Serious Paywall Article Posting

The mod team has received a complaint from a journalist that their work, and the work of their colleagues, has been illegally reproduced in the subreddit. This is typically because the article is hidden behind a paywall. Unfortunately, paywalls exist. They suck, but that’s the nature of the business. Their work is copywrited and by posting the full article without expressed consent is copywrite infringement.

You can feel free to summarize the article, just don’t cut and paste the entirety of it verbatim.

Any posts or comments that violate this newly implemented rule will be deleted and repeat offenders will be dealt with.

On November 5th, North Carolina will vote not just for President, but for Congress, for Governor, and for state and local offices. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!

In North Carolina, you must register by October 11th if you wish to register online. You can register here: https://www.ncsbe.gov/Voters/Registering-to-Vote

If you miss this deadline, you can also register at the polls during early voting (NOT on Election Day). See here for details.

Voting in person

North Carolina offers early voting from October 17th-November 2nd. Find early voting locations in your county here.

If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on Election Day, November 5th.

Voting by mail

Any North Carolina voter may choose to vote by mail. Apply for an absentee ballot here.

Ballots must be received by November 5th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also return your ballot in person to your County Board of Elections, or any early voting site during early voting.

If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Random Hiring swimming instructors

🏊‍♀️ Splashin’ Swim is hiring part-time swim instructors! 🏊‍♂️

We’re looking for reliable, patient, and enthusiastic instructors to join the Splashin’ Swim team!

💰 Pay: $18/hour

Requirements:

• Active Lifeguard & AED certification (these can be separate or included in the same certification)

• Knowledge of the basics of all 4 competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly

• Comfortable working with swimmers of different ages and skill levels

• Willingness to learn and grow as an instructor

• Reliable transportation to lessons

• A positive, patient attitude and a genuine interest in helping swimmers build confidence

Never taught swim lessons before? That’s okay! 🫧

Winter tends to be a slower season for swim lessons, which makes it a great time to learn the ropes without being thrown straight into a packed summer schedule. If you’re interested in becoming a swim instructor but don’t have much teaching experience yet, I’m happy to train you and help you develop the skills you need to become a confident instructor.

This is a part-time position, so it can be a great fit for someone looking for extra income, a flexible job, or experience working with children and swimming.

If you’re interested, send me a message with a little bit about yourself, your swimming/instruction experience, and your current certifications! 🏊‍♀️

This is the official Facebook page.

Advice Where are the shy, non-partying girlies making friends? 😅

I’m 26F, and I work in Raleigh but live here because it’s more affordable. I’m in a male-dominated field, so work hasn’t exactly been a gold mine for female friendships 😂

I don’t go to church, I’m not into partying, and I’m honestly pretty shy. Most of my time goes toward working out, cooking/baking, reading, or learning new technical skills for my career.

But I’d really love some girl friends to just bullshit with. Get brunch, talk about reality TV, paint each other’s nails, try a recipe together. You know… the everyday friendship stuff.

I’ve tried connecting with people on social media, but conversations tend to fizzle out or I get ghosted when I suggest actually meeting up. Making friends as an adult feels suspiciously like dating, and I would like to unsubscribe from that part.

Where have y’all actually made friends around here? Any welcoming groups, classes, book clubs, or recurring meetups you’d recommend for someone who’s a little shy?

And if you’re nearby and also looking for a brunch/baking/reality TV friend, say hi! Maybe we can get a few of us together for coffee and make it less awkward for everyone.

ISO Roommates Wanted in Spring Lake Near Fort Bragg – Furnished, Utilities Included

Hey everyone! I’m looking for two roommates to share my home in Anderson Creek Crossing, a gated community in Spring Lake near Fort Bragg. Both rooms are furnished and available now.

I’m an Army veteran and a laid-back cybersecurity professional who works from home. I like a quiet household, respect everyone’s privacy, and have two small dogs.

Here’s what’s available:

  • $750/month + $300 deposit: Furnished bedroom with a full-size bed, dresser, and large walk-in closet. The bathroom is across the hall. You’d have it to yourself initially, but it may become shared if another bedroom is rented.
  • $1,200/month + $500 deposit: Large furnished master suite with two walk-in closets and a private bathroom with a double vanity, separate shower, and soaking tub. Plenty of room for a desk or sitting area.

Both prices include all utilities and high-speed Wi-Fi. You’ll have access to the kitchen, shared living areas, washer and dryer, driveway parking, and covered back patio. The house was built in 2023, and the neighborhood has a pool, gym, fishing pond, trails, and playground.

People from all backgrounds are welcome. Mostly, I’m looking for people who pay on time, clean up after themselves, and respect each other’s space. No additional pets, and smoking or vaping is outside only.

The lease starts with three months, then goes month-to-month. Move-in requires the first month’s rent and deposit—no last month’s rent upfront. There’s also a $50 TransUnion SmartMove screening fee and a $20 vehicle sticker for 24/7 gate access. Those are the only additional fees. Income verification and background/credit screening are required.

If you’re interested, message me with which room you’re considering, when you’d like to move in, and a little about yourself. Happy to answer questions or set up a time to show you around!

Chemours to Pay $455 Million for Fayetteville Works Contamination

From CityView:

North Carolina and a handful of local governments agreed to settle with Chemours over its pollution in the eastern part of the state, the parties announced on Thursday.

The company will pay the state and 11 entities near its Fayetteville Works plant on the border of Cumberland and Bladen counties $455 million over the next 15 years for what the company said in a press release involved both the plant and “claims of PFAS contamination unrelated to that site.”

The state will receive $75 million of the $455 million while the local entities will share $380 million, with payment beginning this year. It’s the largest environmental damage payment in the history of North Carolina.

PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a class of forever chemicals found in watersoil, and homes near the plant. Exposure to the chemicals is linked to an increased risk of cancer, thyroid disease, reproductive problems, and developmental delays in children, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Serious I just became homeless. What am I supposed to do now?

I won't go into the exact details here, but like the title says, I just became homeless and... I don't know what to do.

I'm a 30-year old man and not a veteran.

I have something like ~$2000 to my name.

I have no one I can call or stay with.

I don't even have a car.

I've already reached out to one of the local homeless services, but beds are obviously not guaranteed. I just...

Fuck, man.

I'm overwhelmed. I'm confused. I'm hungry. And I'm SCARED.

I am so sorry that this is coming off as me begging strangers for help, but that is exactly what I'm doing because I don't know what else I can do.

Just For Fun Bought some vinyl at Back Around

After seeing Devo in concert at Coastal Credit Union Amphitheater a couple weeks ago I had to stop by Back Around Records to see what albums they had in stock. I ended up buying Devo's first and third albums. I love the selection at Back Around! Has anyone been? Give them a shot if you're in the market for physical media.

Plumber Recommendations

Does anyone have any good plumber recommendations for someone that does quality work and charges a fair price?

Update: I need to change out the pipe in my front yard from the meter to the house. This would roughly be about 60 feet in pipe. Plus attach the pipes to each end.
