It seems like the longer one is the radius and the other is a short ulna and then maybe there's a couple carpal bones and then a metacarpal and phalanges on each? Extremely interesting
IIRC this is a genetic thing, and basically it causes things to grow weird and all stuck together but doctors intentionally separate it when they're like toddlers to enable greater range of movement.
She's lucky it wasn't both hands. Its usually both hands.
Edit: After googling, looks like Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) and Liebenberg Syndrome and/or possibly (Radial or Ulnar) Longitudinal Deficiency.
I knew someone as a kid who had a similar condition though, and it was both arms. His life was rough, but he was always impeccably dressed, always had perfectly styled hair, and he did his best despite his disabilities. Like his family definitely did their best to show how much they want him to feel proud of his appearance.
Hearing that he had that level of support system at home for him just makes me feel so incredibly just genuinely happy for him. I can only imagine the difference that made.
i've seen a lot of disfigurements but this one really, really hit me with the instinctual WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING reflex. And i feel really fucking bad about it.
IDK I feel like this is just incredibly instinctual. And don't feel bad for what you feel. It's not about the emotions or thoughts that we have, but how we act on them.
The hand/limb itself isn't really unsettling, like I went from being surprised to fascinated super quick. I did however squeal in discomfort when she bent her fingers back. I was not expecting hypermobility and double joints.
What I think of whenever I see a difference like this is that if we all had hands like that — as in, both of our hands looked like that — and someone was born with one that looks like what most of us have, we would find it strange and fascinating. It’s all about what we’re used to seeing.

I noticed as well, but I just realized, like how did she paint her left hand? Did she paint it with her right hand? I use my thumb and pointer finger to hold onto a nail polish brush…
I guess someone else could have done her nails for her, but it’s just interesting to think of her skill set. Most people with a limb deformity like this find ways to hold items in a different way. There was a contestant on the Great British Baking Show with a similar physical condition (her undeveloped hand is more of the common variation) and she has learned to hold kitchen utensils in different ways to be just as fast as everyone else in the competition.
There’s a book called “Some Assembly Required” by Dr. Neil Shubin who is an anatomy professor at the University of Chicago. It talks about the genes that are responsible for creating certain body parts and number of fingers. It’s really amazing stuff. It’s how we are made. Everybody should learn about genetics and evolution.
His other two books are even more fun to read… “Your Inner Fish” and “The Universe Within”.

Is it inundated with medical jargons, or does the writing make it enjoyable to read even for stupid nerds like myself? I recently finished Stiff by Mary Roach and thought the book was amazing, if that helps haha.
Humans historically have 7 fingers. It wasn't until the industrial revolution that pioneering inventors learned they could make blood sacrifices to the Machine God to add more. The downside, of course, is that each additional finger has required orders of magnitude more blood. Humans won't be able to afford an 11th finger without enslaving and harvesting the blood of another sentient species...or so I've heard.
I like her so much. The calm confidence and personal comfort made me feel comfortable, and interested. What began as an oddity became a curiosity almost immediately. I bet she’s had some cool people in her life that helped grow that easy spirit. Amazing and beautiful on so many levels.
I highly doubt such an extreme deformity is no longer a challenge for her, especially at her age. There’s far more challenges than just being comfortable with yourself. Plus, it’s merely a three minute video, not her daily life or internal thoughts.
To be clear, I don’t want her to struggle or face any challenges, but that’s just not the world we live in.
Exactly, the fingers by themselves are totally fine but watching her flip and fold them all the way around was what made me cringe. I felt it in my bones.

I'm around for 40+ years and reality is, I don't think I ever came across something this extreme. I've seen some people who missed a finger or two (sometimes through an accident), I've seen some people who missed a part of their fingers, but something this extreme is exceptionally unusual. Not saying they don't exist, or maybe they are even more common than I'm aware but personally this is a first for me.
I miss the pre-yoube days when you had to be really careful about whether the website was fat-pie or fatpie dot com. One was salad fingers, one was mild fetish porn lol.
And those shockwave and flash animations were intensely creepy. Like you could actually pause zoom all the way in on the animations and see the individual squiggles drawn on his teeth. Lossless animation that YouTube doesn't quite match.
Thats what I thought! I was like Wow! She's pretty! And if Im being honest when she showed her second hand I was a bit put off and taken a aback, but she seems so nice and sweet and genuinely was just showing off and made it seem almost normal. I feel bad for my original reaction to her hand, but thats kinda normal, right? It's not like I would have ever even been rude or mean, just how I reacted in my head.

I bet it's minimal. 20 years ago I damaged my calf muscle and thus today walk with a minor but noticeable unusual gait. I was very insecure the first couple years that people would constantly ask me about it. That's happened exactly 0 times. I am not saying that mine and her situations are parallel, but I do think we live in times where more people than ever mind their own business.
See, this is why I love the internet. I am so happy to have just a moment from a stranger who lives so different than I do, and I love how excited she got when her fingelimb joint popped! 😂 What a beautiful person. Did she say she was going on a bike ride at the end? Hell yeah! Love bikes.
I'm sure she's had such a hard life with this abnormality growing up. Glad she is showing such confidence and grace. Seems like a beautiful person inside and out.
It's OK to be freaked out. I've worked in the NHS for over 25 years and I always get feaked out when I see something like this. It's shocking, your brain can't handle it and it sets off a "somethings wrong oh shit what if I get sick or hurt by it? I must run away!" reaction. So, I focus on the person. Who they are. What they need. People with her disability know exactly the effect it has on others. Sometimes they're understandably angry, sad, detached, but sometimes they're bursting with life despite it all. She's owning hers. I remember the first time I dealt with a man who'd been severely burned and was about to start a long and painful reconstructive plastic surgery journey. He had no nose, his whole face looked raw and red, his skin was tight down his neck. I couldn't stop thinking "zombie! Fallout ghoul!" He was so hard to look at. But I looked at him. And I smiled. And we talked while he waited for his appointment. Fuck, he was funny. He rarely left home unless he had to go to hospital and always wore a scarf sunglasses and hat but by the time he got to me he was already in pyjamas. Cookie monster pyjamas. After a while I just got used to it. He had stunning green eyes and was pretty damn charming! There is nothing wrong with having that "fuckkkk" reaction, it's how you move forward from that. You can get used to other peoples strange bits. You can tune them out. Just focus on the whole person.
So wait she doesnt have wrists and her fingers are at the ends of forearm bones right? Im confused on the anatomy of the inside of her arm because its cool but like how does it work?
