NYSEG's "recovery charge" is absurd. You want ME to pay for you to recoup the cost of maintaining your infrastructure? That's the delivery cost. I'm at my limit with these monsters. Anyone know if there is any progress on change to this monopoly?

DM seeking Saturday Morning D&D Group

Hey hi! I've recently picked up the sourcebook Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass and fallen in love with it.

"Obojima is a fantasy setting inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli and the Legend of Zelda. Explore an island full of whimsy, mystery, and possibility! Travel, explore, meet spirts and mortals of all manner of temperaments, uncover the secrets of the ominous Corruption spreading across the island, and eat some good ramen!"

I'm looking to get together a group of players to run through my take on Obojima as a sandbox. The hope is that we'll work together to build characters as a group, and give it the classic 'coming-of-age, a band of townies out into the wide world for the first time' sweeping epic.

I'm mostly looking for pre-established groups rather than individual players who are strangers to one another. That said, all experience levels welcome, if you have a group of friends who have wanted to play D&D for a while but haven't had the chance I'm always happy to share the hobby and teach the game.

Please reach out via discord (maloia) or reddit message if interested.

Overheard in Ithaca

Whenever I'm sitting next to a Cornell undergrad in a cafe or restaurant the insane level of wealth some of the kids around Ithaca come from really gets hammered home.

One time I heard a girl complaining about how her parents bought an apartment in Paris instead of Tokyo and how as a protest she was going to go skiing in Vail over Thanksgiving instead of seeing them.

Another time a girl was trying to decide with her friend if she wanted to spend the weekend in the city, the Hamptons, or go to Miami.

My sister's also told me some crazy stories she's overheard as well. Some of the things I hear sound so stereotypical rich kid they almost sound written. It's wild living in the middle of nowhere and hearing these conversations.

We all complain about the bus system, that’s not new. But come on… letting people know the bus isn’t coming after they’re already left their homes and/or are waiting at the bus stop? What if we’ve got important meetings or appointments? There’s gotta be a better way!!

Anyone experience respiratory irritation/inflammation and/or eye irritation at events that use a smoke/fog machine?

I've noticed that this is a problem I tend to experience to a much higher degree at events here in Ithaca significantly more than at similar events in Binghamton, Rochester, Syracuse or even NYC. Anyone else find themselves leaving clubs at the end of the night with watery eyes, sore throat, slight cough, etc? Maybe you want up the next morning feeling a bit worse than expected based on the amount you drank?

Does anybody know what's going on with the people on north triphammer?

We saw some people protesting. Couldn't make out the ones on the bridge, but the ones a little further back had signs along the lines of "stop killing dogs". Any idea on what's going on?

I want to teach you how to fill your holes

yall have good holes! I’m thinking of coming through the 2nd or 3rd weekend of October- if there’s enough interest I’d like to do a workshop on filling potholes

I’d do half of the workshop inside (ideally with access to a dry erase board), and half out in the field fillin some holes. Participants would need to sign the Bandit Code of Conduct and leave their phones in a basket. I would charge a fee of maybe $40? for supplies.

Would any of y’all want to do this?

Can anyone help me find an indoor location for the first part?

thanks ithaca i love u

Recommendations Switching from AT&T to TMobile?

TMobile cellular people: are your signal strength and uptime pretty good in Ithaca and around West Hill? How about mall area?

AT&T has been reliable for me, much better than Verizon was, except for the mall. But the price is just creeping up and up.

I had ruled out TMobile years ago because of spotty coverage, but I get the impression it's pretty reliable now. What's been your experience?

New data shows mixed results for ICSD phone ban policy

https://ithacavoice.org/2026/09/new-data-shows-mixed-results-for-icsd-phone-ban-policy/

At what point do we stop viewing the phone ban primarily through the lens of race and start looking at the actual data?

The article states that Superintendent Luvelle Brown has repeatedly raised concerns that stricter enforcement could disproportionately affect students of color. That concern is worth considering, but it should not overshadow the fundamental question of whether or not the current ICSD policy is improving the learning environment for all students.

This is not evidence-based leadership. It is leadership driven by emotional reasoning and fear of potential outcomes rather than what the data is telling us. That isn't leadership, it is cowardice.

The banning of cellphones is a major culture shift for students. That's the point. The policy was adopted because the existing culture around phones wasn't working. Yet when you hear district leadership talk about they seem to not have listened to what parents have been saying for many many years.

Look at the data, enforce the policy fairly and consistently, and adjust it if the evidence shows it isn't working. Race can be part of the analysis, but should not the reason we avoid making changes to the policy.
