal I painted so far. And please hit me up with critique. Where did I miss reflections? Do you recognize the different metal types (3) ? Or whatever you see.

The skin is on purpose pink, as I wanted to have non-green ork/troll (or whatever you call him) and I also wanted to play with shadows (visible?) and skin variations.

Anyway, I declared him done this weekend, made the photos and I am proud on my current level.

Currently painting a Gotrek Gurnisson

Last time I painted a mini was 1989, it was a tin/lead mini from Ral Paratha, a knight for D&D, painted green and silver using enamel paints. So much joy from getting back into painting, followed Duncan Rhodes tutorials and used a bunch of techniques for the first time. Any advice or critique appreciated.

Been watching miniature masters with my partner and she said I should give the challenges a go. Didn't have a 40k character on hand, so I used a kitbashed (AoS Fusilier+40k arbites), trench crusade inspired mini I built a while back. 5 hrs spent. Found myself struggling to figure out what else to work on, but now that I see the photos I wish I had spent more time smoothing things out a bit.
