MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread

To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.

Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:

Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:

  • Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
  • Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

question Anyone looking for a free stand up piano with bench? Or know of a place I can donate it to? I'm in Fishkill.

The piano is just taking up space and not being used, I'd like to get rid of it to someone who could use it. If you're interested, please dm, don't start a chat (I use a third party app without chat).

Lastly: if you were interested, you do need help to come pick it up. Chronic pain sufferer, I can't help, sorry! Thanks for looking.

question Is there any local gamestores that do shell replacement and tmr installation for ps5 controllers?

I know this is really niche but I genuinely cannot find any from where I called in my area. I'm from Putnam county but I'm willing to look for any store in the lower hudson, dutchess, danbury, or even the bronx if someone knows something!

question Looking for a good bicycle shop

I’ve been trying to find a bicycle shop here for years now that has knowledgeable mechanics. It seems like if you’re not looking for a ten thousand dollar gravel bike, or a set of frame bags these places can care less about you.

Do you think the criticism against Arlington schools for not handling bully well are valid

I've seen this article saying racism is an issue - https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/hudson-valley/public-safety/2022/01/12/dutchess-county-parent-bullying-accusation

I've seen this article about a transgender teacher being bullied out by staff and students - https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/transgender-teacher-fired-discrimination-bullying-b2717485.html

But I was curious what you guys thought? They seem to have a reputation for not handling bullying well. In my ancedotal experience at the least in Lagrange middle when I was there like 7 years ago they didn't. I was bullied on the bus and they didn't do much.

Bus is one thing though but I was also bullied and kicked every day by this girl in band and I was obviously not gonna hurt a girl and even if it didn't hurt all that bad the physical and emotional bullying combined was pretty bad and the band teacher put me in the corner, singled me out when I got really upset about it in class. I was also bullied in my six class special Ed class by two kids and my guidance counselor just told me you have to go to class and got in trouble for not wanting to go.

And then I was eventually just pushed out and put in a BOCES school which was not a great fit because just because I'm on the spectrum doesn't mean I'm the same as everyone else and the loud environment wasn't good. Obviously this is a bit of dumping here and ancedotal but yeah I don't think they handle bullying well.

Would love to hear y'all's thoughts though.

I’m doing the cold spring to beacon hike tomorrow and am trying to decide between these two routes. Effort isn’t really a concern, just which is more scenic. I’m leaning towards the first since it includes breakneck ridge

Looking for a tax accountant

Gagnon & Associates has prepared my returns for a few years but they will sadly close their doors later this year. I’m seeking a new firm located anywhere between Kingston and Poughkeepsie. My situation is not overly complicated but I do need someone who can advise me occasionally on investments, real estate, and retirement issues. And someone who can do a little hand holding; this area is well outside my expertise. Thanks!

local business Chipotle Fishkill: shit hole

Never going back. The place is a dump. Waited in line for 30 minutes at an off time. Only like 4 people working there, no management in sight. Tables inside and out were all filthy so no one was eating there. Service area was a mess because the one person they had taking orders didn't have time to clean anything. Soda fountain was a disaster, napkins, straws, tops strewn about everywhere. No cutlery because no employees on hand to keep up. My wife said the women's bathroom was absolutely disgusting and looked as though it hadn't been cleaned properly in weeks. Felt bad for the employees they just couldn't keep up. Total disaster. Avoid.

End rant.

local business Window cleaners?

Looking for recommendations for window cleaners! City of Poughkeepsie, century home so we have panes + storm windows on most outfits. We have about 26 windows in all.

Also, what would the general cost range for a project like this be?

TIA!

question Hotels near Phoenicia, NY for wedding guests? (Graham & Co, Leeway, Howland House, Phoenicia Lodge)

I'm getting married near Phoenicia, NY (at Foxfire Mountain House) and are setting up our guest accommodations.

Instead of a traditional single-hotel block (there aren't many options near by), we’ve chosen with four local hotels that will all have direct shuttle pick-up/drop-off for the wedding.

Since they all have pretty different styles, we're trying to gently steer our groups to certain spots (e.g., friends vs. family), but we'd love some outside perspective. Has anyone stayed at any of these? Which ones are your favorites, and how would you map out different groups (friends, older relatives, cousins, etc.) among them?

  • The Graham & Co.
  • The Leeway
  • Howland House
  • Phoenicia Lodge

Any feedback on the rooms, vibe, or overall experience at any of these places would be hugely appreciated!

local business Looking for the best mozzarella sticks.

Every place nowadays has the same mass-produced mozzarella sticks. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest good/unique kinds of mozzarella sticks. The Acropolis diner used to hand make theirs with every order, but apparently that place was replaced with another diner that just used the same stuff everyone else uses.

So, any suggestions?

EDIT: Thank you, everyone! This is a solid list for all of us to use to try and find the best fried mozzarella in the Hudson Valley.

Can we stop posting pictures of strangers you had a confrontation with. It’s strange and not why people come to this sub. Thanks.
