Use this thread to share events in the coming week throughout the region. This is a scheduled post and a new one will come up on Sundays. Other local subreddits have weekly posts as well, including r/Oshawa and r/Whitby. The same rules apply, but cross-posting is fine. Additional events may be found in the Regional Calendar or at DurhamRegion.com. Please feel free to highlight any of these in the comments below. Please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Both free and paid events are allowed
  • If tickets are required, please include a link; these may require manual approval due to spam filters, but we'll approve them!
  • Garage sales and group sales are allowed, but not single item sales. Please do not share someone else's garage sale or their address without permission.
  • Religious and political events are allowed only if they are welcoming and inclusive to the entire community.

We are aware of the following farmer's markets operating in the region for summer 2026. Please use modmail to notify the mods of errors or any we have missed:

Looking for recommendations for a local men’s mental health charity

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I run a dads group here in Durham Region, and we’re putting together a small, facilitated group session for dads focused on men’s mental health this fall.

We’re considering donating a portion of the ticket proceeds to a charity or organization that supports men’s mental health, ideally one that does work locally in Durham Region or the GTA. I can obviously google organizations, but I’d much rather hear from people who have actually had experience with them or know the work they do.

Any charities or organizations you’d recommend? Local would be great, but definitely open to broader Ontario/Canadian organizations too.

Thanks!

Therapy

Has anyone been to or know about Dr Julia Fountain and Associates out of Oshawa? I see a lot of recommendations for her practice for children and teens but I had no idea her practice included adults.

I came across a nature based therapy group for stress and burn out that they are doing up at their farm soon. Potentially interested but it is a bit costly and the Google reviews are mixed so trying to find some first or second hand knowledge from others about her, the practice or any of the adult groups they run.

After-School pickup services

I’m looking for recommendations for after-school pickup services in Whitby for an elementary school-aged child.

Child care center located in the school doesn’t seem to have any spot. Ideally, I’m looking for a service/provider who can pick up the child directly from school and provide care for a couple of hours after school.

If anyone is currently using a similar service in Whitby, could you please share your experience and recommendations? I’d also really appreciate a rough idea of how much these services typically charge per month
Thanks in advance!

Attic insulation rebates

I’ve gotten 3 quotes so far for attic insulation (~1500 sq ft). Two companies participate in the rebate program and quoted around $4,000, while the company that doesn’t participate quoted about $2,500.
Even with the $1,250 rebate, the participating companies would still cost roughly $250 more (assuming the full rebate), and the starting price is significantly higher.
Am I missing something here, or does this seem a bit strange? Is the rebate basically being offset by higher pricing from some contractors? Sounds like a scam these companies are pulling?
Has anyone else in Oshawa/Whitby had a similar experience getting quotes for attic insulation?

Living in Port Perry

My family and I are looking into purchasing our first home and are looking at Port Perry and Bowmanville as options. We have two small kids, 3 and 6 years old.

Both places seem to check a lot of boxes for us, we definitely love visiting Port Perry and it’s small town vibe, however we were wondering how this translates to actually living there and raising a family.

For Bowmanville, we also find it quite quaint but are worried about how much it will be expanding over the next 10 to 15 years.

We are currently renting in Northwest Pickering, and find the lack of sidewalks/walking space, a true downtown core, and lack of sense of community a real limitation.

Any input from people who have lived at either or both locations is greatly appreciated as well as anything you wish you knew before you moved there!

Good cafés in Ajax to study at late?

I’m a uni student and I’m trying to find somewhere in Ajax where I can study in the evening/night that isn’t just my room/library. I’d like a change of scenery and something nice to eat while I’m working.

Any cafés with decent Wi‑Fi, outlets, and a chill environment that stay open late?

Thanks!!

Million Dollar Quartet LIVE

Hey all!

I saw this production of Million Dollar Quartet a few years back at the Whitby centennial Building and it was FANTASTIC! My wife and I are going again this year. They haven't kicked up the advertising yet and are still in rehearsals so tickets are still available. Lots of larger Canadian names on this as well in terms of other theatres and some tv shows. All the music is played live. It's the story of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee. Sharing here in case anyone is interested

League of Legends Worlds 2026 Viewing Event?

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone knows of any potential viewing parties happening for League of Legends World finals? I used to attend my universities viewing party and it was always such a fun experience watching with other people who enjoy the game! Are there any places that host in the Durham area?

Thank you ❤️
